Friday Night Booze Thread. Smithworks Vodka Open

Filed under Food and Drink, Open thread at December 15th, 2017 - 4:15 pm

As yinz are aware, Mrs Coldwarrior and I are total and complete vodka snobs. In our cabinet is Tito’s Handmade, Reyka, Jewel of Russia (Ultra), and Russian Standard. Luksusowa is the house vodka and does an admirable job as well.

When we test a new vodka it is done at room temperature, two shot glasses each, swish in the mouth, taste everything slowly. We have eliminated several so called ‘high end’ vodkas by this method for awful and sometimes weird flavors. Room temperature gives you the palletand nose and quickly reveals the undesirable tastes that are masked by drinking it at freezer temperature. Room temperature is the great equalizer and truest test. The infamous Coldwarrior and Mrs Coldwarrior taste challenge is to take two shot glasses at room temperature and truly taste the vodka, roll it around. Room temperature reveals all of the pallet (there should be just about none) and unmasks what is masked by drinking the vodka frozen. It’s brutal. I can tell you several so called ‘high end’ vodka’s fail this test miserably and only those that pass get a spot in the booze cabinet.

Well, as you know, all great vodkas are always made from virginal grains grown in idyllic locations or from organic, free-range, non-gmo, cage free, fair-trade potatoes…right? Sure they are. Any snob will attest to that fact.

Not so fast! I went to the State Store to get some booze. PA controls the hard liquor retail here, but that isn’t a bad thing, they are one of the largest purchasers in the world and can do amazing things with that power. Anyway, on the shelf was Smithworks Vodka. I purchased it with the intention of destroying it the infamous Coldwarrior and Mrs Coldwarrior taste challenge. This vodka is made from corn, CORN! BLASPHEMY!!! HA! what do they know about vodka in Kansas anyway. We’ll dismiss this pretender quickly and use it to thin out orange juice and as the booze portion for Bloody Marys and then never buy it again! HA! That’ll show those CORN people what great vodka is!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Smithworks passed with flying colors. This is a great vodka. This is truly neutral gain spirit and is so perfectly smooth and no weird tastes.

Enjoy!

The problem w/the Trump presidency is that he’s getting so much done in such a short period of time, that anybody who follows him is going to be dealing with much more demanding expectations.

Visit the United States Patent and Trademark Office online to do a trademark search. You need to make sure no one has already trademarked your band name before you can trademark the name yourself. Click on “Search Marks,” “Word and/or Design Marks” and enter your band’s name.

    smallbusiness.chron.com/legally-trademark-band-name-54670.html

How much does it cost to file a trademark for a band name?
Cost of Registered Trademark. As of the time of publication, the U.S . Patent and Trademark Office charges $325 to register a trademark online using the Trademark Electronic Application System; Paper applications cost $375, according to the U.S. PTO website.

    @ doriangrey:

Sigh… SOOOOO much quicker and easier than it used to be back in the day. Used to take months chasing down all the right forms required to request the correct applications, pay the fee’s get the receipts. All done by snail mail with a federal bureaucracy that moved at only two speeds, backwards, and backwards at the speed of light. (Yes, used to be run by Vogons)

First do the fictions name search, make sure that the name you want isn’t already taken. You will probably be surprised how difficult choosing a name that hasn’t already been taken can be.

Once you have a good valid name, file the application and pay the fee.

Current fees for online are $35 USD vs $50 CAD for simple copyright. For photographs in the U.S. I can copyright 750 at once vs one in Canada. Literary works are a bit different. But there are major cost differences in the U.S. compared to Canada. As in cheaper.

I call bs. Some State flunky who belongs to Hillary sez this whole Russia probe is because “Trump refuses to accept the IC’s report on Russian interference”

Translation: He shows us no respect.

That is total BS. The IC doesn’t believe it, there is not ONE iota of evidence.

    Not.

I remember that scam Brennan tried to pull saying “all 17 intelligence agencies agree…” (It wasn’t true, the NSA didn’t) – and produced one code snippet that was used showing variable names used in other code snippets all over the world. Because coders don’t waste time reinventing the frigging wheel, that’s why there are macros.

For that despicable scam, the IC deserves no respect

It’s a grueling activity. Lots of pain. They don’t wear pads. In many cases, quite the contrary. Ice is hard.

Their skating is MUCH more technical than that of most hockey players. Very little inefficiency of motion.

Lots of figure skaters have gone on to either run power skating clinics for hockey or become individual instructors for players.

I’ll add that a hockey skate blade is MUCH more forgiving than that of a figure skate blade.

Primarily in shape, but also in sharpness (depth of hollow).

It cracks me up, looking back, that when I was a kid the primary rental skate was a figure skate. Between the toe pick and the tang off the back, you’re pretty much asking to crack something open with a misstep.

    @ eaglesoars:

They are both “single-bladed,” and both are sharped to a radius based on the rounded wheel used to sharpen them, giving the single blade two edges on either side of it.

A smaller wheel will give a deeper radius (sharper edges).

It’s a pretty basic and big deal if you’re skating, but at the amateur levels you find what you like and stick with it.

At the the pro levels of both hockey and figure skating participants will adjust according to the state of the ice surface.

Ice is different everywhere depending on the facility compressors, air temp, humidity, and what has been going on in the facility previous to the event.

(If they lay a floor down for a Paul McCartney concert, or the circus was in town previously. They generally do all that on top of the ice.)

The office conducted interviews with two of Mr. Comey’s confidantes: FBI chief of staff James Rybicki and FBI attorney Trisha Anderson.

The Pentagon’s Secret Search for UFOs

    ———————–
The Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program, whose existence was not classified but operated with the knowledge of an extremely limited number of officials, was the brainchild of then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada), who first secured the appropriation to begin the program in 2009 with the support of the late Senators Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Republican Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), two World War II veterans who were similarly concerned about the potential national security implications, the sources involved in the effort said. The origins of the program, the existence of which the Pentagon confirmed on Friday, are being revealed publicly by POLITICO for the first time.

One possible theory behind the unexplained incidents, according to a former congressional staffer who described the motivations behind the program, was that a foreign power—perhaps the Chinese or the Russians—had developed next-generation technologies that could threaten the United States.

“Was this China or Russia trying to do something or has some propulsion system we are not familiar with?” said a staffer who spoke with POLITICO on condition of anonymity.

    []
“After a while the consensus was we really couldn’t find anything of substance,” he recalled. “They produced reams of paperwork. After all of that there was really nothing there that we could find. It all pretty much dissolved from that reason alone—and the interest level was losing steam. We only did it a couple years.”

“There was really nothing there that we could justify using taxpayer money,” he added. “We let it die a slow death. It was well spent money in the beginning.”

The opioid crisis sucks. Inherited a meth addicted mom of 4. Makes me in favor of executing meth dealers in front of a national TV audience as part of a challenge in “Survivor”. What a colossal waste of time, money, and effort.

Meth addicts might be the dumbest people on the face of the planet. I would be in favor of a federal program that separates adults from children at the slightest whiff of meth usage. And what is crazy is that they group together and find other more nefarious ways of abusing drugs if the meth is not available. A lot of it via prescription drugs that they alter and mix. More than I ever wanted to know.

how very odd. I’d been thinking the same thing for quite awhile and then wondered if we already are. By necessity. We all have stuff up in space and everybody has to know who has what in order to avoid mistakes about hostile intent. If anything unidentified wandered in and nobody has an ID, then everyone is going to be checking aren’t they? That yours? Nope, not ours, thought it was yours. And if it’s nobody’s then… we know and everybody has to put their heads together.

What is a ‘lock to lock sequence’? And what does it have to do with ancient mythologies?

Anyhoo, I popped in to share this from our Hollywood betters, Rob Reiner, aka ‘Meathead’, in this case

The topic of Hillary’s loss came up and the huge mistake she made in telling coal miners in W.Va. that she was going to destroy their jobs. Someone said “Those jobs aren’t coming back anyway, they’re not needed”.

It was UNIDENTIFIED that’s for sure.
It was sure as hell FLYING as it manoeuvred , formated on us and flew around us, as noted by both eyes and two independent radars
… and it was an OBJECT that reflected both light because there were LOTS of visual witnesses on the aircraft and both the Auckland RADAR and aircraft RADAR both registered it as solid.

Apart from that… it is what it is a UFO. What more can one say ? We never expected that this would go much further because when push comes to shove there’s nothing to add except speculation and that’s worth zip!

Trump is going to resign any day. That was a fevor theme among the left. Because his taxes would be released, or because he got overwhelmed or whatever – take it to the bank, Trump is going to quit.

The impeachment stuff didn’t start until that dream obviously didn’t come true.

It’s strange. While looking for something else, I stumbled across something I’d completely forgotten about and it was only months ago. It’s still being repeated.

Trump is going to resign any day. That was a fevor theme among the left. Because his taxes would be released, or because he got overwhelmed or whatever – take it to the bank, Trump is going to quit.

The impeachment stuff didn’t start until that dream obviously didn’t come true.

Next up, I suspect we’ll see an extrapolation of the ‘mental illness/dementia’ meme and talk about the 25th amendment. After that fails, I have no idea what they’ll do.

The outrageous allegations against Trump would be actionable if he was not a public figure.
Nothing is over the line and they are far worse than anything that the accuse Trump of.

Without it, there’s no earth under their feet. With every failed prediction of apocalypse, they’ll just get worse. Just like the Arabs, every self-inflicted catastrophe is because of the Jews, everything wrong will be Trump’s fault, even if there’s nothing actually wrong.

What the hell is it w/MSNBC?

Two sources familiar with the situation told The Daily Caller that Matthews paid $40,000 to settle with an assistant producer on his show, “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” in 1999 after she accused him of harassment. An MSNBC spokesperson contested that claim to the Caller, saying the company instead paid significantly less as part of a severance package.

    double down on stupid

As its players continue to protest the National Anthem, the National Football League (NFL) announced it will host an “Advocacy in Sport Workshop” at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, to educate athletes on how to “develop and implement effective advocacy platforms that positively impact society.”

In conjunction with the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE) and Morehouse, the February 21-23, 2018 workshop will teach student athletes how to turn sports into “a powerful platform for advocacy,” NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent said, announcing the workshop:

“Sport has been an international venue for social change since before Jesse Owens swept the 1936 Olympics and opened the world’s eyes to the image of justice and equality.

“This historic workshop is aimed at training the next generation of athletes who wish to use sport as a powerful platform for advocacy. Our partnership is designed to equip athletes as influencers and community leaders with the mechanics to develop their advocacy platform.”

The workshop’s curriculum was created by social activists, academics, professional athletes, and sport administrators in order to “equip athletes with tools and resources to impact social issues respectfully and responsibly.”

But there IS a debate. And there is more data than shown on these films. Everybody has stuff in space and we all know who owns what. When something nobody recognizes pops up – as it must – everybody checks in w/everybody else. Was that yours, nope, thought it was yours.

Major media players start commission for sexual misconduct

The biggest figures and institutions in entertainment have established a commission to be chaired by Anita Hill that intends to combat sexual misconduct and inequality in the industry in the wake of the huge wave of revelations spurred by allegations against Harvey Weinstein.

A statement Friday announced the founding of the Commission on Sexual Harassment and Advancing Equality in the Workplace, a group that grew out of a meeting called by “Star Wars” producer Kathleen Kennedy and several other prominent women in the industry.

“The Commission will not seek just one solution, but a comprehensive strategy to address the complex and interrelated causes of the problems of parity and power,” Kennedy said in a statement.

The chief executives of nearly every major Hollywood studio, TV network and record label attended the meeting and agreed to found and to fund the group, the statement said. The long list includes Disney CEO Bob Iger, Paramount CEO Karen Stuart, Universal Music Group CEO Sir Lucian Grainge and CBS chief executive Leslie Moonves.

The movie and music academies and many of the major agencies and unions that represent entertainers also signed on.

“The fact that so many industry leaders – across film, television, music, digital, unions, agencies … and guilds – came together, in one room, to explore solutions speaks to a new era,” Kennedy said.

The group chose as its chair the law professor Hill, who brought the concept of sexual harassment to national consciousness in 1991 when she testified during the Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Clarence Thomas.

“It is time to end the culture of silence,” Hill said in a statement. “I’ve been at this work for 26 years. This moment presents us with an unprecedented opportunity to make real change.”

so, according to the financial press and some nevertrumpers, america firt policies will destroy the economy, the tax cut is bad for the economy and will cost the gop the majority in the house and senate, the booming economy is an illusion, the stock market is a bubble, nor one word about 4% growth this quarter, and bloomberg is obsessing about the price of a trump christmas ornament.

well, here is what i see: my retirement portfolio makes me smile bigly every week when i review my holdings, there are help wanted signs everywhere, the railroad up river from my house is busier than ive ever seen it, there are coal barges waiting to unload at the terminal across the river (this has never happened), the trades are advertising on the radio for apprentices (iron workers, electricians, carpenters, steamfitters, welders and operating engineers), three big companies up north are advertising for help so they can put on a new shift and open more production lines…

who do i believe, the so called CONservatives, the socialist press, or my own eyes.
