THIS IS AN OPEN THREAD
Ahhhhh, much better. With the end of summer comes College Football! Sadly, I volunteered to work 4 in a row night shifts over the holiday weekend. That said, I will pretty much have every Saturday off for the season…this way I can see my girls cheer at the little-guys football games then come home and catch all the big-guy games. Why do I like college ball so much? Easy, almost none of these players are gonna make it into the NFL. They are out there for the love of the game and to get an education, after their last game they are done. Are there some bad eggs? sure. But mostly, these guys get their education and go get a real job after college.
Right, get on with it…SO here I sit on the deck, smoking a AJ Fernandez Cigar and watching a barn-burner of a game between Purdue and Northwestern, two excellent schools. It’s close in the 4th on Thursday night. Northwestern is driving late and eating clock with a 4 point lead. This year, the NCAA scheduled some important games in week #1 that will have playoff implications. The AP and the Coaches poll look pretty similar, it’s Alabama, Clemson, and Georgia or Ohio State or Wisconsin to round out the top 4. Again this year it’s Alabama’s title to lose.
#17 West Virginia at Tennessee 3:30 PM – The West BY GOD Virginia Moutaineers and the Tennessee Vols have never met. That’s unusual for two old and storied teams like that who are in relative geographic proximity. The ‘Neers are 9 point faves at Rocky Top ooops…at neutral site B of A Stadium in Charlotte. They beat the spread and the misery continues at Tennessee this year. Sorry, Rain.
#6 Washington at #9 Auburn 3:30 PM – The best team in the west travels to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in ‘Hotlanta. It’s Huskies versus War Eagles in this great week 1 game. W is the top ranked team in the Pac-12, Auburn is top 3 or 4 in the SEC. The PAC-12 has under-performed for years against the SEC and in combined bowl wins. To get some respect, W has to win this or the whole PAC-12 will suffer at bowl time. Auburn is a 2 point favorite and they beat that spread.
North Carolina at California 4:00 PM – The Tar-Heels are a 7 point goat on the road to the Berkley Bears. ACC speed meets PAC-12 mediocrity. NC beats the spread and just might pull an upset on the road. I fear Barbarian will be crying in her mocha double shot half fat latte again this year.
#14 Michigan at #12 Notre Dame 7:30 PM – This storied rivalry is usually reserved for a snowy day in November. All eye are on M’s coach, Jim Harbaugh. His program has been pretty bad for the past couple years. ND has an outside chance to make the playoffs if they run the table. They play a lot of quality opponents this year. This game is a toss-up at most betting houses. The Golden Domers win at home.
Incarnate Word at New Mexico 8:00 PM – There is no line on this game, besides, who would dare put money against Incarnate Word? You wanna bet against God? Nope, not me.
#8 Miami at #25 LSU – Sun, Sep 2, 7:30 PM ET – Here we go again, over-ranked Miami again this year…they imploded last year while being touted as the second coming of ‘the u’. They are a 3.5 favorite on the road at Tiger Stadium. LSU, please win this game. But, if I had to bet money, its Miami beating the spread.
#20 Virginia Tech at #19 Florida State – Mon, Sep 3, 8:00 PM ET – FSU is a 7 point favorite at home. They beat the spread.
can i get a witness!

preach it!
@ coldwarrior:
yeah, but at a funeral? Funerals are becoming spectacles. Somebody on Laura Ingraham last nite said soon we’ll be seeing them on Netflix. “Cher’s funeral coming Dec 1! Six episodes! Only on Netflix!”

@ eaglesoars:
Next it will be weddings. I saw the beginnings of it with the black preacher at Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding. Anytime people get a public podium, we’re going to be subjected to whatever political polemic suits their career and/or ego. There will be no public gathering where we won’t get something shoved down our throats and up our asses whether we like it or not. I’m tired of being preached at, yelled at, scolded, threatened and told what to do or else.
And if I hear “We have to have a national conversation…” one more time, I’m going to hurt somebody. Preferably Yawn Williams.
@ eaglesoars:
Ever read about Caesar’s funeral?
There is nothing new under the sun, nor is what this preacher did anything new.
He had the un-churched right where he needed them to be, a captive audience.
Preaching to the choir on Sunday is not heard by these folks.

yes. That is what came to mind the other day when I posted that the McCain spectacle might as well be Caesar’s funeral, only he’d fallen in battle.
Two more days of this nonsense. I’m up to my back teeth with the entire McCain family.
@ eaglesoars:
They are ghouls and leeches.
McCain’s funeral is a giant political stunt…yet, this is nothing new.
@ coldwarrior:
morning
yeah, gonna be a tough year on rocky top
new coach, new hope
but we went 4-8 last year and lost every conference game
maybe 5-7 this year with 1 win in conference
seems like we’ve been in a rebuilding phase for the last 15 yrs

It’s not pretty in Vol land
Game day baby! the Notre Dame/Micigan rivalry game is back in prime time after a four year hiatus.
ND joined the ACC in basketball, a condition of which was the football team playing some ACC opponents,
while maintaining Independent status.
ND made schedule space in part by suspending the Miciggan game for four years. The legions from Ann Arbor
decided to taunt Notre Dame before the game four years ago. The mantra was that ND feared the Wolveines.
So ND dispatched them 33 to 0. so crickets from Ann Arbor. This is a revenge game.for Michigan and a slew of Big Big Ten alum will don their “Muck Fichigan” shirts.
my prediction is that the Irish will take it to em again and crash Michigan’s season in week 1 and Touchdown Jesus
will be pleased. Hey it’s his mothers school.

To quote George Orwell, “In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act”. The hatred being poured out on Rev Williams, is because he dared to tell the truth.
@ doriangrey:
More Rev. Willams, fewer Sharpton and Jackson’s.

now THAT is speaking truth to f-ing power

That he did. Not sure it was appropriate at a funeral, but I know that at funerals we have, if it is known that there are those in the family or relatives who either have strayed from the faith or are otherwise lost, the message will be an evangelism sermon.
An amusing bit of TDS. Check out the picture
@ RIX:
A guy I used to work with went to ND and he said the MU fans would dump cups of piss on the ND Players as they took the field. Hated those guys.

My daughter went to Illinois , and all of the kids there despised Michigan fans. Their behavior at Notre Dame
does not shock me. The antipathy toward Michigan was not because they win so much. Ohio State wins and they
are not looked at that way. Go Irish!

@ Time Magazine
At the gym this morning I saw this eulogy by Megan McCain for her father.
I have sympathy for her, but I thought that the gratuitous slaps at Trump were really inaarporiate.
Trump was already barred from the funeral as one of McCains final wishes, and he took slaps at Trump
in his farewell letter. That should have been enough. In my opinion she cheapened her tribute.
I also do not see why Ivanka and her husband were there. If your father is barred, don’t go.
Just my opinion.
RIX wrote:
It’s not a tribute. It’s a political stunt, in CW’s words. Obama apparently followed up with something about people engaging in bombast and phoney outrage.
The McCain family should be careful what they wish for. Long memories aren’t always a blessing.
vols not looking good at all

ok, one last petty bitch remark before I turn in. I’ve seen all this pics of Megan McCain, sobbing, in tears, yada yada, but never with a dry eye.
And her eye makeup stays perfect.
I’m here to tell you, that doesn’t happen. Mascara doesn’t stand up to tears, waterproof or no and false eyelashes fall off.
It’s been more than 3 days now and he hasn’t risen, so I think we’re safe.
nite
Congrats to ND for beating TTUN.
Watched the Buckeye game this morning on YouTube (sue me, I’m old) and despite the many penalties and stupid mistakes, OSU has a young, but talented deep pool to draw from. They will be NC contenders this year if they don’t lose to many thru injuries.
Looking forward to the Penn state game at the end of the month as that is becoming a heated rivalry (Penn State crew already talking smack on my board).
@ Buckeye Abroad:
The ND/Michigan game was a tale of two halfs. In the first half ND looked like a bowl champion playoff team.
Winbush looked like a Hieisman Trophy cadidate in the first half, but in the second half the offense didn’t
show up.
This is a common theme with Brian Kelly. They have to get better, but a win is a win.
Some music for a Sunday morning. The concert that became Joe Bonamassa’s “British Blues Explosion Live” album:
Is this thing on? Last post I see is from Lobo at 1303
