So Collins is making a statement at 3:00 p.m. on her vote.

Jason Van Dyke verdict to be announced at 1:45 CDT today.
I’m in Oakland. This could be dicey.

Susan Collins really sounds like she’s bringing it home

  5. 5 | October 5, 2018 3:25 pm

Van Dyke convicted of 2nd Degree Murder. Of course, the mob wanted 1st Degree. I hate it when prosecutors over-reach in their indictments. Unless he drove there to kill him premeditation is not evident.

  6. 6 | October 5, 2018 3:27 pm

    @ eaglesoars:

I hope so. But I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Now Murkowski is trying to say she hasn’t made up her mind about confirmation. Guess Alaskans are burning up the phone lines. That or maybe McConnell told her she’s going to be sitting on committees that don’t do crap, if ANY.

I’ve seen more than my share of cop videos and that one was heartbreaking and infuriating. I simply cannot imagine any defense for that one.

    @ eaglesoars:

Well done. I think this Mob Rule is starting to make a lot of people angry, even the moderate Dems.

Oh, and McCaskill is now down 8 points in polling in Missouri after announcing she won’t vote for Kavanaugh.

    @ The Barbarian:

here’s a good backgrounder on what is needed to convict on ‘witness tampering’

But the language in 18 U.S. Code § 1512 is “corruptly persuades.” Was McLean’s effort “corrupt”? That, I think, would be much harder to prove. It is not a crime to talk to a witness and try to convince them that they are wrong, or that they are failing to remember a pertinent detail. Nor is it illegal to tell them that they should “believe” what another person says, even as they catastrophically undermine the story they say they think is true. Unless Keyser came forward with evidence that she was bullied, bribed, or threatened in some way, it seems unlikely that this will lead anywhere legally. (That is in no way to say that it shouldn’t be taken as yet more evidence that Ford’s claim is extremely weak.)

  11. 11 | October 5, 2018 4:04 pm

Let’s all sing along with Lisa Murkowski….”The Cheese stands alone.”

    Manchin is a yes. That’s 51.

  12. eaglesoars
    12 | October 5, 2018 4:08 pm

and of course Manchin is a yes

    what a gutless POS

I see Ben Sasse declared his ‘yes’ vote a few hours ago but no one is paying attention to him

  13. 13 | October 5, 2018 4:17 pm

    @ eaglesoars:

You know, I wonder in the end if Murkowski will be a “yes” but she doesn’t want the batsh*t mobs outside her office door.

I remember back in the 70s, psych 101 learning about one side being keyed into the arts and creativity and the other to more techy things, math etc., but I’ve been outta school for a LONG time now.
Yeah I can google it but I trust the crowd here to steer me in the right direction (no pun…) more than I trust google (and not adverse to kissin’ a little a** to get what I want either, lol). If its a ‘dead end’ then knowing this upfront would also be a big help.

The hive mind in all its glory. Jonathan Chait, one of the swains of NYC ‘journalism’, Sep 26

<emJulie Swetnick’s Allegations Likely to Finish Off Brett Kavanaugh

    http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2018/09/julie-swetnicks-allegations-brett-kavanaugh-withdraw.html

As the heady brew of threatened male prerogative — the principle that withdrawing Kavanaugh would expose any man to such charges — and partisan tribalism wears off, cold calculation will soon set in. The odds that many people are conspiring to lie about Kavanaugh are growing ever more slender. And the odds are growing that Kavanaugh committed to a lie, and sunk ever deeper into it, knowing that he would either have a lifetime appointment to the most prestigious legal job in America or be disgraced, and that is why he has refused to concede even an inch. That, too, is why he dodged a question from Fox News about letting his friend, Mark Judge, testify under oath.

This is why I asked the above question. How can 2 people see the same situation so differently ? There is virtually zero evidence, in fact quite the opposite, that he did what she claims and yet …
I’m still losing old friends (and I mean looong ass time friends) over this crap and I just sit here shaking my head not even knowing where to start with them or even if I should bother. I go back and forth, ‘let it go’ and then ‘give ’em a call’. The latest isn’t some flighty sjw, hes a retired construction foreman and as rough and tough as a guy can get yet he insults me over this Kavanaugh accusation and doesn’t talk to me anymore. I can deal with it, no baby here myself but wtf ? There has to be some logical explanation.

CW would know better. On the surface of it though, people who are tremendously accomplished in the Sciences and the Arts are capable of really nutty political opinions. Human behavior has so many variables
attached. The most mature people can retain child like belief systems. From there you can go towards a discussion of free will versus determinism. And I still can’t answer your question, lol.

That is way too general imo. To make a similar sweeping statement, liberals are less tolerant of any point of view that doesn’t suit their belief system. Conservatives by their nature are less inclined to riot if an election doesn’t go their way. Liberals are far more likely to label you as a bigot. (out loud I mean)

    damn
nobody can bring it like ace
    http://ace.mu.nu/

I had thought that Clinton’s single quarter of 3.8% unemployment would stand as the all-time post-war low, and that Democrats would always be able to point to that as proof that Socialism Can Work.

Nope! Now there’s a new post-war record to beat: Trump’s.

From now on, that will be the reference-standard of post-war economic strength.

    Not Clinton’s weak, cuckish 3.8%.

Has the world blown up yet? Just checking. I keep being told the world will blow up if Trump is president.

    3.7%.

    Suck a dick, h8rz.

Or, as Dennis Reynolds said in this week’s Always Sunny: “Begone from me, you soy-boy beta cuck. Our transaction is complete. BEGONE!!!!”

And where would it have been without Gates and Co ? That period was like Henry Fords mass production, Edison’s electricity and Bells telephone.
    Clinton got lucky.

I’m just wondering if society has always had such a great number of robots and we’re just now seeing them due to social media or if there really is a change in people who simply must go along with what is essentially a mob

I think that throughout history, the bulk of humans are ready to follow the crowd. The crowds being whipped up with “Crucify him1” comes to mind. It’s very easy to be led and most people are lazy, they don’t really want to do the hard work of finding out the facts. Besides, it feels good to be part of “the crowd”, so there is a self-reinforcing element to mob actions.

The question is whether they won the next battle. How hard will it be for Trump to get his next nominee to accept the nomination when RBG goes the way of all flesh? Will the next highly qualified judge be willing to go through and put their family through what Kavenaugh just endured?

There needs to be some serious, no kidding prosecution and convictions from this debacle — or the democrats will have won by intimidating the next nominee to turn down the nomination.

good points all. BUT. There are two armies here and theirs is demoralized. How do you keep mentally ill people satisfied if you can’t fulfill their fantasy utopia? They’ll drift away, get overtaken by the normal events of life. The hardcore will stay and redraft new battle plans. What will they look like and where will the cannon fodder come from?

There is one great risk and it is a serious one. Assassination. In that case, all bets are off and it’s a shooting war.
