Independence Day 4 July 1918

I might have posted these before. They are envelopes decorated by my great-grandfather and mailed to his son (my grand-uncle) who was stationed in France in the U.S. Signal Corps in WWI. Walter received them on 10 August 1918, and replied with this letter:

“…I saw a peach of an air battle last night. Believe me that is exciting stuff to see them diving and darting around like a couple of birds. That’s about all I can tell you. I can’t tell you who licked. Some of the best fliers are located near us. I guess there are a few “aces” among the bunch.

…Pap says the war will be over in a year making it July 4th 1919. I don’t want to shatter his hopes but I think about the fall of 1920 myself. That is simply my estimate. Maybe last longer or maybe  not as long.”

Late last year I asked Walter’s daughter if she’d allow me to post her father’s letters, in sequence beginning in February 1918, as if in real time. For personal reasons she declined, and I’ll respect her wishes. Meanwhile, here’s to a fun and respectful Independence Day for The Overnight Open Thread.

Pro-Palestinian dupes plan on mass ‘fly-in’ to Tel Aviv airport

I have an idea – hold them hostage for Gilad Shalit. Let us see them try to pull the same stunt at the Damascus Airport.

New York activist Laura Durkay plans to name Palestine as her destination when she lands at Ben-Gurion Airport this Friday, even though such a response is likely to ensure her deportation.

As pro-Palestinian activists are struggling to set sail to Gaza from Greece, a separate informal group is targeting Ben-Gurion airport.

Durkay is one of 700 activists, mostly from Europe, who plan to land in Ben Gurion on the same day, in an event titled, “Welcome Palestine.” They hope to support Palestinian statehood and the struggle of the Palestinian people against Israel’s “occupation” of the West Bank.

They also want to make a statement about the importance of freedom of movement and access into the Palestinian territories.

The Foreign Ministry has already said that it plans to prevent the group’s entry into Israel. Israel has in the past denied entry to international activists it believes plan to create disturbances while they are here.

As a result many international activists tend to misrepresent the purpose of their visit when quizzed by border control officials at the airport.

“Instead of lying about their destination, they will say that they are coming for a week of solidarity with the Palestinian people,” Israeli activist Sergio Yahini said.

If they are allowed to enter, they will participate In a week of solidarity activities, he said. If they are denied entry, there will be a demonstration at the airport and Israel will have to deal with the deportation of 700 activists, he said.

On a video posted on Youtube, Palestinian activist Lubna Marsawa said, “What we are planning for the 8th of July, could be the beginning of the marches to Palestine.”

She added, “We are fed up with words and we need to take action.”

Jim Morrison the lead singer for The Doors died 40 years ago today, he was found dead in a bathtub in Paris

I loved The Doors but never understood romanticizing Jim Morrison. He died a horrible death at the age of 27.

by Kathleen Perricone

Forty years ago today, Jim Morrison died at the age of 27 — and broke on through to the other side.

The Doors singer’s body was discovered by his girlfriend, Pamela Courson, in a bathtub in his Paris apartment on July, 3 1971.

Persuant to French law, no autopsy was performed on Morrison because foul play was not suspected — and that only added to the mystery surrounding his death.

After returning to the U.S., Courson told Danny Sugerman, the manager of The Doors, that Morrison had died of a heroin overdose after ingesting what he thought was cocaine. Later, Sugerman says Courson, a heroin addict herself, changed her story a number of times, and even admitted she had killed Morrison.

Twenty years after Morrison’s death, friends Alain Ronay and Agnes Varda broke their silence and gave their account of what happened that day.

The two admitted that when they arrived at Morrison’s apartment, Courson told them that they had both taken heroin after a night of drinking, and Morrison began coughing so badly, he was vomiting blood. When he seemed better, she went to sleep. But when she awoke a short time later, she found him in the bath unresponsive and called for help.
