Despite cool temps and a steady rain, hundreds lined the streets of the eastern Connecticut hamlet of Moosup to view the 50th edition of the VJ-Day Parade. This parade is one of the very few in the country, it is put on by the towns local American Legion Post. Veterans members, spectators from as far away as Ohio made the trek to this years event. American Legion posts groups, bands, scout troops, local fire and police departments, the Young Marines and others braved the elements to step off at 1:01 pm, the time when hostilities ended in the Pacific Theater in 1945. The units were led by this years Grand Marshall 90+ year old Pearl Harbor survivor Willbert “Tex” Dettman. The towns First Selectman commended the organizers for another great parade, despite the economic problems, they put on another great show. As it is known we are losing many WWII vets everyday. One member, I had photographed last year passed away only a few days after last years parade.
