Jobs Report

by coldwarrior ( 121 Comments › )
Filed under Donald Trump, Economy, Open thread, unemployment at March 8th, 2018 - 6:27 am

Tell me again how Trump will ruin the economy?

Businesses added 235,000 jobs in February, payroll processor ADP said Wednesday, more than the 200,000 gains economists had expected.

That could possibly signal that a key employment report from the government will reveal more signs of strong hiring later this week.

“The job market is red hot and threatens to overheat,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, which helps ADP compile the report. “With government spending increases and tax cuts, growth is set to accelerate.”… Still, initial jobless claims, a gauge of layoffs, have hovered at the lowest levels in nearly 50 years. With unemployment at a 17-year low of 4.1%, that’s a good sign of a healthy labor market.

Odd that this isn’t front page news… /

this rpt makes it sound as tho the only reason for the bump in construction is from hurricane re-building. If correct, that’s a bit disappointing.

I was talking to a real estate agent who lives down the street and asked about the market. NO INVENTORY. Of course, this is D.C., so it’s not a ‘normal’ picture, but still. That IS an incentive for construction. Demographics may be impacting that tho. People aren’t getting married in the same patterns they used to and single people don’t usually buy houses.

  2. 2 | March 8, 2018 8:55 am

    @ eaglesoars:

In economic terms, housing construction is ALWAYS a lagging indicator at best.

“The job market is red hot and threatens to overheat,”

This on 235,000 jobs added in February? What complete and utter bullshit. This thinking is the consequences of 16 straight years of constant lowering expectation as the new normal. Way back in 1998, February only adding 235,000 new jobs was seen as an indication that the economy was in trouble.

Under GW, the Marxist Propaganda press was constantly telling us that we needed 235,000 new jobs a month just to maintain a even economic baseline due to the natural birthrate in America.

    @ eaglesoars:

I imagine the rebuilding in Napa is also a bump here in California. My roofer guy (who did my new roof at a great price because I’m his neighbor – it still works that way in America) was telling me the other day that they’re working weekends these days in getting the homes in Santa Rosa rebuilt.

But even so, I’m seeing warehouse jobs all over the place (Football Savant Offspring is switching careers). People that lost jobs during Obummer’s tenure are now able to take their pick of jobs where they were getting a couple days here, a couple days there.

And I’m willing to bet that UNLIKE Obummer, these are FULL-TIME jobs. His Labor Dept. fudged the numbers, using those with part-time jobs to drive down the unemployment number. Also the “jobless” claims BS as people were taken off their 99 weeks of unemployment and then jerked the system by trying to move onto Social Security disability.

Thank you, I thought it was just me. I don’t remember the background as well you do but I certainly didn’t see it as an ‘overheating’ issue. And if it were, don’t you think they’d mention wage pressure? Also, I think the type of jobs is important. 235k ‘hospitality’ jobs have a completely different meaning that 235k manufacturing jobs.

Thank you. On the positive side, Grand-pa Ron was the last of the “Infirm” in the family. Not that my brother Cliff or Sister were infirm before cancer took them. But undiagnosed diseases/illnesses aside, everyone else is relatively healthy. So, baring any unforeseen accidents, there really isn’t anyone else that I can see dying any time soon.

    13 | March 8, 2018 11:53 am

It’s still not easy to move across jobs and occupations. Benefits are lost. Sometimes critical benefits. So it becomes risky to move if you have a family. I did a move and lost dental insurance that added $4,000 last year to family costs. There were benefits to the move but dental care was a casualty. You scramble. Delay treatments. Pay just ahead of being farmed out to a collection agency. And find out your internet service is no longer robust and the cell connections have dead spots in your location. First world problems. My moving checklist seemed to account for none of the hidden costs.

Yea, they kept dropping that number every year of Obama Presidency because the jobs rate kept falling. It started off back around 9/11/01 at if memory serves me correctly around 285,000 per month. But of course, that was under a republican POTUS and they were trying to blame the end of the world on him.

  15. 15 | March 8, 2018 12:38 pm

    @ doriangrey:

Oh, and let’s not forget that Obama’s Labor Department counted PART-TIME jobs in that job count, as well as part of the unemployment rate. Traditionally, part-time jobs were not included in either total, if I recall correctly. Obama needed to include them to make his numbers look good.

Yup I saw that performance by the mayor of Baltimore. She went in determined to answer no posed questions and was determined to filibuster for the whole 7 minutes, which she successfully did. Did you notice the sly smiles now and then that she couldn’t suppress? This moron actually believed that her play acting was actually something positive. It shows the depths to which the Marxist progressive left have arrived at. The mayor wasn’t there to answer anything. Her job was to waste time of her enemies and give give the verbal finger to the audience. She succeeded. Alas for her the deeper aims were missed by a mile. Red Robin does have a great onion ring tower. However, this has to be in places where there’s a $15 minimum wage. I don’t think we even have this in Calfiornia yet (but we’re getting there).

    ALIEN ICE!!!

What scientists found trapped in a diamond: a type of ice not known on Earth
    http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/space/go-for-launch/la-sci-sn-water-in-diamonds-20180308-story.html

Trapped in the rigid structure of diamonds formed deep in the Earth’s crust, scientists have discovered a form of water ice that was not previously known to occur naturally on our planet.

The finding, published Thursday in Science, represents the first detection of naturally occurring ice-VII ever found on Earth. And as sometimes happens in the scientific process, it was discovered entirely by accident.

Ice-VII is about one and a half times as dense as the regular ice we put in our drinks and skate on in winter, and the crystalline structure of its atoms is different as well.

In normal ice, known as ice-I, the oxygen atoms arrange themselves in a hexagonal shape. In ice-VII these atoms are arranged in a cubic shape

    huh, who knew?

    this came out yesterday

    ——–

Scientists have found a never-before-seen mineral in a diamond formed deep in the Earth’s mantle. Thought to be the planet’s fourth most abundant mineral, calcium silicate perovskite is usually buried 400 miles below the surface.

The diamond provides “fundamental proof” of the long-theorized idea that slabs of oceanic crust that sink deep within the Earth are recycled into the lower mantle, researchers said.

    http://www.newsweek.com/minerals-perovskite-diamond-836197

The caption on the 2nd pic says it’s of the diamond but I think it could only be a portion, it doesn’t have a crystalline structure, so I think it’s a close up of the inclusion.

“Manufacturing added 31,000 jobs in February,” the Bureau of Labor Statistics said in its monthly employment report released today. “Within the industry, employment rose in transportation equipment (+8,000), fabricated metal products (+6,000), machinery (+6,000), and primary metals (+4,000).”

The last time there were more manufacturing jobs in the United States than there were in February was in December 2008, the last month before President Barack Obama took office. That month, according to BLS, there were 12,850,000 manufacturing jobs. But, in January 2009, the month Obama was inaugurated, manufacturing jobs dropped to 12,561,000—and did not move back above 12,600,000 until last month.

Virginia Social Worker: I Was Fired Over My Concealed Carry Permit

The National Rifle Association has filed a lawsuit over Florida’s new gun law, which increases the age to buy rifles in the state from 18 to 21. Republican Gov. Rick Scott signed the bill yesterday. Yet, the pro-Second Amendment organization should consider joining another lawsuit in Virginia, where a social worker was reportedly fired for being a concealed carry holder. On Facebook yesterday, Storm Durham, a social services worker, described how three Roanoke police officers escorted her out of her office. She said some of the officers had accompanied her on child services visits. Durham was also not allowed to use the bathroom on her way out due to safety concerns. On Twitter, Durham said that she’s already obtained lawyers.

“I have a concealed carry permit. I own guns. I hunt. I target shoot. I represent Women hunters and outdoorswomen. Does that make me a criminal? Does that make me a safety risk to others? A big enough safety risk to be escorted by three Roanoke City Police officers?” asked Durham of what appears to be a humiliating ordeal. “So scary and threatening that I need to be treated like a criminal?” she added.

Durham said that she never brought her firearm to the office, and that she bought one for self-protection being a survivor of sexual assault.

“I am an American, a gun owner, and a proud sponsor of hunting across America, and I, nor my lawyers, judges, or support systems will rest until something is done until someone answers for punishing me and taking away my constitutional right,” she declared.

Abolishing ICE Looks Likely To Become 2020 Campaign Issue For Democrats

Left-wing pundits and activists are increasing pressure on Democratic politicians to embrace the fringe position of abolishing ICE.

Once a fringe idea on the far-left, abolishing the nation’s immigration enforcement agency now looks likely to become a campaign issue in the Democrats’ 2020 presidential primary.

Former Hillary Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon came out for abolishing the agency in January. “ICE operates as an unaccountable deportation force,” Fallon argued. “Dems running in 2020 should campaign on ending the agency in its current form.”

“Should ICE exist?” MSNBC host Chris Hayes asked Democratic California Sen. Kamala Harris on Thursday. Harris’s answer — “certainly” ICE should exist — sparked a backlash among some liberals.

Liberal writer Jack Mirkinson on Friday slammed Harris for her answer in an article titled, “Not Good Enough, Kamala Harris.”

“Any serious defender of undocumented people in this country would look at ICE and know that it is a cancer that needs to be excised from the U.S. Pretending that the most diseased levers of state power can be molded into something better is a useless fantasy. ICE must be abolished. Anything less is not good enough,” Mirkinson wrote on Splinter, a left-wing website.

“Kamala Harris is very likely running for president in 2020. It should be a political problem for her that she is not willing to take her criticisms of ICE to their logical conclusion and call for its abolition. She should be asked, over and over again, why exactly she is willing to uphold the legitimacy of such a racist, corrupt, and thuggish organization,” Markinson concluded.

“Anyone else who decides to run—Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren, Eric Garcetti, you name it—should be asked the same question.”
