An open, and a passing

RIP, Richard Overton

Richard Overton, once the nation’s oldest living World War II veteran, died Thursday at the age of 112. The Texas native passed away from complications with pneumonia, which landed him in the hospital earlier this month, said his family.

Overton was born in Bastrop County, Tex., on May 11, 1906, and jointed the military in 1940 — more than a year before the Pearl Harbor bombing — at Fort Sam Houston Base, reported TV station WHAM.

He served in the South Pacific from 1940 through 1945, which included assignments in Hawaii, Iwo Jima, Guam and Palau. He left the Army in October 1945, after the end of World War II.
After completing his service, Overton worked at several furniture stores before accepting a position at the Texas Department of Treasury in Austin.

Even in his advanced age, he often could be found in Austin drinking whisky and smoking a cigar, Statesman reported.

His cousin Volma Overton Jr. recalled how it resembled Christmas in 2017 while celebrating his 111th birthday. Well-wishers lined up to take a photo with the birthday boy and offered gifts.

“It looks like everybody’s getting ready to take a picture with Santa Claus — and he never turns anyone down,” said Volma Overton Jr. last year. “He’s an open person to everybody, and he wanted everyone who was in town who wanted to come by to come by.”

Even more amazing, Overton reportedly drove until he was 107. It was about that time me met then-President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden while attending the Veterans Day Breakfast at the White House.

God willing, we’ll finish the move this weekend. New Furniture is in. TV and internet are hooked up. Truck is reserved. Friends on call.

Traffic was really light today. Waze sent me towards LA then said, “LOL. Turn around and start over.”
Sometimes Waze can be a real asshole.

    @ yenta-fada:
Very clever, but I would have done it with double-barrel Carter carburetors and turned the image into a Chrysler 440.

    @ Bunk X:
We can supply beer. Cake would have to wait until Mrs RW can bake.

In case anyone still harbors the mistaken belief that there’s something known as “free speech” today:

Inside Facebook’s Secret Rulebook for Global Political Speech

Under fire for stirring up distrust and violence, the social network has vowed to police its users. But leaked documents raise serious questions about its approach.

    @ Bunk X:
Mrs RW’s carrot cake is about the best I’ve had. Her recipe is from a friend’s late fiancé. She was incredible. He’d take one of her cakes to work and people would swarm him.

so, um, would she be willing to share the recipe?

A poster over at zip’s posted this (‘Feet2fire’ I believe). I never knew it existed and I’m just now exploring but it looks like fun. It’s the archive of everything!
