Gavin Newsom wants California to be its own nation-state in the Trump era

ust five weeks into the job, Gov. Gavin Newsom has crystallized his vision of what California will look like in the Trump era: It won’t just be the hub of the resistance against the president; it will be its own nation-state.

But before Newsom can create a country-within-a-country, he had to defuse two multibillion-dollar grenades that his predecessor, Gov. Jerry Brown, left in his in-box: high-speed rail and the delta tunnels project. In proposing Tuesday to scale back both of Brown’s unpopular legacy projects, Newsom hopes he can preserve enough political capital to get his own legacy projects on the fast track.

If he can do that, he can lead California down its own path for as long as Trump is president. California must go it alone, because Trump’s portrait of America is “fundamentally at odds with California values,” the governor said Tuesday in his first State of the State speech.

Newsom said the president has “described a country where inequality doesn’t seem to be a problem, where climate change doesn’t exist, and where the greatest threat we face comes from families seeking asylum.”

So California, as the world’s fifth-largest economy, is going to be a counterweight, a West Coast enclave built on its own values and funded, in part, by an anticipated $21.6 billion surplus.

      @ lobo91:

Happy to oblige Gavin. We’ll take all that money that would normally have gone to your “nation-state” and use it to build the wall.

    3. 3 | February 13, 2019 10:11 am

And notice that he says “an ANTICIPATED $21.6 billion surplus.”
And what is California’s DEBT right now, Gavin? $155 billion. How the hell do you get a SURPLUS out of this?

This is priceless. Avenutti was mocking Trump’s attorney for asking for an extension of time to file his Answering Brief in the defamation suit appeal. Thread is here:

      https://twitchy.com/brettt-3136/2019/02/12/celebrity-lawyer-michael-avenatti-has-some-big-news-on-his-appeal-in-that-defamation-suit-against-trump/

Really, Nutso? Asking for an extension for filing a 9th Circuit brief, be it the Opening, Answering or Reply, is as routine as a 6-month dental checkuup.

Avenutti has since deleted the initial tweet. Probably because he was being so vigorously MOCKED by lawyers and “civilians” alike.

      Well this is inconvenient.

The view of Tommy Robinson in the U.S. is VERY different from the view of Tommy Robinson in the U.K. Regardless of the injustices visited on him by the authorities, people won’t go to bat for him because “he’s not our kind” and that cuts across every class of person I’ve encountered. Don’t ever let people tell you that Britain isn’t still riven by class consciousness, it is, down to the bone. And it’s ugly.

So imagine my delight when I read this:

Robinson said: “Just look at what these BBC journalists and Execs do with your hard-earned licence fee money! It’s an absolute disgrace, not only do they think we are cannibals but they use our licence fee for £220 champagne lunches!”

Mr Sweeney was caught on camera saying during an apparent expenses funded lunch: “Which is the Champagne and the double Gin? And then we’re going to have some red wine but we’ll panic about that at an appropriate moment.

“Here I am on expenses in a boozer with the dog and a fire.

“I think we should have one more bottle of win. F**k it, no expense spared.”

Is this really what we expected out licence fee money to be spent on? I don’t think so! I for one cannot wait for more clips to be released.

Sweeney is a BBC exec and the Brits pay an outrageous license fees to have a TV – which supports the BBC and their champagne lunches.

Robinson has 10 hours of this and BBC resignations are expected any day.

I know I’ve told you guys about this before. When we used to have to go to the Hill for hearings at some god awful hour, we’d hire someone to stand in line for us. There are companies that do this, they hire mostly college kids. Well, guess who just discovered it. And she thinks they’re all homeless people.

      Yep. AOC Goes to Washington.

Shock doesn’t begin to cover it.

Today I left a hearing on homelessness & saw tons of people camped outside committee.

I turned to my staff and asked if it was a demonstration.

“No,” they said. “Lobbyists pay the homeless + others to hold their place so they can get in 1st.”

      “Lobbyists”

A Surprise Virtual Visit From the President

WEBSTER SPRINGS, W.Va.—No sitting president has ever visited here before. So it was a pretty big deal when 14 local high school students in a civics class had President Trump talking to them in their classroom Wednesday, all thanks to a Skype video call that Sen. Joe Manchin was having with them.

Senior Brennan Williams, 18, is still grinning ear to ear a few days after the experience. “Well, I mean, I’ve never talked to somebody that important before, and it was just crazy,” he said of initially talking to Manchin. “Then, the president of the United States calls the senator and then decides he wants to talk to us, well, that was even crazier. I just couldn’t stop smiling; I still can’t.”

His classmate Parker Stout, 18, says it was an honor he will never forget: “We prepared for our Skype call with Sen. Manchin by watching the State of the Union Address Tuesday night. What we never expected was that that would include talking to the president.”

Manchin said the once-in-a-lifetime event was organized by Webster County High School Principal Stacey Cutlip and his office to discuss issues that came up during the State of the Union address, as well as other topics.

Manchin explained in an interview with the Washington Examiner: “They wanted to talk about the environment. They want to talk about coal, the jobs possibilities, what’s going to happen. And they want to talk about guns. As you know, that’s usually a big thing. But now the front burner was about the shutdown, how we’re going to handle it and border security.”

“So, we were talking about all those things, and we were 20 minutes or so into our conversation, and I see on my cellphone ‘Unknown’ pops up. Well I know the way it pops up, it’s either going to be someone from Schumer’s office or McConnell’s office calling about something,” he continued. “Or maybe the White House. You never know.”

Turns out it was the White House, specifically, President Trump’s assistant.

Manchin told the kids he needed to put them on pause for a few minutes, and all Stout and Williams saw from their vantage point, they explained, was a black screen. A few moments later, Manchin came back and told the students he had “a little surprise” for them.

Manchin put the phone on speaker, and the president started to chat with the kids.

Stout said: “Not everybody in the room you know is politically for Trump, but in that moment that didn’t matter, just that fact that you’re going to listen to the president talk to a small group of kids. Everyone had a smile on their face and was just so surprised and couldn’t really say anything. We just listened to him and smiled.”

And WHO didn’t see this one coming:

      http://us24news.com/breaking-panicked-democrats-attack-mueller/

Now that it appears that despite their claims of so many indictments! So many pleas! So much this and that nonsense for the past two years, Mueller is going to come up empty on Trump collusion (but we all knew that from the get-go). So now Democrats in Congress, and their sycophants, who were all waiting for that report that was going to impeach the President and throw him in jail, and not getting that late Christmas present they were hoping for, are now going on the attack on Mueller. That he hasn’t “adequately” investigated.

      Adam Schiffty is hardest hit:

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) kicked off a torrent of criticism on Wednesday, according to the Washington Examiner, questioning whether “Mueller has adequately investigated President Trump’s financial dealings with a German bank,” and suggesting that Mueller’s investigation could be so “woefully incomplete” that the House has no choice but to resume investigating the president themselves.

Auntie Maxie Pad is going to use her chairmanship of the House Finance Committee to go after the bank records. Uh, Maxie? You don’t have that kind of oversight to investigate a private citizen’s business dealings. I hope they fight Maxie Pad and Schifty tooth and nail on this.

I just asked @SpeakerPelosi in the hallway about @VP’s recent comments about Ilhan Omar and of this is going to continue to be an issue for Democrats. Her response:

“I don’t know what you mean. That she apologized for what she said? I think the administration owes a public apology for the some of the things that were said there. As I heard the President speaking this morning, all that was going through my mind was ‘Jew-S-A, Jew-S-A’ at his rallies that he never distanced himself from. They shouldn’t go down this path, they do not have clean hands.”

So….Bill Gates believes that no one deserves to be as rich as he is:

      https://www.iol.co.za/news/world/nobody-deserves-to-be-this-rich-bill-gates-19277011

The 63-year-old, who is worth around £73 billion ($96.5 billion), said he and other business barons should have to contribute more.

In an interview with the Mail, he said: ‘I have paid more than $10billion (£7.75billion) in taxes but I should have paid more. I more than followed the law but I think things should be more progressive.’

The father of three made his fortune after founding Microsoft in 1975. It is now one of the world’s most valuable companies.

I agree, Bill, especially since you and your partners did none of the initial work or came up with the initial ideas that fueled what would become Microsoft. You purchased a disk operating system from a guy in New Mexico and you appropriated technology that Xerox had developed (the concept of screen windows and the mouse, for starters). You literally didn’t “build that”. You were fortunate enough that Xerox still believed it was the hardware that was valuable.

That being said, there is nothing in the world that prevents you from paying more taxes that required by statute. Write a check to the IRS for 5 billion. We can build the wall. Shouldn’t matter to you anyway – you get all your HB-1 visa holders from India through Canada anyway.

However, if you’re still troubled by your excessive wealth, I’ll gladly forward you my banking information and willingly shoulder some of the burden for you, you effing drama queen.

      NYC fucks up again

AMAZON CANCELS PLAN TO COME TO NEW YORK

“After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens” – Amazon spokeswoman Jodi Seth

      https://twitter.com/jdavidgoodman/status/1096087641953632258

    43. 43 | February 14, 2019 12:06 pm

      @ eaglesoars:

And here’s where AOC is going to have a problem come re-election time. She was absolutely ecstatic awhile ago over the prospect that Amazon would NOT be building its headquarters in Queens or even in New York.

The project would have brought 25,000 jobs with it, and I imagine many of them would have been entry level for the unskilled in the district. It would have brought corporate taxes into the New York coffers when it has recently been revealed that they are sorely needed.

I hear the Blexit founder is going to run against her. I don’t know if he’s going to run as GOP or a Democrat (I personally think he should run as the latter and switch to the former once he’s seated in Congress; it might do some good to see these Democrat districts see what a Republican can do to fix them).

But I do predict that he will decimate this idiot.

I hear AOC is also going on a 15-city tour to promote her New Green Deal. I will assume the little snit is traveling by electric car to each destination.

      44 | February 14, 2019 12:42 pm

      @ The Barbarian:

the comments I’m reading are mostly positive about Amazon not coming. Naive but positive, e.g., “now we have the money to fix the subway and school system”.

Apparently, there are a lot of people who think it was going to be a net financial loss for NYC. No, I cannot explain it.

As for the guy who’s talking about running against her – I thought it was the #walkaway guy (don’t remember his name either) – but whatever.

The tweet AOC sent out about the tour said – 15 city, 50 state tour. I assume it’s going to be via bicycles and where they intend to hit in 35 states with no cities – solar powered tents in the forests. With the elves.

    45. 45 | February 14, 2019 1:03 pm

      @ eaglesoars:

Oh dear God – did she REALLY say 15 City, 50 States? Jeebus.

Yeah, I saw that the idiots who don’t really understand how this works were saying how great it is that Amazon wasn’t going to build because you know, unemployment is low, etc. and they were getting a tax break and only the landlords were happy they’d be coming. Okay. Have it your way. I’m pretty damn sure there’s some high school graduates that aren’t going to college that could have used an entry level job at Amazon but whateves!

Yes, the #Walkaway guy is the one I’m thinking of. I thought that was the same as Blexit, which I know is Candace Owens. So it’s two different organizations telling Blacks to tell the Democrats to take a hike? Sweet.

I’m going to probably stay away from Twitter today. Sadly, it’s the first anniversary of the Parkland shooting and it will no doubt be infested with liberals invading conservative feeds to tell all of the NRA members and Second Amendment supporters how we support mass shooting of children, have blood on our hands, don’t care about gun violence, etc.

avocado oil. For some reason, the grocery stores here aren’t big on it. The one I’ve been using sources to 3 different countries and $$$. Looked on amazon, found one I liked but it was $$$ too. Then I read the reviews and they all said Costco has it for half the price. Checked Walmart. Yep. Ordered online and picked it up at the store. A lot of the basics are just cheaper, coffee, mayo, etc. It adds up and the store is 2 miles from my house.

So I hear Trump is going to sign this garbage bill and then declare a nat’l emergency. I think he needs to address the nation and explain why he’s doing it this way. If, of course, that’s what he does.

    51. 51 | February 14, 2019 4:47 pm

      @ eaglesoars:

Personally, I think Trump has played the Democrats for all they’re worth on this. He wanted $5 Billion and change for a Wall, and was willing to shut down (hah!) the government to get it. In the process, he’s forced the Democrats to go completely on the record as opposing any money for a Border Wall, essentially saying there is no real problem with illegals and caravans running over our borders, not seeing human trafficking and drugs as a problem to be dealt with.

He reopens the government, gives the State of the Union of his life, has a 72% national approval for his plans, and then goes back to the negotiating table. Democrats do no real negotiation in good faith, proving once again that they are liars. Meanwhile, his folks have been busy looking for monies that can be moved, allocated and otherwise used to fund that border wall. The cherry on top? William Barr has just been confirmed as Attorney General, which means he can give the $14 billion in criminal forfeiture funds coming our way from El Chapo directly to DHS, if my understanding of how the funds can be dispersed is correct.

Meanwhile, every single Presidential candidate from the Democrats is now going to have to run AGAINST a Border Wall and security. And now he can go on television and declare a national emergency, slam the Democrats for refusal to see the crisis and kick their asses.

I can’t wait for the rebuttal. Maybe they can let that bigoted Congresswoman from Minnesota to deliver it – you know, the one that married her brother and committed immigration fraud.

      https://www.breitbart.com/economy/2019/02/14/hill-leaders-try-to-rush-1159-page-spending-bill-through-congress-in-18-hours/

In an unusual move, neither Democrats nor Republicans will hold a full briefing for their members on the contents of the roughly 1,100 page spending bill.

Lawmakers will vote on the text less than 24 hours after it was released, forcing Democrats to waive their 72-hour rule, in an attempt to clear the bill by Friday’s deadline.

By lunchtime on Thursday, staffers and activists had found two poison pills in the homeland security section which were left out of the bill summary released by Democratic Rep. Nita Lowey.

One poison pill would allow Democratic legislators in Texas border towns to block the construction of the 55 miles of border walls approved in the legislation.

A second poison pill would allow illegal migrants in the United State to get a legal shield against deportation by declaring their willingness to “sponsor” a teenager or child trafficked from Central America. Many the so-called “Unaccompanied Alien Children” who are being smuggled up to the United States by the cartels are the children or relatives of illegals who have already sneaked into the U.S.

The legislators who support the poison pills describe the pro-migration clauses as “Easter eggs.”

What he is really saying is, “I got mine, nobody else should be able to do so in the future”.

That’a a pretty typical attitude of new-rich people. They don’t want others to ascend to their level and are perfectly happy virtue-signaling to get policies in place to make it harder for the next person to make a fortune from an idea.

But I think there is some untoward concern about setting a precedent for declaring a national emergency. First of all, why does anybody think Dems would worry about precedent if they wanted to do it? They don’t give a rat’s ass, if they want to do it they will. As for doing it over guns – that’s fine if you want a shooting civil war. Why anybody is still under any illusions that they are bound by any rules but the ones they make up is beyond me.

Peterson helps think through centuries of moral and intellectual changing movements He can better understand the current cycle he has to work within to get what he wants. We may already be at peak socialism and moving back to self reliance.

It’s just frustrating. With my sons disability school is already a pain for him (not to mention his absolute lack of motivation) to find out that he know has to deal with a lunatic who wants to brainwash her students pisses me off to maximum levels.

Oh, I already told this part to Eagle, the moron calls her class US Herstory, even though the word history has NOTHING to do with gender. How the hell does someone with this room temperature IQ wind up here in MT teaching. I thought we still had some semblance of sanity since this is the worst one I’ve run into (it’s his junior year). I’ve run into a couple others but they at least pretended there was another side to their liberalism. This one is just flat out insane.

Yeah, the shared custody part has its own problems. Right now I’m fighting my ex. She wants to pull both kids off of their meds even though it has been repeatedly demonstrated that their grades perform better on them. She unfortunately has control of their social security numbers (the one thing I couldn’t get the court to force her to turn over) so I can’t apply for the childs health insurance program for them.

Right now my son is failing all but two of his course, while taking a credit makeup class for all the classes he failed last year and the year before. I’m at the end of my rope in general right now. I really don’t need my ex’s brand of crazy at the same time I’m dealing with a lunatic teacher.

He’s in supplementary services and still finding a way to fail. He has an active IEP, all kinds of exceptions in place, a class that is supposed to help him be more organized and able to do his homework. And still it’s impossible to keep him going the way he’s supposed to.

A good example is this week. I have him doing his daily geometry homework and following up with two incomplete geometry assignments, plus any other work due the next day. It’s working great. Tomorrow when he returns to his mother, all of that work will be shot to hell and I will have to find a way to make up for two weeks worth of missed work when he gets back to me.

Electronics sounds very promising. Is there a more vocational stream available in his school. The reading is promising too. Reading and electronics are engaging the mind and learning. At the same time, they do not require the high level of social skills where you are engaged in classroom debate and/or having to wade through a bs indoctrination of anti-human attitudes. Can you get into a trade school stream? No wonder he is unmotivated. He’s attracted to logical skill sets. It requires digging through a false set of conclusions not correlated to experience. It must be not only unrewarding, but punishing to deal with close minded narrow interpretations of reality. That your son can deal with the abstractions of geometry is a great sign. However, he seems to need (as most of us do) a certain amount of consistent building blocks to retain the knowledge. Almost everything you mention shows that the problem is the educational emphasis which does not take advantage of his strengths. Can you get a different stream for him? You need to take the focus off the crazy history teacher I believe. She’s a painful sidetrack to a better general approach. I have ZERO idea of how your schools work, but you must have recommendations from previous testing, no? Are they being implemented? If they are not, then why not? Taking a different perspective might be helpful for you and your son.
This is not psychological or educational advice. Age and experience mostly, and I’m like really old.

AOC has pissed of the entire Dem party of NY with her Amazon bullshit. She’s gonna get an edukashun Boston U never offered.

Simply put, the loss of Amazon HQ is a huge loss for the city of New York. Its progressive mayor and governor agree with this. Most of its Democratic members of congress agree. Ocasio-Cortez has put herself on an island on an issue she thought was already a done deal. Now it’s a deal that is undone. As the new darling of the Democrats she may be untouchable, but she may not be. She isn’t just ruffling feathers, now. She is undermining New York City Democrats’ agendas. Don’t be surprised if an opponent decides to pounce.

how long should it take for the lawyers to get this filed?

I believe he was asking FIRST for a public apology from every individual who slandered these kids. This includes Alyssa Milano, Kathy Griffin, Jim Carrey (who painted a demented picture of them and called them “Baby Snakes”). Additionally, he is going after news outlets AND members of Congress who denounced the kids (assuming while they were not on the floor of their respective houses; i.e., in Twitter, Facebook, etc.). Some, like that brother-marrying human stain, have doubled down.

He’s got at least a year to file, so my guess is they are carefully accumulating the exhibits of the defamation and slander, crafting the argument of slander, libel and malice necessary. There is no Sullivan protections here. These kids were not public figures and the higher bar for “malice” is not going to apply; they became “public figures” only AFTER the bad acts.

If I had to hazard a guess, the complaint will be filed within the next two months. Because of diversity jurisdiction, I am hoping they can file in the District of Kentucky instead of, say, the Central District of California or the Southern District of New York (district of residence of many of the defendants). Defendants will no doubt probably file a joint 12(b)(6) motion to dismiss. If it is NOT granted, they will probably immediately attempt to settle. And as part of the settlement, I would force them to post a video publicly apologizing for their remarks.

And no, your Congress critters, the taxpayers should NOT be on the hook for your legal fees and any judgment. And that should be monitored!

But I did wonder if Krapperdick would have tried to get himself a slot in the league, if only to show NFL teams that he still had mad skillz.

$20 million? Holy cow – was that jackass kidding? $20 million is probably the combined total of the salaries they’re paying all of these also-rans for the season. The only reason Ratner says that was the most economically ignorant statement he’s ever read is because he hadn’t read this. AOC’s analysis of the Amazon deal.

More like, “I’d like to order 25 pizzas. I made up this $300-off coupon + demand you take it, and if you want to talk about it at all I’ll leave.”

Queens: Where did this coupon come from? $300 is too much. Who gave this to you? This is weird.

Them: I TOLD YOU $300 OFF 25 PIZZAS

      Oh.

A senior counter-intel guy in Brussel’s security svc has been arrested for spying for Russia.

In a further blow, Clement Vandenborre, the head of counterintelligence in Giss, has been removed from office pending an investigation into allegations he illegally destroyed documents.

Looks like Krapperdick and Reid have settled their collusion lawsuits with the NFL:

      https://www.weaselzippers.us/411109-social-justice-warrior-colin-kaepernick-and-nfl-settle-collusion-case/

Word is Krap got $60 million, don’t know what Reid got but he’s already been signed with the Panthers so why he should have been allowed to continue this “collusion” nonsense is beyond me.

Well, I was pretty much ready to give the NFL a second chance. They had essentially stopped this kneeling nonsense, if only because the networks had refused to show it anymore. Sit your ass down all you want, no camera time for you.

But to pay this dick after he WALKED AWAY from his contract of his own free will, only to find that he was not the commodity he thought he was, sets a very very VERY bad precedent. Now, if a player believes he’s about to be cut, all he’ll need do is make some out the mainstream comments, walk away rather than be cut, and claim that the league is out to get him.

Which is precisely what Krap did. He knew he was being benched as a starter in the start of the 2015 season and did this whole SJW bit partially as a way to blame politics for his demotion. Well, the 49ers still benched him and when he wanted his release, they were happy to see him go. Other teams gave him a tryout and no one really thought he fit their offense. He isn’t OWED a job in the NFL and I still don’t think even if the owners DID decide among themselves not to hire him, they did nothing wrong in doing so. When Michael Vick was released from prison, if all the NFL owners had agreed he had no place in the league, would THAT have been collusion? I don’t think so. I notice that while players were constantly saying Krap should be given a job in the NFL, NONE of them said it should be with THEIR team.

He still thinks he’s worth $20 million a year, as he told the fledgling football alliance when they offered him a job.

Ocasio-Cortez Plans Bill To Block Trump’s National Emergency Declaration

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she and a fellow Democrat will introduce a bill to block President Trump’s expected declaration of a national emergency to secure money for his long-promised border wall.

“@JoaquinCastrotx and I aren’t going to let the President declare a fake national emergency without a fight,” the Bronx/Queens Democrat tweeted Friday.

To major in econ you HAVE TO TAKE MATH CLASSES including some mind bending stats courses and a couple calculus courses…no way in hell AOC could muster that.

The graduate level stuff is even more mind bending. Believe me.

AOC has a very unevolved brain.

There would have been thousands of new jobs and they would pay taxes.

Reminds me of when she pushed the bogus claim that DOD had somehow “lost” some absurd amount of money, and that it could have been used to pay for some social program she wanted, instead.

How do you use money that’s been “lost” to pay for something?

He probably is. If you look at his Nike contract. I wonder what that’s worth. $20 mil? If he goes back to playing, for say $8 mil, and sucks like he did before, he loses all that cachet, he’s just another wannabe.

So, yeah, he just might be worth $20 mil

CNN is beyond ignorant of the whole flow of the Russia hoax. Even I remembered this and my memory isn’t worth the powder to blow it to hell

      And wiki just OWNED CNN.

      ————–

In the filing, former Trump campaign manager Roger Stone is alleged to have communicated with “Organization 1,” aka Wikileaks, which implies that Stone somehow coordinated with Wikileaks to release of the Democratic National Committee’s hacked emails.

Seizing the opportunity to create fake news, CNN jumped on the filing, claiming that Stone’s “communications with Wikileaks” were in Mueller’s “possession”:

      ————–

      smackdown incoming

The communications are the @WikiLeaks account telling Roger Stone to stop going around falsely claiming that he was in contact with Assange. They were provided to Congress and the public over a year ago. There can be little excuse for concealing the true context. pic.twitter.com/gAzOMtgzZg
