A more encompassing unemployment rate that counts discouraged workers as well as those holding jobs part-time for economic reasons, often called the “real” unemployment rate, plunged to 7.3 percent in February from 8.1 percent in January. Those employed part-time for economic reasons tumbled by 837,000 to 4.3 million while those completing temporary jobs fell by 225,000, which a Labor Department office said was a consequence of the government shutdown that ended in late February.
Among major worker groups, the jobless rate for Hispanics also declined sharply to 4.3 percent from 4.9 percent in January. The rate for African-Americans rose two-tenths of a point to 7 percent, while the level for whites declined to 3.3 percent from 3.5 percent.
There was other good news in the report: Average hourly earnings increased by 3.4 percent on a year-over-year basis, easily the best of the economic recovery that began nearly 10 years ago. That compares to a 1.5 percent increase in the consumer price index for all urban consumers from January 2018 to January 2019. Economists had been expecting an increase of 3.2 percent.

AAnnndd…in Iditarod news. My dog, Talese, was dropped from the race last night. We don’t yet know why but he’s in the capable hands of the ‘dropped dog Mom’ LindaJ. Talese is the 3rd dog Blair has dropped so far, so she’s running with 11 dogs. Also she broke her sled somehow, but had pre-dropped a spare at one of the checkpoints, fortunately.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer caused a kerfuffle Thursday by parking his official truck on the sidewalk in front of a public school — then crossing the street to get lunch with another officer in the predominantly Dominican neighborhood of Washington Heights.
The first officer left his marked immigration enforcement vehicle on the sidewalk directly in front of the Castle Bridge School with a dog inside, while another officer parked his marked vehicle on a street adjacent to the school and left it running, school staffers and parents said.
The two officers then decamped for a burger and a chicken pot pie, respectively, at Coogan’s pub across the street from the school

Meanwhile, Mexican immigrant Juan Martinez, who operates a candy stall on the corner where the two parked, fled on foot at the sight of them, fearing a raid. Another undocumented vendor on the same block in the largely immigrant neighborhood did the same, he said.

The incident caught the attention of Washington Heights City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez,
“This is totally unacceptable. They should be out. Abolish ICE,” Rodriguez wrote on Twitter.

This is great. On my Iditarod thread a lot of people refer to specific dogs on the team as their ‘spirit animal’ or some such. They got taken to task by an SJW for appropriating part of the indigenous culture because spirit animals don’t belong to white people culture and it’s very hurtful.

I’m off to bed. One more Iditarod story. somehow, one person posted a link to something called DonorsChoose.org. It’s a non-profit where public school teachers can post requests for money for special supplies or school trips or something like that. and the link showed the schools in Alaska.
These are tiny, tiny, rural schools – if you can even call them that – sometimes with 12 students. They scrape for everything.
Long story short. #uglydogs, Blair Braverman’s ‘crew’, raised $26K today for these kids. We pretty much funded half the K-5 education system in Alaska. The teachers are gobsmacked, the kids can’t BELIEVE they’re really going on these field trips, etc.
And not ONE request for books was left unfunded. Last I checked, they’ve got every book they asked for. All of them. One class asked to replace 2 Chromebooks that were damaged. They got them. One teacher asked for funds to feed the kids with lunches over spring break. They’ve been fed for the school year.
It’s been a good day.
