Steve Blass Gets the “Woke” Treatment

Pirates announcer Steve Blass criticized for comments about Braves’ Ronald Acuna Jr.

Broadcaster Steve Blass came under fire Wednesday for on-air comments he made during Tuesday night’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves.

In the fourth inning, Pirates pitcher Steven Brault hit Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. in the elbow with a 2-2 pitch. Blass made note of Acuna’s animated style of play and necklaces he wears while on the field.

“A young player, just doing all that stuff, and all the jewelry, and all the stuff, back in the day, I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but …” Blass said.

Broadcast partner Greg Brown asked Blass if he was suggesting Brault hit Acuna on purpose.

“I’m not suggesting that,” Blass said. “That’s why I qualified it back in the day.”

When the broadcast showed a replay of Acuna briefly glaring at Brault after being hit by the pitch, Blass bristled.

“Give it a rest. You think he’s trying to throw at you? Give me a break,” Blass said.

Several websites criticized Blass’ comments as anti-fun and went as far as accusing him of racism. Acuna is from Venezuela.

Awful Announcing referred to his comments as “dog-whistling.”

“Steve Blass doesn’t like a certain type of player. You can call them ‘flashy’ I guess, but there might be something else going on with the Pittsburgh Pirates announcer,” Ryan Phillips wrote in The Big Lead.

Blass, 77, is in his final season as a Pirates broadcaster. He was not expected to comment on the matter, on or off the air.

Nice post. It highlights that we live in the Era of the Perpetually Offended. aka Censorship of language and thought. The fact is that speech and thought are completely intertwined. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, you have to have a thought in your brain before you can talk about it.

Mexico’s problem is the cartels and they have infiltrated the gov’t like a cancer. You can’t kill them w/o killing the host. Unless they are incentivized to change their behavior, they won’t.

They only way to do that is to send in the 82nd Airborne and they’re busy at the moment.

Trump is thinking about a currency play? I’m not sure how much of this is serious concern vs. how much is whining because they’ve got long positions on the dollar

President Donald Trump is poised to turn the $5.1 trillion-a-day global currency market into the next battlefield in his trade war with a proposal that has set two U.S. government agencies on a collision course.

A Commerce Department proposal to impose countervailing tariffs on countries that it determines have devalued their currencies has alarmed officials at the Treasury Department, according to four people familiar with the matter. They are wary of market disruptions and a politicization of foreign-exchange policy, among other concerns, the people said.

This is what we do NOT want to see. This is the kind of thing that sends the rural population into the cities looking for food and work, and then you get civil unrest and then the gov’t goes looking for something to distract people with and it’s usually not strippers and booze.

    China

Chinese mainland pig farmers told him African Swine Fever has spread to 30 percent of mainland pigs, while another Hong Kong pig farmer based in China told Yip the exposure rate is as high as 50 percent….U.S. Customs and Border Protection, partnering with the Department of Agriculture, confiscated 1 million pounds of Chinese pork smuggled into a port in New Jersey in March…The Fall Armyworm has spread to 220,000 acres (89,000 hectares) in Southern China, ruining primarily corn and some sugarcane crops. With no natural predators in China, the USDA warned that “there is a high probability that the pest will spread across all of China’s grain production area within the next 12 months.”…The Chinese government recently confirmed another episode of A(H5N6) bird flu in China’s Xinjiang Province. The outbreak killed only 1,015 of 2,545 birds in the area, but an additional 11,900 will be culled to prevent the disease’s spread

The gov’t is going to have to subsidize to keep prices affordable, the population isn’t going to be able to afford much increase caused by decreased supply

    @ right_wing2:

very. I’d never heard of them before and just a quick research seems to show they popped up in significant numbers out of nowhere about 3 yrs ago.

If that’s true, something changed in the ecology/environment to make them so prolific. OR, they somehow got transported to a more nurturing environment where the population boomed and migrated from there. They have a very short life span, so it wouldn’t need be anything long term, more like a storm maybe.

the nursing shortage is critical. it’s really bad, more are retiring than are passing the boards. the programs have about a 50% washout rate.

truckers will be replaced with robots soon enough, but the need is critical too.

They also always dramatically overestimate the electricity production of solar (and wind for that matter). We have solar and wind farms here in MT, they are huge and mostly manage to power large-scale farms and sprinkler systems.

    BOOM!

VERDICT: Jury awards Gibson’s Bakery $11 million against Oberlin College

The verdict sends a strong message that colleges and universities cannot simply wind up and set loose student social justice warriors and then wash their hands of the consequences. In this case, a wholly innocent 5th-generation bakery was falsely accused of being racist and having a history racial profiling after stopping three black Oberlin College students from shoplifting. The students eventually pleaded guilty, but not before large protests and boycotts intended to destroy the bakery and defame the owners. The jury appears to have accepted that Oberlin College facilitated the wrongful conduct against the bakery.

Punitive damage phase to start next Tuesday, which could increase the damages to $33 million.

    ok, back to Chernobyl.

Maj. Gen. Nikolai Tarakanov who headed up the liquidation efforts, talks about the movie

    https://www.rt.com/news/461348-chernobyl-disaster-tarakanov-hbo/

RTD:This series portrays then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev as a confused man, who is doubting the reality and hesitating to take control. Is that true? Is that how it was and did he really fail to assume responsibility for the incident?

Tarakanov: What I can tell you is that if we speak about the man’s character, since I knew him quite well… he did lack that firm grip on things that, for example, Boris Yeltsin had, the kind that majors and generals have, who can take the lead; issue orders and know what to do, that kind of stuff.

So, when he got the news he didn’t even go there himself, he sent [Nikolai] Ryzhkov [chairman of the Council of Ministers] and Shcherbina to take care of things. And not knowing what’s happening on the ground; not having the slightest idea of what it’s like, he was trying to low-ball the whole thing about the danger to the population and the impact. He was hoping that the commission would report any day that it was all over and fine.

So the official narrative carefully avoided calling the incident a disaster – which it really was. It was us, the military, who insisted that it should be acknowledged as a disaster. It was one of the century’s biggest man-made disasters.

More developments in the Gallagher war crimes/murder case. The judge is giving it to the prosecution in the nads.

news coverage of the case that included excerpts of the court’s rulings constituted “apparent unlawful command influence.”

Unlawful command influence occurs when a military commander uses their authority to influence the outcome of a military legal proceeding.

As remedies, Rugh ruled that if Gallagher is convicted of the charges, he will not have to face life without parole.

Also, Rugh gave the defense additional rights to challenge potential jurors. Rugh gave the defense two more “peremptory challenges” than the one they would normally have.
