It was a great year.

This is an Open:

College ball:

4/4 on Saturday! 36/65…1600/1000 this far.

The VOLS made a bowl game!!!

JAN 1st:

#18 Minnesota v #12 Auburn 1:00 P… The Outback Bowl, ‘casue we all all love Bloomin’ Onions! Auburn is a 7 point favorite and cover.

#14 Michigan v #13 Alabama 1:00 PM…The Citrus Bowl… ‘Bama is a 7 point favorite and M has to win this, the Blue faithful will start to doubt Coach Harbaugh. He hasn’t beaten OSU and has under-performed. Tua is out for ‘Bama. Saban has to motivate the guys who thought that they would be national champions. I think M can cover.

#6 Oregon v #8 Wisconsin 5:00 PM…The Grandaddy of them ALL, The Rose bowl. The Ducks are 3 point favorites. Nope. W beats this spread.

#5 Georgia v #7 Baylor – Allstate Sugar Bowl – Wed, Jan 1, 8:45 PM ET…The Bulldogs are 5 point favorites and beat this spread.

New Year’s eve. Just 12 1/2 hurts of 2019 left to go.

Heraded off to Oz tomorrow at ‘sparrow fart’ for a week of 35-40C temperatutes in Melbourne in the ‘Peoples Socialist Republik’ of Victoria. SPIT

    🙂
Alas too late to even see the ashes of the Kiwi’s Boxing Day Test crocket that finished early in a total rout.

It’ll be interesting to see the next test in Sydney at week’s end at the SCG (Sydney Cricket Ground). …. on TV.

“ONCE IN A LIFETIME” STRATOSPHERIC CLOUDS: A spectacular outbreak of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) is underway around the Arctic Circle. “This is a once in a lifetime event,” says Chad Blakley, who runs the Lights over Lapland aurora tour service in Abisko, Sweden. “No question, this is the best that any of us have ever seen.” Tour guide Paige Ellis took this video showing the clouds’ aurora-like colors on Dec. 29th:

The East Room of the WH isn’t corporate office space, doofus

As president, I’ll turn the East Room into an open office plan, where I’ll sit with our team.

I’ll use the Oval Office for some official functions – never for tweeting – but the rest of the time, I’ll be where a leader should be: with the team. http://politi.co/2tbPhLl

Of course, the reason Trump has to use Twitter is that it’s the only way he can get his message out without someone in the media explaining what he “really” meant to the audience.

Bloomberg wouldn’t have that problem, given that he owns a wire service.

Stratospheric cloud PLUS ‘sun dogs’ aplenty. I have ex army mates on holiday right now on a Lapland holiday looking to see the Aurora Boriallis . Lucky bastards. I miss the auroras over Canada flying between LAX and London via Greenland.

We used to invite passengers up to see the Northern lights from the big windows ‘up front’ . Few even bothered to take the opportunity. Most had their heads buried in their screens. People have lost their souls to bloody electronics.

It’s a pretty cool gadget, especially with the side burner. I can cook anything on it that I could with the gas grill, and a whole lot more. And it holds its temperature amazingly well. It was about 21 degrees outside when I started that chuck roast this morning (high was about 31). It stayed within 5 degrees either way all day long.

    Trouble in River City.

The U.S. embassy in Baghdad is under attack. Shiite militia have breached the walls once and been ousted by security forces.

The embassy has NOT been evac’d, our people are still in there.

    @ eaglesoars:

The embassy compound in Baghdad is not what you would typically think of as an embassy. It’s a huge facility:

The Embassy of the United States of America in Baghdad is the diplomatic mission of United States of America in the Republic of Iraq. Ambassador Matthew Tueller is currently the Chief of Mission.[1]

At 104 acres (42 ha), it is the largest and most expensive embassy in the world, and is nearly as large as Vatican City.[2] The embassy complex is about five times the size of the U.S. Embassy in Yerevan, which is the second largest U.S. diplomatic mission abroad, and over ten times the size of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, which is the third largest U.S. diplomatic mission abroad.[3]

The embassy opened in January 2009 following a series of construction delays. It replaced the previous embassy, which opened July 1, 2004 in Baghdad’s Green Zone in a former Palace of Saddam Hussein.[4] The embassy complex cost $750 million to build and reached a peak staffing of 16,000 employees and contractors in 2012.

The embassy has extensive housing and infrastructure facilities in addition to the usual diplomatic buildings. The buildings include:[10]

    Six apartment buildings for employees
    Water and waste treatment facilities
    A power station
    Two “major diplomatic office buildings”
Recreation, including a gym, cinema, several tennis courts and an Olympic-size swimming pool

The complex is heavily fortified, even by the standards of the Green Zone. The details are largely secret, but it is likely to include a significant US Marine Security Guard detachment. Fortifications include deep security perimeters, buildings reinforced beyond the usual standard, and five highly guarded entrances.

I know. Some of my adopted soldiers sent me pictures and I’m sure it’s bigger now than it was then. And some of it I gather they weren’t allowed to photograph. IIRC, even approaching it is a security hassle, so I’m not clear on how this breach happened.

Ben Rhodes Attack Trump Policy On Iran As U.S. Embassy Is Under Attack

    Ben Rhodes

Trump sanctions on Iran have done nothing to change Iranian behavior except make it worse. This is what happens when your foreign policy is based on Obama envy, domestic politics, Saudi interests, and magical right wing thinking. https://twitter.com/amichaistein1/status/1211731826890412033

What the @#$% is that even supposed to mean? Trump envies Obama giving pallets of cash to Iran. Saudi interests? No, that’s what the Bushes and Clintons put first and foremost. “Magical right wing thinking”? No idea what you are trying to say there Benji old boy, but the only “right wing” thinking that goes with this is that if you are going to go to war, you go in to win and you don’t hobble the military.

    GOOD!

I’m so sick of these morally pompous scolds telling us everything they want to take from us is for the children

Climate Friendly Lithium Battery Horror: Lawsuit Accuses Alphabet, Apple, Dell and Tesla of Complicity in Child Exploitation

Updated Google-parent Alphabet, Apple, Dell, Microsoft, and Tesla have been accused of “knowingly benefiting from and aiding and abetting the cruel and brutal use of young children in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to mine cobalt,” a key component of the lithium-ion batteries that these companies obtain from suppliers like Glencore, Umicore, and Huayou Cobalt to power their products.

On Sunday, International Rights Advocates, aka IRAdvocates, a Washington, DC-based human-rights advocacy group, filed a complaint [PDF] on behalf of 13 unnamed plaintiffs, each either a minor miner injured in DRC cobalt operations or a relative of a child killed or maimed in a mining-related accident. They’re unnamed not because they’re unknown, the complaint says, but because their lives are at risk for challenging powerful businesses and DRC government officials who benefit from the status quo.

And regardless of how many great ideas Elon Musk seems to have (and he does, Space X is not nothing) – I’ve been yelling about this for a long time. You don’t use children for this.

    *ahem*

The 14th Air Force, at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, has been renamed. It will now live long and prosper as Space Operations Command, or SPOC, according to a recent service announcement.

This is a fun article on the space missions due for 2020. For me, the neatest one is US Air Force’s X-37B space plane

The U.S. Air Force is expected to, sometime in 2020, once again launch the mysterious X-37B space plane (also known as the Orbital Test Vehicle).

This will be the sixth mission of the uncrewed vehicle, which can stay in space for up to a year at a time to perform its secret work. In 2019, one of Air Force’s two known X-37 spacecraft returned to Earth after a record-breaking 780-day spaceflight. That’s more than two years in space.

The Air Force usually discusses only the overall goals of the program, because it classifies each payload: “Reusable spacecraft technologies for America’s future in space and operating experiments which can be returned to, and examined, on Earth,” states an X-37B fact sheet produced by the Air Force.

Virginia gun store says firearms, ammunition, and magazines flying off the shelves. Upswing on buying by cash

“This is the largest Christmas and November, December that we’ve had, basically, since Trump has come on board. The only other person that was a better salesman right now is when we had President Obama,” said Jerry Rapp, owner of SpecDive Tactical, in Alexandria, comparing the administrations of President Trump and his White House predecessor, Barack Obama.

    @ lobo91:

At about 2:30 there is an inset with a Bloomberg quote: “If you want to have a gun in your home, I think your pretty stupid”. I almost agree with that, why would anyone want to just have a gun. You don’t want just one gun, you want a firearm for multiple purposes.

Bloomberg should be forced to live without his armed security detail.
