So let me get this straight. He needed more witnesses. Didn’t get more witnesses. So the case is proved? HUH?

He wanted to be the center of attention today. And he is. At least as far as the MSM is concerned. Meanwhile, he’s probably got Bloomberg on the phone, begging him to name him as his running mate. Because God knows he won’t be able to show his face in Utah again.

Romney does not speak for the LDS church. Just like the current pope does not represent the catholics. Romney speaks for a select group of holier than thou left leaning self-serving asswipes that speak louder than everyone around them and try to make themselves the center of all attention. This is the end result of his temper tantrum revenge against us great unwashed for not seeing his brilliance and electing him to the office that he felt he so greatly deserved.

He can go serve his time in the wilderness now. He won’t be missed.

Kirk Douglas has died. At 103 glorious years of age. As I recall, he was the son of Russian, Jewish, rag pickers.

The next time you read some drek (that’s yiddish, btw) about how women are somehow demeaned by being sex symbols, let me remind you that there wasn’t – isn’t – a sane woman on the planet – who didn’t view, love and adore him for being just that.

RIP Kirk. You made American culture enormously richer for your talent.

Raton and Trinidad, CO (stay away from the Wendys, it’s disgusting) are terrible places to get gas. Bernallillo and then the next stop is Pueblo for us. Used to be Las Vegas (NM, not NV) when we didn’t have as much range as the big tank Tundra has.

Raton is the train station that serves Scout Disneyworld — I mean, Philmont. The last time I went through there I got the impression that businesses close to the station pander to the Scout traffic, or, take advantage of the Scouts. I guess she could do some copy writing for an ad agency ..but1

Unless she wants to go into business herself then …… A business minor is worth squat really. These days even a MBA is not worth the paper it’s written on unless one already has extensive experience and is now collecting paper to justify his or her climb up a corporate ladder.

Tell her to go do IT with an IT security major. Better still go into the military (INTIL with IT) and get a masters in IT Security. Then you have something really valuable to sell on Main Street.

I don’t talk about it much, but I raised my step-daughter. She got her degree at Univ Maryland in education. Went into teaching. She’s 49-50 yrs old now.

The way kids grow up now, I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect them to know what they want to ‘be’ when they are 18. And there’s every chance once she gets there that she’ll find a major to change to, happens all the time.

But I remember when she came here, she was what? 11 years old? And her name was’reader girl’? Because that was what she did, she was a voracious reader. As an English major, she could find out history, and become another Mary Beard of archaeology. She could write medieval mysteries. Listen, one of the most beloved teachers of my life was Mrs. Dvorzhak. She taught me how to REALLY ‘hear’ Shakespeare and read Beowolf, Chaucer, etc. I didn’t know it at the time, but over the years as I’ve encountered people who find that writing impenetrable, as I skip into it lightly with confidence, and realize their loss, I am ever thankful for that woman.

Of course that was 8th grade.

So a solid ground in English at the college level could be a really great thing. If she starts with the Susan Sontag crap, tho, let us know, we’ll burn the place to the fucking ground.

I couldn’t agree more on this. I cannot TELL you the number of lawyers I know that went through college and law school, at great expense, only to get in the real world of “The Law” and discover they really, really HATED it. Also in many cases to find out that they were in actuality no good at it.

I remember you telling me I’d be a good lawyer. I’ve had lawyer friends who thought the same thing – gave me the LSAT prep book but I simply could not ‘get’ the language. But then I look at Sidney Powell…I wish I could do that.

I was blessed to find my niche. Software development. Those languages came to me like silk and I flew like – well – an eagle.

  39. 42 | February 6, 2020 10:14 am

    @ eaglesoars:

I’ve never thought the LSAT was an accurate indication of anything. One of the finest lawyers I ever worked with told me he just barely made the LSAT cut-off for Michigan Law. But he could craft an argument in a motion that others deemed a hopeless endeavor but which the judge granted in the end. That’s where you shine. What Dersh would call assimilation of the facts and the making of a cogent argument based on same.

So Mitt got what he wanted in the end. He was praised and exalted by the lamestream media and Hollywood and gave the left fodder against the President. I hope the Senate DOES start an investigation into this whole Ukraine business and we learn how Pierre Defecto has associates that are up to their necks in it.

Wouldn’t you love to see a whistleblower with third-hand information bring this to the attention of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Democrats starting to scream “not credible!”

And you have to swim in the language like a fish in water. I read the Scalia book you recommended to me. There is a mindset there that I hear but cannot – ever – write. Scalia loved the law, and had an instinct for the word. I don’t.

I assure you that watching really interesting archaeology on TV and actually DOING archaeology are two entirely different things. Daughter began undergraduate archaeology at Auckland U but it was amateur hour Pacifica stuff. Moved in year 2 to Sydney U where they really teach archaeology. Then she got a 1/3 scholarship to study in Uni of Bristol right in the centre of Roman Britain, Stone hedge / Wood hedge and paleo-archaeology at Chedder gorge. Fantastic experience but she had to begin from day 1 because the whole Brit teaching method was VERY different. One READS archaeology with the help of a supervisor with the exam all at once at the end of 3 years of study. She got an Honours and went on the do a Masters in Forensic Archaeology because there were NO JOBS in archaeology for folks unless they had a minimum masters and preferable a doctorate.

No jobs at all in the UK either for Masters grads even ones with an excellence allocade from Bournemouth U, who specialist in forensics for Europe. At that stage with $100k of debt offset by her working as well as studying and living on the smell of an oily rag for 5 years, she kicked it into touch.

Her lecturers at Bristol U used undergrads as unpaid labour and even charged them for the privilege of digging, whilst pulling in six figure bonuses from the Brit TV channels for shows about archaeology.

She saved up and did an Post Grad at LAMDA one of the two great theatre and film schools in Britain and again had to go into debt and live hand to mouth for years. Did some interesting gigs in London as a producer, actor and writer. Yet again it was hand to mouth stuff. Only the o.001% ever get to be multi millionaires acting. Came back to NZ after a decade in the UK broke. Well educated but still broke. Did a post grad diploma in teaching and taught for a few years on starvation pay whilst paying off her educational debt. Bought and did up 4 houses financed by the ‘bank of dad’ to increase her equity through sweat labour. She nows has equity to afford a reasonable home. Still figures she needs to ‘do another 2 house do-ups to be able to afford a decent home outright. Still doing some writing and screen plays with her brother who did an English Major and copy-writing marketing as a minor.

Forget archaeology unless you can afford to live independently with age of capital. You’ll also need a doctorate and have ‘friends’ in the media industry. Forget museums too as even staff with doctorates in archaeology are paid rubbish salaries.

    Hope that helps.

    🙂

LIke you I had some great teachers, at a catholic school Marcellin College Randwick. Brother Xavier for 2 years in grades 6 and 7 leading up to the State Primary Finals. He and the book First Aide in English made the class all 72 of us love reading and debating. Even grammar was fun and that’s saying something. He ruled with an iron fist but we al loved him because he KNEW how to entertain is with his teaching.Out of our class of 72 our class students came first and second in the open State exam for 12 year olds with 15 of the class of 72, all within the top 100 students in the State of 5 million! I never got better than 28th in class except for a mid term test when everyone else was coasting. I studied my arse off and go 13th in class. Hell the fifth on class and my best mate Brian Lederer ended up the Professor of Theoretical Physics ar Sydney University and never could crack the top 4 places.
    🙂

Then a great teacher Brother Stanisclause for Grades 8-12 in ancient history. He’d studied and worked on a LOT of Greek and Roman digs in Europe as a young man and loved his subject. We also loved it as passionately. He made it fun pacing up and down waving a cane like a sword whilst reading from a text.

She loved it too and was VERY good at it. She was from the Ozarks and is married to a youngster that I’ve known since he was 11. He’s now a US Army LTC based in Japan. 🙂

His wife talked r-e-a-l s-l-o-w but thought real fast! She’s currently working in the NSA complete with a double doctorate. Returing as a Major about now and joining her husband in Japan soon with qualifications that corporates will crawl over broken glass to get her to work for them!

    I don’t understand this part

This year showed a decline in the total nonfarm employment for the year ending March 2019 of 514,000. That was a bit higher than the 500,000 that economists had expected and were indicated back in August.

How can employment have declined if the jobs number keeps going up? What is this number trying to tell me?

A lot of it is revision to existing law, so if you don’t have that in your head, can be hard to follow. But there’s one paragraph in there that is hilarious. @ eaglesoars:

This is a nationalization of a recently enacted California law that is receiving a great deal of pushback, in that it in essense eliminated the “independent contractor” status of Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, etc. drivers and delivery drivers. The idea was to make them “employees” and therefore able to form a UNION (which was the real goal of the law – Democrats love them those union dues).

Of course, what no one realizes is that if you’re EMPLOYEES and want to be unionized, Uber, Lyft, etc., can now REQUIRE that you (a) work during a certain period; (b) pick up rides with a destination you may not wish to go; (c) be FIRED. Without cause, since you are now at-will employees.
