Several thousand people, young and old from strollers to wheelchairs watched the 49th VJ-Day parade, today, in Moosup, CT. Marching groups from as far away as Vermont were here to celebrate what may be the only parade in America to commemorate the end of WWII. Veterans from WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan and Iraq were also honored.

I had the opportunity to talk with WWII SUBVET, Bernie Plantz. Mr. Plantz was on the USS Perch during the war, he also was in a POW camp for 2 years. You can tell by his smile, that he is happy to be an American. Another Marine Korean veteran, who was riding in a vintage Mustang convertible, was approached by someone from the crowd, and given a big kiss. That’s the way this parade was. My impression of the crowd was this was Blue-collar, backbone of America type.

Those “bitter clinger” types, who love their Bibles, guns, and their country. Since this was a big deal event, and an election year, the politicians were out in force. They were tolerated, like ants at a
picnic. One comment I heard was this might be the last parade.

Watching this parade, I feel that the comment made was in GRAVE ERROR, so much so, that there was even a float asking donations for the 50th parade, next August. This was my first time at this parade. It won’t be my last.
