How using Social media got the Media’s attention on The Gosnell case

Many on the political Right are ostriches when it comes to the power of OFA’s use of social media to promote their propaganda. Many think OFA is a fluke and once Obama is gone, that the GOP will be unstoppable in Presidential elections. This is a delusional worldview not based on reality. The latest example about the power of social media actually comes from the Right.

The media had a blackout on the the Kermit Gosnell case. Conservatives went on Twitter and began a grass roots campaign for media action. Lat week, Tweets were directed at reporters to get their attention. By the end of the week, the media admits they overlooked the story and started covering. This was a case of how grassroots on the Right used social media to get attention to a story. The media was forced to cover it.

If there were an award for Most Constructive Shaming of the News Media, the clear winner would be Kirsten Powers, the brave Fox News pundit and Daily Beast columnist. Last Thursday, she called out the mainstream media for failing to adequately report on the ongoing trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortionist who is charged with murdering seven newborn infants and a patient seeking an abortion. Powers’s USA Today piece provoked an instant response from many sheepish journalists.

Megan McArdle of the Daily Beast acknowledged she “should have” written about the “horror Doc’s” clinic. The Washington Post made the stunning admission that “we should have sent a reporter sooner.” Dylan Beers, Politico’s media reporter, flatly stated that “Gosnell should be front-page, top-of-the-hour news by prime time tonight.” Jeffrey Goldberg, a Bloomberg View columnist, concluded, “It’s remarkable that it took this long.”

Indeed, the silence had been stunning since the Gosnell trial began back on March 18. No mention of the story at all on ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, NPR, or MSNBC, and no front-page stories in any major paper. National Review, The Weekly Standard, Breitbart.com, and Michelle Malkin, on the other hand, provided early and consistent coverage. J. D. Mullane, the columnist for the Bucks County Courier Times who has been a tiger on the story, reported last week what he found in the courtroom: In the entire 40-seat section reserved for the media, he was the only one present. A couple of local journos were scattered elsewhere around the courtroom.

The Kermit Gosnell case shows that Conservatives using social media can match the Left. Now if only the Right had its version of OFA. That could be a difference maker.

On Stealth & Stalking

This post is not so much about Stealth as it is about stalking (and not Charles Johnson’s definition).

One of the amazing things about the internest (and social media in particular) is how so many people and things are interrelated – the whole 6 degrees of separation business. Lately I’ve found significantly fewer degrees.

While catching up on a bizarre twisted saga via Twitter (that Stacy McCain and others have been covering extensively) I found a reference to a group of internet warriors called “Rustle League.” They are apparently affiliated with the more well-known cybergroup Anonymous.

I’m not a fan of Anonymous (especially not the Barrett Brown Crypto-Anarchist faction that wants to mess with international affairs and destroy global economics) but occasionally the group does some good.

I came upon a recent story today about a 15 year old girl, bullied online and in real life, had given up hope and threatened to off herself on Twitter. Trolls showed up, but eventually Rustle League and Anonymous got word about it, too. They apparently prevented a distraught girl from killing herself by stalking her stalking trolls and kicking ass.

Other news outlets reported it, and they referenced The Daily Dot. Full story with Twittercaps here.

Oh yeah, about those degrees of separation.
1. I saw a Tweet from a guy I spoke with on the phone a few days ago.
2. It referenced a podcast that named Rustle League.
3. A Google search for RL led me to the Daily Dot story written by an online friend. Politically we hate each other, but we get along otherwise.

Yeah, that’s him. @Mr.Twitter, and he’s way beyond the valley of #awesome.

He determines what’s #trending and what’s #birdpoop. He has full control while we don’t, but he’s really a nice guy. For example he invented #TwitterGulag, didn’t bother to tell @Twitter about it, and then created the #TwitterGulag #Hashtag to show them, and at the same time, to combat it.

He generates his own work that way, kind of like #BruteForceCybernetics did in the 70’s: Invent a problem, find a solution, then advertise the #remedy. Perfect #business #strategy.

@Mr.Twitter is #fkkn #amazing, and he #deserves a #tribute, with something more than 140 characters, on #TheOvernightOpenThread.

Nobody is posting terrible rumors about you on Twitter. Beware of the spambot!

‘Is someone REALLY saying nasty things about you?’ It’s a Twitter scam

By Robb Hicken/ chief storyteller

Got a email in my personal account the other day. It read: “Someone is saying nasty things about you on Twitter.”

Come on! I’m not going to fall for that. And, neither should you. Does it really mean that much that someone is saying something nasty about you?

This is a classic phishing scam!

Clicking on the bit.ly link took me to a fake twitter login. It said that my current session had expired. (I don’t remember ever being knocked off Twitter).

I typed in my login and password, and BBB’s virus scammer stopped me there. “YOU’RE NOT PERMITTED TO ENTER THIS PAGE.”

This week I read further about the scam. It explains this was a phishing scam, and installs malware that would send out direct mail from my Twitter account with similar statements. If anyone received these, my apologies. Our IT department said the virus protector we use should have stopped any items from going out .

A similar Twitter attack was launched in August, October, and December of last year.

If you did click though, take the following steps:

  • Change your Twitter password.
  • Verify the email address for your Twitter account was not changed.
  • If you’ve used the same e-mail address and password on other web sites, then immediately check them out and change their passwords.
  • If your Twitter account is sending out phishing messages, you should also visit the Applications tab in “Account Settings”, and Revoke Access for any third-party application that you don’t recognize.

Remember, you should always be suspicious of links that you are sent in an email, tweet or social networking site. If you are ever in doubt, DON’T CLICK!
