This AP article is just speculation and not to be taken as fact. Romney’s aides acknowledge that he might name his VP pick early in order to get the campaign against Obama in full force. This tactical move will help with fundraising and campaigning. It will also help change the subject from the furious assault he is under from Obama.
(Reuters) – Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney acknowledged on Tuesday he is considering naming his choice to serve as vice presidential running mate earlier than usual to better compete with President Barack Obama.
As they work from a short list of leading Republicans, Romney and his advisers say they are weighing whether he should announce his choice some weeks earlier than the traditional time of around the Republican National Convention, which is to be held in Tampa in late August.
The reasoning, advisers say, is that two candidates would be able to raise more money and engage Obama and Vice President Joe Biden in battle with polls showing Americans closely divided on whether to pick the Republican challenger or Democratic incumbent in the November 6 election.
Picking the choice early could also serve to guarantee some positive news coverage at a time when Romney is under fire from Obama over whether he should release more financial information about his wealth.
Rumors are circulating that Rob Portman is the favorite. This could be a fatal mistake. He was OMB director in the Bush administration and oversaw the increasing budget deficits. He is boring and as Leftist as Romney. Mitt needs someone who will reassure the Right that he is serious about economic/fiscal reform. He also needs to pick someone who represents the future and not the past like Bob Portman does. Picking another Leftist Republican will be a slap in the face to the Right. Tim Pawlenty is another name. He’s also a Progressive and represents the GOP’s Leftist past.
Instead of us complaining how Leftist and elitists the GOP is, let’s get involved and change it. Tomorrow I will have a post on what to do. In the meantime, lets hope Romney chooses wisely for VP. If he doesn’t then after the election we must put pressure on the Tea Party faction in Congress to make Romney’s Presidency a living hell from the Right.
Bonus: Here’s Rush Limbaugh take on the race in a follow up to his comments o Monday.
