Good morning. The Reddit degenerates have picked another target, AMC (movie theaters) and now they’ve had to stop trading. At least two online sites are down, TD and Robinhood.

Somebody had better figure out a way to stop this. If people can’t trust the security of the markets, it’s all over. We’re looking at a barter system.

How to get someone taken out, Part 1.

Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio reportedly worked as an undercover informant

Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio previously worked as a “prolific” undercover informant for local and federal law enforcement — leading to the prosecution of more than a dozen people, according to a new report.

Tarrio, 36, began cooperating with authorities following his 2012 arrest on fraud charges in cases involving drugs, gambling and human smuggling, Reuters reported Wednesday.

Details of Tarrio’s secret work were lodged in a transcript from a 2014 court proceeding in Miami and obtained by the outlet.

Tarrio’s lawyer Jeffrey Feiler had asked for leniency in his client’s sentence after he and two co-defendants pleaded guilty to relabeling and selling stolen diabetes test kits, the report said.

Biden’s EO will direct the Federal Government to replace vehicles with “net-zero” emission electric vehicles, which do not exist, and create the framework for the US to become carbon neutral by 2050, which is more aggressive than the Paris Accord mandate.

National Climate Adviser Gina McCarthy says Biden’s clean plan has a $2 trillion price tag. No specifics on what the $2 trillion plan is.

Biden’s Executive on Climate Change will all direct 40% of federal Climate Change funding to Black and Hispanic communities, to “address the impacts that Climate Change and Covid-19.

I used to hike that a lot (even climbed Old Rag Mountain!) – and frankly, I would not risk it. It’s outside, yeah, but serious hiking requires being comfortable with being dirty. A short hike, say 4 hrs round trip back to the car is one thing. But days on the trail? Nah. During ‘the season’ the place is crowded. I did Old Rag over Labor Day weekend. There was an hour-long line. They needed an elevator. Then some kid got trapped in a chimney, took 2 hours to get him out, which backed up everything even more. And a lot of people simply don’t know or don’t observe proper trail hygiene/etiquette.

    https://www.dhs.gov/ntas/advisory/national-terrorism-advisory-system-bulletin-january-27-2021

    SUMMARY

The Acting Secretary of Homeland Security has issued a National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) Bulletin due to a heightened threat environment across the United States, which DHS believes will persist in the weeks following the successful Presidential Inauguration. Information suggests that some ideologically-motivated violent extremists with objections to the exercise of governmental authority and the presidential transition, as well as other perceived grievances fueled by false narratives, could continue to mobilize to incite or commit violence.

The 2019 El Paso Walmart shooting is cited as part of the justification

Then I saw it as ingenious warfare against big Wall Street investors. It’s economic brinksmanship. People will pull their money out of banks eventually.

If I wanted to destroy the world economy and go back to a New Deal I would do this. Accelerate a bubble til it snowballs.

Everyone should take a look at SAVA. Cassava Sciences Alzheimer’s Drug is about to get BTD status for use. 1st Drug treatment that give dramatic results approved since 2003. On top of that there is a massive Naked Short position when shorts hit the company in May and June of last year because they thought the drug had failed it’s Phase 2 trails. They shorted 179M shares that day and drove the stock from 9 bucks to 1.60 instantly. They didn’t know it was a lab screw up and when reassessed it showed the Drug is so effective that it improved 11 Biomarkers and 2 key memory tests in only 28 day trial. It has been developed over a decade and has no side effects though several years of testing. It repairs a damaged Gene FLNA that over time leads to Alzheimer’s. The stock has doubled to 19.72 in a week. This is you next short squeeze with only 35M shares in the company and $20 Billion in yearly revenue from AD coming up!

    the takeaway:

If the Soviets needed to sortie 100 Tupolevs to have a shot at an American carrier back in the 1980s, today the Chinese probably would need at least a hundred H-6s to do the same thing. “The Chinese would have to fight it in similar fashion,” Cooper said.

The situations aren’t exactly the same, of course. The F-14s and their Phoenixes no longer are in U.S. service. The F/A-18s and AMRAAM missiles that replaced them lack the same long range. “Self-defense capabilities of the USN’s carrier strike groups nowadays are weaker than back in the 1980s,” Cooper said.

This is an interesting question and I have zero clue what the answer might be.

A friend writes wondering how all the retail brokers just happened to go offline this morning Possible class action suit? “If you ask me they were preventing retail from buying on the open possibly to help Wall St. cover their short positions”

Good luck proving that in court, the case would be another Bleak House and run up costs far beyond any damage award could cover. But it IS an interesting question. Do institutional/professional entities ‘deserve’ more protection than retail? The argument can be made that the pro entities are actually proxies for the retail as so many people have IRAs, 401ks etc.

Where are all of the multi-role SM-6s when you need ’em?

The SM-6 does everything except intercept mid course strategic missiles in vacuum. Even that is getting upgraded as we speak. Long range AWD anti-air, anti-cruise, anti ship, anti sea skimming missile, even anti-sub with a lightweight torpedo with parachute fitted. (AKA to Cold War ASROC)

So where are all of the AWDs and cruisers?

I’m looking at my Tesla stock. In 4 months I’ve almost doubled. It’s not a lot in terms of shares but – I’ve done better than any of our so-called ‘investment portfolios’ –

I’m looking for companies that make batteries and robots that can replace fast food workers. And if these idiots are going to insist on electric vehicles, – who does all those ‘charging stations’?

    Tips welcome.

    https://www.huffpost.com/entry/christian-textbooks-trump-capitol-riot_n_6000bce3c5b62c0057bb711f

These Textbooks In Thousands Of K-12 Schools Echo Trump’s Talking Points

Their religion-centered, anti-Democrat, anti-science, anti-multicultural message mirrors the Christian nationalism seen at the U.S. Capitol riot
    .
    .

Yinz know I’m not Christian, so I don’t have a dog in this fight from a personal perspective. But there’s NO DOUBT that the Judeo/Christian ethos is the bedrock of western civilization so any undermining of the tenets, flawed tho they be, gets my attention. You may or may not ‘like’ the lessons found in these textbooks, but that’s beside the point. The point is that the assertion made – that it is the belief system promulgated by these texts that prompted Jan 6 – is an assertion w/o evidence, total garbage and is simply a proxy attack on the foundation of Western Civ.

At one point in an Abeka textbook, slavery is described in purely economic terms, saying that “slaves seemed to be better investments than indentured servants.”

“I absolutely thought of these textbooks when watching what played out last week,” Wellman said. “It’s the anti-science culture, anti-elite, the identification of Christianity with military culture.”

    https://www.huffpost.com/entry/christian-textbooks-trump-capitol-riot_n_6000bce3c5b62c0057bb711f

I’m betting he will rue the day he said ‘anti-elite’. I wanna watch.

I best remember her from Mary Tyler Moore. But there was another part she played in a theater thing that was broadcast on TV that I don’t remember the name of and she was glorious.

She played a widow – say, in her 60s, my age – who got involved with a much younger man – say in his 30s (never seen) – and she was absolutely transported. The women in her circle – also widows/divorcees – were consumed by jealousy. And eventually, the inevitable did the evitable – she got dumped for a younger woman. Humiliation and heartbreak beyond understanding. But her girlfriends were downright gleeful in their I-told-you-so sympathy.

That was a tough part to play to not make the woman look like an idiot and not someone who had reason to believe she was truly loved. She was brilliant.

Progressive Dems urge Biden to send recurring coronavirus stimulus checks

A group of more than 50 House progressives called on President Biden to include recurring stimulus checks instead of one-time payments in the next coronavirus relief package, urging the White House to go further on relief measures as Democratic leaders rush to strike a deal.

In a letter sent to the Biden administration on Thursday, the group of Democrats — led by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. — pushed for regular checks for Americans still struggling financially because of the pandemic, rather than a single $1,400 check. Other letter signatories included other members of the so-called “squad” Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich.

“One more check is not enough during this public health and economic crisis,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter to Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

The progressives did not specify a dollar amount for the payments, but previously introduced legislation last April that called for $2,000 monthly checks.

Under that proposal, every American age 16 or older who earns less than $130,000 annually would be eligible to receive a check worth up to $2,000 per month. The bill would distribute an extra $500 per child for up to three children and would last for six months; a married couple who makes under $260,000 and has three children would receive $5,500 per month.

“Recurring direct payments until the economy recovers will help ensure that people can meet their basic needs, provide racially equitable solutions, and shorten the length of the recession,” the progressives wrote. “As we look at the coming year, another one-time round of checks would provide a temporary lifeline, but when that money runs out, families will once again struggle to pay for basic necessities.”

    Guess what we overhead today?

Vladimir, yes founder Vladimir, and the C-Suite, received calls from Sequoia Capital and the White House that pressured into closing trading on GME etc. I guarantee you the same took place at E-Trade and the others who closed trading.

File reports on the SEC page. If I wasn’t scared to be out of work in a pandemic I’d quit. I’m disgusted. We all need to rise up, this is as bad as it gets when we talk about how the rich get one set of rules, and the rest of us get screwed over, and over, and over again left to bail them out and pick up the tab for their trillion dollar tax breaks. We need to pile pressure on every government and financial institution involved in this travesty of justice.

I’m taking a massive career risk even posting here but fuck these motherfuckers

Buyers and sellers determine price – this is how the market is meant to function.

Not fair for billionaires to determine what price action is legit and what isn’t!

When they are making $, its all legit but when they get taken to the cleaners, they want to change the rules!?

** Apparently Socialmedia and these apps are giving the little guy too much collective power. When I was in stocks the only knowledgeable person I talked to were brokers. They were also the people that let me know I was handicapped in buying and selling stocks because I wasn’t rich enough.

Even people want to say it ain’t there is Chinese money here holding the stocks to bust the short sellers. Chinese will be aware of and intensely focused on gold, real estate, and stocks. The CCP more so. IMO they would know who the short selling targets are and would just drop names.

It does look like a class war where the little guys vote doesn’t matter nor does his dollar. Some big transparency occurring.

Just got this in my inbox from RobinHood.

It’s been a tough day, and we’re grateful to you for being a Robinhood customer. In light of the extraordinary market conditions this week, we temporarily limited buying for certain securities this morning. Starting tomorrow, we plan to allow limited buys of these securities. We’ll continue to monitor the situation and may make adjustments as needed.
This was a temporary decision made to best continue serving you, and was not an easy one to make. We know it’s led to frustration and confusion, and wanted to provide some clarity.
As a brokerage firm, we have many financial requirements, including SEC net capital obligations and clearinghouse deposits. Some of these requirements fluctuate based on volatility in the markets and can be substantial in the current environment. These requirements exist to protect investors and the markets and we take our responsibilities to comply with them seriously, including through the measures we have taken today.
To be clear, this decision was not made on the direction of any market maker we route to or other market participants.
The past year in particular has shown us that the financial markets are for everyone—not just institutional investors and hedge funds. We’ve seen a new generation enter the market, and they’re sparking conversations about what it means to be an investor. We stand in support of you, our customers. Democratizing finance for all means giving more people access, not less.
We’ll keep monitoring market conditions and will update this Help Center article with the latest changes. We also published a blog post regarding today’s events.
Thank you again for being a Robinhood customer. We’re so grateful for your support.

I’m not sure what to think of all this. I think its a market that is supposed to balance out based on anyone buying and selling a stock. I think the Billionaire shorters should know their risk better and not let greed grab them so hard. I’m impressed that there is this whole group of small buyers that know what they are doing better than the stock market does.

Not true for Congress, tho, IIRC Pelosi and her husband apparently had some puts out for Tesla. I think the strike price was around $500 and they allocated $100k-$500k. I don’t know what the date was tho. Anyhoo, they’re big traders, not little people like me.

The guy that led the Reddit revolt put $50K in GameStop in and turned it into $15 Mil by squeezing the short sellers. Kind of awesome.

Meanwhile in other insider trading news, Pelosi bought options in Tesla just prior to Biden announcing the federal gov’t would be buying electric cars.

** I’m not sure of the mechanics of that $50K. It seems like he got in first at the low ball price the short sellers were trying to drive to. Then he got a lot of people to also buy in and reversed the trend of the stock to go up and not down. So his investment doubled, doubled again, doubled again, doubled again, doubled again, doubled again, doubled again, doubled again then he sold. Not bad for a few days work. He should be rewarded for his acumen.

Mixed feelings on this Robin Hood thing.

Without researching it I have the feeling that they may be obligated to make sure their clients are not insane.

When I transferred my UK pension a few years ago I had to have a telephone discussion with the company that transferred it. The discussion was over an hour.

I have a trading account with a well known very large bank that I have never used. Just looked at the agreement I signed and it was 94 PAGES LONG!

Did I read it before I signed it? Well no…

My personal feelings are a very small group of people got a very large number of stupid sheep to buy shares in order to make themselves a huge profit.

    A classic ” pump and dump ”

Buy shares/crypto at a very low price then start a rumor that the stock/crypto is under valued and all the sheep start buying. Price goes up dramatically!

    The clever ones then sell….

Sheep hang on hoping they will be millionaires.

There a several ways to be in the markets that basically fall into 2 categories; traders and investors. Traders don’t hold anything, they’re churning constantly. Investors – people like me – are looking at some fundamentals, but more long term.

Electric cars are not going away. They’re going to become more common (altho I suspect there’s a threshold that will be partly controlled by grid capacity). And Tesla is well-placed to dominate market share. As long as Elon stays off the LSD during the week, I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

For traders, the market really can be a zero sum game. But for investors like me – we just watch the stuff compound, compound, split, compound. Like that.

The Semi0finals of the Prada Cup is ON!

    American Magic vs. Luna Rossa

The American boat showed up yesterday after 400 man hours of repair work thanks to the iwi team, The Brits and the Italians. American Magic is sporting a graphic on her hull of a giant couple of band-Aides with thanks and the 3 ‘helpers’ flags.

Right now Luna Rossa are marginally ahead with good crew work.

Good breeze today and blue skies as far as you can see.

    28C on the water.

Luna Rossa is sailing away with this again. American Magic is now 1000 metres behind (over a minute). American Magic’s skipper didn’t help himself either with a boat that is still full of gremlins. Barker made an error and risked putting more pressure onto the rudder. It snatched and the boat skidded sideways out of control down at the bottom marker.

Luna Rossa looks a much easier and controllable boat to sail. American Magic seems almost out of control all of the time as they try risky tactics to claw back losses due to lower boat speed.

Luna Rossa just needs to relax and sail a controlled race to take this one. 1:53 ahead for Luna Rossa

My only other learning moment was investing in a private equity fund. NEVER allow someone else to have all of the access to the decision making when they are sociopathic bastards. Then there was a syndicated scheme to fund Hollywood movies. In my syndicate was the Minister of Finance and loads of luminaries. Trouble is they were running loss leading operations on the side and were using these financing deals to cover tax debts. The poor ‘regular’ folks who invested in $10k a share finance deals never saw a movie produced. The loss-leader syndicate members were cool as they had their ‘money’ out within under 12 months leaving the rest of us waiting…. and waiting … and waiting for resolution of the contract. After 4 years of delay we got our money back.

I don’t think so. Most people buy a stock expecting/hoping it will go up, betting the other way is ok too, as long as it’s transparent. NAKED shorts are definite no-nos, tho, even tho regs allow them under certain circumstances. But I understand that shorts require a bit of leveraging and that can be scary.

But if I’m the brokerage house loaning shares for what turns out to be a naked short play – well, I wouldn’t be that brokerage house and I’d punish the trader. Or at least increase my fee to make the play a lot less profitable. Someone said today that short positions in AMC are larger than the float.

What I would like to see highly restricted is derivatives.

I’m trying to figure out how to get into an IPO right now, but I’m so busy w/real life stuff today I don’t think I’ll have time.

I any event, my approach to all this is to know for a fact that I’m kinda dumb so don’t get cute. Keep it simple.

Progressives are pushing Biden to get every American earning less than about $130k a guaranteed $2k/mo until the economy recovers.

First I think that 130k is FAR too high, even if it were for a family of 4. And I know the money will come from ‘the rich’ finally paying their ‘fair share’ of taxes. But just how long does the left think that any group of people will turn over 60 or 70 or 90% of their next dollar?

I’d love to get an extra $2000 a month. That’s almost what I make working! We have our credit cards paid off in just a few months, and could start paying the house down very very quickly.

Someone should ask Bill Barr AG why this important case escaped his notice.

The complaint claims that Mackey and unnamed co-conspirators agreed to violate a federal statute protecting citizens in the exercise of their civil rights. Specifically, Mackey and the others are alleged to have propagated intentionally dishonest “memes” on social media in the days and weeks leading up to the 2016 election. Specifically, Mackey and others are alleged to have encouraged “unenlightened” (my word) voters to cast their vote in the 2016 Presidential election by Twitter, Facebook, or “text” to a specific number they posted on social media.

Let’s point out a few objective facts about the documents that have been filed,

First, this is a criminal complaint based on an affidavit filed by an FBI Agent with only 3 years of experience. The conduct described in the affidavit took place more than 4 years ago. Ummm… okay.

Enough from you. You have no idea how it works. “Sentencing” is not agreed upon by Pros. and Def. There are no discussions with the judge in advance. Fed. judges sentence THOUSANDS of defendants over their career. They develop patters and habits in how they approach cases.

** Just a comment. Though Ship is a good legal follow. I have the actual experience in court which apparently he does not.

All lawyers and clients in the hallway at 8 AM. Lawyers go into the courtroom at 8:05 to talk the case with each other. Periodically they come out and ask clients for clarifications in subdued whispers. The lawyers go back in. The plaintiff and the defendant remain in the hallway. 9 AM court room opens. The Judge has listened and directs the speedy system along the lines the lawyers have created.

    @ darkwords:

I read plea agreements every day (literally).

They all say “no agreement is made as to sentencing.” It’s boilerplate text, in fact.

    @ right_wing2:

Progressives are pushing Biden to get every American earning less than about $130k a guaranteed $2k/mo until the economy recovers.

First I think that 130k is FAR too high, even if it were for a family of 4.

It’s actually worse than that. Your hypothetical family of 4 would get $5,000 a month, not $2,000. And the income limit would be $260k.

It’s $2000 per adult and $500 per child, and the income limit is per adult.

DOJ is now investigating Elon Musk (probably because he criticized Biden for delaying Mars mission)

The DOJ’s Immigrant and Employee Rights Section received a complaint of employment discrimination from a non-U.S. citizen claiming that the company discriminated against him based on his citizenship status.

“The charge alleges that on or about March 10, 2020, during the Charging Party’s interview for the position of Technology Strategy Associate, SpaceX made inquiries about his citizenship status and ultimately failed to hire him for the position because he is not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident,”

well then what status does this person have? Every employer makes hiring decisions based on that, I certainly did.

SpaceX Can’t Hire International Rocket Scientists Even If It Wants To

The basics of these regulations is pretty simple: Information about military technology is to be limited to citizens and U.S.-based companies. The law actually uses the term “U.S. Person” to include full-blown citizens and green-card holders. When sensitive information is being bandied about, the government wants to keep companies inside the U.S. where they can be better vetted. In an age of byzantine networks of contractors and subcontractors, it seems like a prudent measure to ensure the United States doesn’t hire, say, a Chinese firm that may be interested in an advanced warplane design. The U.S. State Department can grant an exception to ITAR rules. Violations bring hefty fines and can harm companies trying to win future government contracts.

It gets taxed as standard income if you hold less than a year (thought it was 6 months?). Capital gains taxes are lower than standard income rates

    @ lobo91:
My experience is that lawyers and judges do find ways to talk about sentencing and the addons outside of the actual trial. Maybe that is just from knowing each other really well.

Ship is a great read from his insider knowledge. I agree with him but see things from the outside and can point to a few times where I signed docs that I didn’t agree with but the judge and the lawyer maneuvered the sentence to that outcome. Not because of evidence but because they were in a hurry.

The bottom line is money makes a huge difference in court. And court is best avoided except for the most extreme of issues.

The American Magic boat almost totally lost it again and came close to capsizing … AGAIN

    they are having serious problems

Day #2 of the Semi-finals on the Waitmata Harbour

Day #1 saw Luna Rossa the Italian boat sail two great races. Amercian Magic almost capsized…. again and looks like a really unstable boat that is forced to sail right on the edge all the time to just keep up.

Day #2 Luna Rossa sailed a great tactical race and American Magic just followed it around the course. Three to Zip

Race two on day #2 . American Magic looks disorganised and they seep to be running out of hydraulic energy. The crew are pumping the hydraulics as hard as they can but the boat just seems to demand more than they can produce.

In the end Luna Rossa sailed to a 3minute: 51 sec win. Massive for a boat race like this.

So it’s Luna Rossa vs. Britannia for the Louis Vitton Cup and the rights to challenge Team NZ for the America’s Cup

    @ Bunk X:

Correspondent Gayane Chichikyan was shot down by State Department spokesperson Jep Psaki when she asked about the launch of Kiev’s anti-terror operation which coincided with Vice President John Biden and CIA head John Brennon’s visit. Psaki accused Chichikyan of repeating “ludicrous claims” by the Russian government and refused to answer the question.

The American Magic crew gave it their all. Something happened between the Christmas racing and the Louis Vitton series. The Brits found their mojo and the Yanks found that their boat could compete only when sailed right on the edge. Stats won out in the ens.

    Maybe next time

    🙂
