Starting from mid November and continuing through the Christmas shopping season, the media was proclaiming an unprecedented economic boom. They made it appear as if the 90’s were back and thing were fantastic. A few good reading made them jump for joy. The regime of teh False Messiah was claiming their policies were vindicated. Even Mitt Romney said the economy was doing good. Well reality has set in. Thanks to increasing food and energy costs, consumer confidence declined in January.

Consumer confidence retreated in January after two straight months of big gains, a private research group said Tuesday.

The Conference Board’s Consumer Confidence Index fell to 61.1, from a revised 64.8 in December. Economists had expected a reading of 68. The index had surged from 40.9 in October to 64.8 in December.

The Conference Board said that even though consumers were more upbeat about jobs, they were less optimistic about income prospects. Rising gas prices have also taken a toll on sentiment.

Chicago’s PMI activity was at its lowest reading since August.

Business activity in the U.S. Midwest grew more slowly than expected in January, according to the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago’s index of Midwest business activity.

“January’s Chicago PMI reading of 60.2 compares to 62.2 in December and a market consensus of 63.0, but remains quite healthy,” said David Sloan, an economist with IFR Economics.

Despite the happy talk from David Frum and others, most Americans don’t see it that way. Consumer confidence has fallen to a 2 year low. Keep in mind that it was 2 years ago this summer, the Obama Boom was declared. As we all know, it was a myth invented by the media to create false confidence in the economy. Once again, this was called unexpected or in this case, short of expectations!

U.S. consumer sentiment deteriorated in early July to the lowest level since March 2009 on increasing pessimism over falling income and rising unemployment, a survey released Friday showed.

Confidence in government economic policies also curdled, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan survey showed.

U.S. lawmakers are wrangling over a budget deal that would allow the government to raise the debt ceiling—needed so the United States can fund its obligations next month.

The preliminary reading for the consumer sentiment index dropped to 63.8 in July from 71.5 the month before, falling far short of expectations of an increase to 72.5, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

The Obama Boom continues to defy economic rules. Consumer confidence in April rose. This despite declining wages and increased food and energy costs. No explanation of how this occurred!

U.S. consumer confidence rose in April as inflation expectations eased somewhat and consumers felt better about the short-term outlook, according to a private sector report released Tuesday.

The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes rose to 65.4 in April from a revised 63.8 in March. The reading topped analysts’ forecasts for 64.5.

Consumer confidence fell sharply in March due to increasing inflationary pressures. As the cost of food and fuel continues to rise, people’s incomes are not. This is leading to people cut back spending as prices rise for basic necessities.

The monthly Consumer Confidence Index, which uses 1985 as a base year with an assigned value of 100, fell from 72 in February to 63.4 in March. The Expectations Index, measuring consumer confidence in the economy six months down the road, fell from 97.5 a month ago to 81.1.
