In spite of the growing glacier of scientific evidence against anthropogenic (man made) global warming (AGW), the Obama Regime continues to budget billions of dollars per year to fund more R&D for this quackery. Last year the Senate quashed Cap and Trade legislation which had been passed by the democrat controlled House. Recent polls show that while most Americans are concerned about environmental issues, they continue to be feel that the seriousness of global warming is over exaggerated. And yet the Regime, and those dems left in Congress, continue to govern against the will of the people by pushing climate change regulations on us via the EPA and by adding billions to the deficit with bogus climate change funding. Read the whole thing here: How can climate scientists spend so much money?

There is some positive news. One of the first acts of the new GOP majority House was to disband the Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming. Further, on her first day in office, the newly elected GOP Governor of New Mexico, Susana Martinez, dismissed all members of the Environmental Improvement Board (known as the EIB as Rush lamented) and halted all proposed and pending regulations by that bureau.

We all need to be watching the 112th Congress closely to see that they live up to their promises to de-fund or otherwise stifle the AGW fantasy.

THE 2010 CENSUS IS GOOD NEWS FOR THE REPUBLICANS

The U.S. Census Bureau rolled out its data for the 2010 Census yesterday. The information contained in the census will be used by prognosticators from all segments of government, media, education and industry to forecast where we should, or should not, build our homes, schools and businesses for the next 10 years. The data will be used by marketing companies to determine the best places for them to sell everything from Cheerios to Buicks and Pampers to wheelchairs. Perhaps the most important result of the census is the apportionment of the House of Representatives. The media has already informed us of the winners and losers:

The apportionment winners are:
Texas (4 seats)
Florida (2 seats)
Arizona (1 seat)
Georgia (1 seat)
Nevada (1 seat)
South Carolina (1 seat)
Utah (1 seat)
Washington (1 seat)

The losers are:
New York (2 seats)
Ohio (2 seats)
Illinois (1 seat)
Iowa (1 seat)
Louisiana (1 seat)
Massachusetts (1 seat)
Michigan (1 seat)
Missouri (1 seat)
New Jersey (1 seat)
Pennsylvania (1 seat)

It’s plain to see that the populace is fleeing the Northeast and Midwest for the South and West. The losing states have long been dominated by democrat leadership and their disastrous economic policies of high taxes, overspending, corruption and over-regulation. It will be interesting to see how and where winning states such as Texas place their new seats.

Now here’s the good part. Along with re-apportionment of the House, we also have redistricting which, like the census, happens every 10 years. The state legislatures will redraw their respective congressional districts in order to obtain the most favorable outcome in congressional elections. If you’re on the winning side of an election you call it “redistricting”. If you’re on the losing side of the election you, and your pals in the media, will call it “gerrymandering” because that word sounds evil. Both dems and repubs have been doing it for as long as there have been dems and repubs. As a result of the November elections, the GOP gained over 675 seats in the state legislatures and now controls 55 chambers while the dims control 38 and 2 are tied. This map illustrates which party controls the various state legislatures. Additionally, the GOP controls state governorships 29 – 30 as indicated on this map at RealClearPolitics. I’m not sure what happened to the 50th. At any rate, the GOP governors will help facilitate the good work of the GOP legislatures in the redistricting process.

Bottom line: The convergence of the census, the re-apportionment of Congress and redistricting of the congressional districts should give a boost to GOP dominance of the political landscape for the next 10 years… provided they don’t fook it up.

In this internet age of emails, instant messages, text messages, twitters and tweets, the thank you note has become almost extinct as a written expression of gratitude. Now here is a lady who has not forgotten her good manners and still knows how to write a thank you. Myrtle is a 93 year old widow living in a nursing home in Oklahoma. She owns a small mineral interest (no surface) in a tract of land in Texas. A *landman, wishing to lease that mineral interest, sent her an oil and gas lease along with a check in the amount of $92.00 for her share of the minerals. As one would expect from a polite elderly lady, Myrtle promptly sent the following thank you note expressing her gratitude for the $92.00 check. And just to show you that I’m a man of good manners, I want to thank you in advance for your participation in this open thread.

* A landman is a professional who acquires oil and gas leases for an oil company that wants to drill an oil and gas well.

The Importance of the Texas 23rd Congressional District

We’ve recently had several discussions on the importance and direction of the Hispanic vote in the upcoming mid-term elections. Texas District 23 could well be the national bell weather for the Hispanic vote for several reasons:

1. The 23rd is the largest geographic district in Texas and one of the largest in the country. It stretches from East El Paso County almost to Laredo and includes all of San Antonio. That’s easily 2/3rds of the Texas border with Mexico.
2. The 2000 census shows the population of the District to be 55.1% Hispanic, 41% white, 2% black and 2.2% other. The 2010 census will undoubtedly show a significant increase in the Hispanic percentage.
3. As a border district, Texas 23 represents many of today’s hot button issues such as immigration, border security and the growing violence in Mexico.
4. The race for this district pits the Democrat incumbent, Ciro Rodriguez against Republican Quico Canseco. Both candidates are Hispanic which will tend to mute any racial component of the election.

I had simply assumed that a border district like the 23rd would most certainly be heavily democrat but that is not the case (raaaaacist?).

Real Clear Politics currently shows this district to be a toss-up. The most recent poll that I could find has the Republican up 43% to 37% .

You may remember Rodriguez’ recent outburst against one of his constituents when he was questioned about his vote for Obamacare.

I’ll be keeping a close watch on this race as we get closer to November. Should be interesting.
