High Speed Video of Flipping Cats | Smarter Every Day 58 (Cute Cat vs Physics)

Published on Aug 8, 2012 by destinws2

High Speed video. Cats. Physics. Weightlessness. Of all my videos, if you don’t share this one, you probably never will. Please consider sharing on Facebook. GiGi was not hurt during the making of this video. We took great care to make sure she would be safe. Next I’ll explain how the physics involved in flipping cats allow us to operate Space Telescopes (Seriously).

So as simple of a question as this is, it turns out to be a MAJOR POINT OF STUDY in Physics, Robotics, Space Satellite Control, Weapons Development, Biomedical Engineering, etc. It’s stumped scientists and engineers since Newton’s day. Here’s something interesting. The cat isn’t twisting his back.. he’s actually BENDING it. The next video will go into great detail about what’s going on there, and explain how it relates to studying the farthest points in the universe (Seriously… the fact that a cat can do this allows us to study the Universe.. no exaggeration).

The high speed camera used was a Phantom Miro M320S. Rent one yourself by clicking here. Tell them GiGi the cat sent you!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Instead of saving for my kids’ college, I make videos using the money I would have saved.
The thought is it will help educate the world as a whole, and one day generate enough revenue to pay for their education. Until then if you appreciate what you’ve learned in this video and the effort that went in to it, please share the video. If you REALLY liked it, feel free to pitch a few dollars towards their college fund by clicking here.
Warm Regards,
Destin
It amazes me how some people can take a very complex concept and break it down to its basic premise with brevity and simple language, allowing the layman to fully appreciate the science.  All I can say is I wish I’d thought of it first.
Lets discuss this further with an Overnight Open Thread.
“…and therefore, (+1) = (-1). Any questions?”
I remember this problem. It’s called “Find the Typo.”
[Hint: The typo is about +26.5 degrees from the vertical ray centered on the professor’s head, and 5 lines down on the y-axis. It should say “inverse cosecant” but instead he wrote “boobs.” Click here for more info.]
Coincidentally, I found an old high school notebook in the garage today. An unsent postcard fell out that dates back to when Teh Google was still analog:
It just occurred to me that we haven’t had an Overnight Open Thread in a while. Want to talk about wombats and weasels? Here’s your chance to shine.
Charles’ Law
Lookee what I found opened on my desk when I came home from work today! The 1963 edition of “The Mainstream of Physics” by Arthur Beiser, opened to Page 184!
Let’s analyze this a tad. Here we have a white boy with an igloo (no, he’s not an Aleut or Inuit because they hadn’t been invented yet), a white boy skating, and another white kid with a grill, shades and bermudas.  All three are burning stuff, belching smoke and emitting pollution and greenhouse gases like there’s no tomorrow, contributing to the end of the world as we know it.  Still, some things just don’t seem right:
Arctic boy is in the cold, 14 degrees Fahrenheit, playing with a balloon.
Skate-boy is not so cold at 32 degrees, and his pond is melting and freezing at the same time, and he’s got a larger balloon.
Weenie roasting boy is on the beach, next to the ocean, and the temperature is a balmy 50 degrees F, and he’s got the biggest balloon of all.
There are more problems:
No female representation;
No multi-ethnic representation;
They all have balloons, an obvious elitist toy promulgated to instill waste, capitalist gluttony and greed to indoctrinate young students of physics. They’re probably metallic balloons, too, evil weapons designed by industrialists to damage the power infrastructure and enrich the utility companies at the expense of the proletariat.
Charles’ Law reads thus: Vi/Ti = VfTf
For reasons clearly explained above, Charles’ Law of Physics is inherently sexist, racist, xenophobic and probably has some vague connection to NeoNazis.
This Open Thread is for analysis of Charles’ Law and all of Charles’ Other Laws as well. Have at it.
