Battleground Tracking Poll: Mitt Romney takes lead

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Mitt Romney has taken a narrow national lead, tightened the gender gap and expanded his edge over President Barack Obama on who would best grow the economy.

A new POLITICO/George Washington University Battleground Tracking Poll of 1,000 likely voters — taken from Sunday through Thursday of last week — shows Romney ahead of Obama by two points, 49 to 47 percent. That represents a three-point swing in the GOP nominee’s direction from a week ago but is still within the margin of error. Obama led 49 percent to 48 percent the week before.

Romney has not led in the poll since the beginning of May.

Across the 10 states identified by POLITICO as competitive, Romney leads 50 to 48 percent.

Not quite as good as the Gallup poll has been, but this is another indication that momentum is on Romney’s side. They always like to talk about a “gender gap”, but get this:

Women propelled Romney’s move into first place in the poll — a majority of which was conducted before the Hofstra debate. Obama’s 11-point advantage a week ago among the crucially important group dwindled to 6 points. The Democratic incumbent still leads 51 to 45 percent with women, but Romney leads by 10 points among men.

It really looks like Obama has a gender gap among men. The economy is paramount. Obama can’t win on the economy, so he has to make the election about something else. He had hoped that to be foreign policy, but the Benghazi assassination messed that up. One of those “bumps in the road” that’s “not optimal”, I guess.

ADDENDUM:

Here is the methodology for the poll. You can see that they are now weighting it nearly one-to-one Republican versus Democrat. I think that is a much more likely picture of the expected turnout. I expected to see this. As the time is drawing near, they don’t want their predictions to be too out of line with the actual results. The D+9 polls are over with.

New Low: 17% Say U.S. Government Has Consent of the Governed

This is interesting:

Fewer voters than ever feel the federal government has the consent of the governed.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 17% of Likely U.S. Voters think the federal government today has the consent of the governed. Sixty-nine percent (69%) believe the government does not have that consent. Fourteen percent (14%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The number of voters who feel the government has the consent of the governed – a foundational principle, contained in the Declaration of Independence – is down from 23% in early May and has fallen to its lowest level measured yet.

Tell me something: when a majority of the people feel the government doesn’t have the consent of the governed, how can you possibly say that it does? We are there, Guys and Dolls.

Hispanics support Voter ID Laws

Progressive claim that requiring ID’s to vote is racist. The left claims it discriminates against minorities. Well one minority group doesn’t mind voter ID laws. A majority of Hispanics support voter ID laws. This comes as no surprise to any rational thinking person. Who would oppose showing an ID to vote?

In recent months, the Obama Justice Department and Democrats on Capitol Hill have mounted a full-scale assault on state voter identification laws.  Accusing Republicans of trying to return to the days of Jim Crow, Democrats allege that the laws, many of which require a photo ID for voting, discriminate against blacks and Hispanics.  But an extensive new pollof Hispanic voters in the key electoral states of Florida, Colorado, and New Mexico shows strong support for those very photo ID laws.

As part of a broad survey of Hispanic attitudes on a variety of political issues, the poll, conducted for the conservative group Resurgent Republic, asked a sample of 1,200 voters the following question: “As you may have heard, many states are considering laws that would require registered voters to present photo identification, such as a driver’s license, in order to cast their vote.  Do you support or oppose those laws?”

In Florida, 88 percent of those surveyed said they support the laws, while just ten percent oppose them.  In Colorado 71 percent support the law, while 26 percent oppose, and in New Mexico, 73 percent support the law, while 25 percent oppose.  In general, Hispanic voters in Colorado and New Mexico are more liberal than those in Florida.  But strong majorities in all three states favor photo ID laws.

Another egg in the face of the Left.

How much longer will Obama continue to poll higher?

There is a huge disconnect in Barack Hussein Obama’s overall approval ratings and his handling of the economy. He averages 8 points better than what people thing of his economic polices. As I have written, this is because many people bought into the Obama as redeemer lie. They refuse to give up on Obama. Clearly he has some hold on a large segment of the people.

ANALYSIS By AMY WALTER (@amyewalter):  Although President Obama’s job approval rating of 48 percent (according to Pollster.com average) isn’t exactly stellar, it is remarkably high given the level of economic pessimism and despair among American electorate.

The economy is the most important issue for most Americans, yet few Americans feel very good about it and most don’t approve of the way President Obama’s dealing with it.

The most recent Quinnipiac poll found that just 38 percent of Americans approved of the job the president was doing on the economy and just 27 percent were “satisfied” with the direction of the country. Polling done by ABC News/Washington Post and CBS/New York Times in June found similar results on both counts.

Even so, President Obama’s job approval in the Quinnipiac Poll was 47 percent, a full nine points higher than the 38 percent who thought he was doing a good job on the economy. In the ABC /Washington Post poll, his overall approval rating was seven points higher than his approval rating on the economy. In the CBS/New York Times poll, the gap between his overall approval rating and his handling of the economy was 8 points.

Obama’s job approval ratings defy political gravity. The only question now, is if they can do so for much longer.

Gallup and Rasmussen have his approval rating in the mid 40’s, despite economic approval ratings that are lower. This is why The GOP should hammer Obama and make him lose his cool more. The mystique of Obama the divine needs to be destroyed. He needs to be made into a normal politician. Once this occurs, his approval ratings will collapse. Until then, this disconnect about Obama will continue.
