NEWTOWN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut/AP)— CBS News is reporting that 27 people are dead, including 18 students, after a mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. The gunman is among the dead.
CBS News’ John Miller reports there is preliminary information that the gunman was the father of one of the students. Miller additionally reports the gunman is 20 years old and is from New Jersey.
The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. It is not known whether the shooter took his own life or was killed.
Fox Connecticut reports that the shooting began in the kindergarten classroom.
This is a horrible tragedy. Unfortunately, Progressives will be all over this to try to get political advantage. In the meantime, my prayers go out to the families who have lost loved ones.
Update: Right on cue, Progressives are trying to take advantage of this tragedy. Canadian Marxist David Frum mocks 2nd Amendment supporters with this Tweet.
This is just disgusting on David Frum’s part.

Update II: The earlier reports that the shooter was the father of one of the students is incorrect. The perpetrator was the son of a teacher at the school.
The gunman has been identified as 24-year-old Ryan Lanza, CBS News reported. He was found dead inside the building from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, sources told CBS 2.
One of the adult victims is Lanza’s mother who was a teacher at the school, sources told CBS 2. Some of the child victims were her students, sources said.
State Police Lt. Paul Vance would only say that students and staff were among those killed. He would not give details on the exact number of victims and said families were being notified.
A law enforcement source told CBS News two pistols, a Sig and a Glock, were found in the school and a Bushmaster rifle was found in a car. A preliminary trace shows that the guns belonged to Lanza.
A second suspect has been taken into police custody in Hoboken, New Jersey, CBS News reported.
