NFL Wake 8 – “And to the Republic for Richard Stans…..”

I’m not going to talk about the NFL this week – why report on an organization that’s hell-bent on being the architect of its own destruction.

It is my practice on Friday to give the office denizens a break from my Monday-Thursday playing of pretentious contemporary jazz and throw a 60’s dance party courtesy of Pandora. This week, they played “Groovin'” by the Young Rascals (they would later drop the “Young” from their band name, no doubt having reached the untrustworthy age of 30). In the song, one lyric always bugged me:

“Life would be ecstacy…you and me and Leslie.”

I always wondered where the hell LESLIE came from and that such an implied threesome was a bit risque for the 60’s. More importantly, why is a.m. radio promoting it? Of course, some years later, I realized the lyric was actually “you and me ENDLESSLY” …

Thanks to William Safire and his most excellent book “On Language” (I STILL have my copy), I would later learn (1) that I was not only the only one who heard these lyrics incorrectly, but (2) there was an actual name for such a thing – a Mondegreen.  And there are hundreds of them.  So let’s have some fun today.  What ones do you recall?  You may not use an example of anything from “Blinded by the Light.”  The whole song is one long Mondegreen.

In the NFL, these people will be working today:

Vikings @ Browns
Raiders @ Bills
Colts @ Bengals
Chargers @ Patriots
Bears @ Saints
Falcons @ Jets
49rs @ Eagles
Panthers @ Bucs
Texans @ Seahawks
Cowboys @ Redskins (I STILL remember that Landry commercial…..)
Steelers @ Lions

Monday’s Game
Broncos @ Chiefs

These people will not be working today:  Cardinals, Packers, Jaguars, Rams, Titans and Giants.  Many will not care.

In the World Series, Game 5 of the tied up 2-2 is at 8:00 p.m. on Fox – at Dodger Stadium

In the NHL, three teams are up – check your local listings

Ducks @ Hurricanes
Penguins @ Jets
Capitals @ Flames

NASCAR is at short-track Martinsville this week, as the final four races to decide this year’s champion wind down the longest season in sports.

As per usual, it’s our Sunday OPEN thread, so feel free to yell FIRST! or go off topic right away.

“Louie Louie” by the Kingsmen. Everyone thought they kind of mumbled something like ‘fuck all night” but they didn’t actually. It was a well known ‘fact’ that you had to slow the record down to actually hear the obscenities. IIRC, the FBI actually got involved because people couldn’t have THAT playing on the radio.

One of my favorite mondegreens is one I made up myself! It’s for “R.O.C.K. In The USA” by John Cougar Mellencamp.
The song was released at about the same time a certain pr0N star was actually mainstream. The mondegreen goes: “I love SEKA In The USA”…!

BREAKING NEWS: Paul Manafort Indicted, Surrenders To Federal Authorities…
Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort surrendered to federal authorities on Monday as the first charges from the probe of possible Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election are expected to be unsealed soon.

Manafort’s onetime business partner and protege Rick Gates has also been told to turn himself in.

The move represents a dramatic turn in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Manafort was seen leaving his home at 8:00 a.m. with his attorney and arrived at FBI headquarters less than 20 minutes later.

A federal grand jury approved the indictments on Friday and a judge ordered them sealed. A White House official told DailyMail.com on Monday that the administration may not comment at all on the arrests.

Manafort and Gates were the one-two punch responsible for keeping Republican National Convention delegates in line last year as the possibility emerged of a contentious floor fight over the presidential nomination.

Well, I can see how I’m spending my lunch hour today.
Fascinating the timing, don’t you think? Mueller/Comey suddenly are not only in the spotlight for their involvement in Uranium 1 and the Steele Dossier, and this WSJ editorial demanding Mueller resign, plus Grassley now calling for Special Counsel to investigate these matters (and Sessions isn’t RECUSED so can make his own appointment), this is looking quite a bit like a “Look!
    Squirrel! moment).

    @ Deplorable Barbarian:

What I’m not seeing – agreeing with, I guess – is the scenario that this is how Mueller flips Manafort to get to Trump. Manafort wasn’t with the campaign that long, if he had anything to do w/the Trump Jr mtg w/the Russian chick, so what, the Trumps didn’t take the bait. I don’t see how a connection can be made.

BUT. During the time period covered, there was a firm relationship with the Podesta group in place.

    but what do I know….

  17. 20 | October 30, 2017 10:32 am

    @ eaglesoars:

I think Mueller realizes there is no “there” there vis-a-vis Manafort’s ability to implicate Trump as there is nothing to the Trump collusion allegations. This is just “make work” $$ for his buds. The Uranium 1 / Dossier stories forced his hand to actually come up with something because like Comey thinking that criticism of Trump would keep him from firing him, Mueller now believes that issuing an indictment is going to provide insurance against Trump’s firing him (Trump wouldn’t do it anyway at this point).

Also, there is a strong whiff in the air that that whole “hotel meeting” with Donald Jr. was a setup by Fusion GPS as they worked with that Russian lawyer chick in the past. I give these devious sh*ts credit – they look at things from the long haul to get the ducks in place if they need them.

thank you. you’ve just allowed me to articulate something that’s been squirming around in my head and I just could not grab it.

Trump has frightened people far beyond any real threat to their world he actually carries – as far as we know

If, say, Cruz had got the nomination, would they have pulled this? No. So it’s NOT just that they got worried that all Hillary’s crimes would be exposed if she didn’t win. It’s that TRUMP won.

As for the idea put forward in the book Shattered, that trying to delegitimize Trump’s election by using the Russia lie was a decision made right after Hillary lost – that lie was already being constructed by the traps they tried to set before the campaign.

I just have the sense that the ordnance deployed against Trump seems comparable to taking an Abrams tank against a rabbit.

    Unless it’s not a rabbit.

Trump is a “Guy from Queens” – he talks like a Guy from Queens and he fights back like a Guy from Queens. Sure he drops his foot in his mouth a lot – people do this. They don’t have measured words and phrases written for them. And when they disparage Trump, they disparage the every man.

Fox should be ashamed of itself for allowing Tom Steyer’s ad to impeach Trump to air before the World Series. I hope they’re catching HELL for it this morning.

I didn’t watch, but I’m glad they did. Most people couldn’t tell you who Steyer is and it’s a great way to get a lot of people introduced to him and his agenda. And also to take his money. Make him spend it all.

Ok, now we hear about this guy Papadopoulos for the first time. Indicted for lying. Former ‘foreign policy advisor’ to Trump campaign. Yeah, he wasn’t a big deal. He did convey that ‘Russians’ had reached out to him saying they would like to meet with Trump and Pap forwarded that info to the campaign. The info got forwarded up the chain of command until it hit THIS wall:

The government notes that the official forward PAPDOPOULOS’s email to another Campaign official (without including defendant PAPDOPOULOS)and stated: “Let[‘]s discuss. We need someone to communicate that DT is not doing these trips. It should be someone low level in the campaign so as not to send any signal.”

Got that? Trump ain’t making any trips to meet Russians, if anybody does it will be a nobody.

Smacks of the same BS they got Scooter Libby on. Never did anything wrong but lied to the FBI. It’s going to be the same here.

What is interesting is there do not appear to be any NAMES here regarding the people that Papadopolous met with. Why am I still highly suspicious of all this and smelling set up. I do not believe for a minute that the Russians wanted Trump elected, not with the Uranium 1 blackmail goods they had on Clinton.

having read the entire article, I see that it’s not just Podesta stepping down, they’re dissolving the entire firm and reconstituting it as another entity. They say it’s been “in the works for months”, which I suspect means “As soon as we realized we fucked up”.

    @ Deplorable Barbarian:

Apparently, this guy wasn’t even on the payroll. why they bothered with him remains a mystery to me.

I have never believed that Putin wanted Clinton to win. She’s far too unstable and I’m pretty sure Putin sees that. All he needed to do is look at Libya. It’s no use taking advantage for all the opportunities for graft she presented if she ends up burning down the house.

    http://www.nationalreview.com/article/453244/manafort-indictment-no-signs-trump-russia-collusion

The Paul Manafort indictment is much ado about nothing . . . except as a vehicle to squeeze Manafort, which is special counsel Robert Mueller’s objective

    the details are quite illuminating
