From our friends at Space Weather:

INTERSTELLAR ASTEROID “LIKE NOTHING SEEN BEFORE”: In Oct. 2017, the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawai’i picked up a faint point of light moving across the sky. At first it appeared to be an ordinary asteroid–but astronomers quickly realized it was something entirely different. The hurtling object, since named “‘Oumuamua,” came from interstellar space. At the time of its discovery, ‘Oumuamua had just swung around the sun. Telescopes around the world swiveled to observe it before it could leave the Solar System. Findings from those rapid observations were published in today’s issue of Nature, and they reveal a very strange object indeed:

Above: an artist’s concept of interstellar asteroid ‘Oumuamua [more]

According to a European Southern Observatory (ESO) press release, ‘Oumuamua is “like nothing seen before.” It is red, made of dense rock or metal, and is shaped roughly like a giant cigar at least 400 meters long.

These are the findings of a team of astronomers led by Karen Meech (Institute for Astronomy, Hawai`i, USA) who combined images from the ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile with other large telescopes. ‘Oumuamua varies dramatically in brightness by a factor of ten as it spins on its axis every 7.3 hours. “This unusually large variation in brightness means that the object is highly elongated: about ten times as long as it is wide, with a complex, convoluted shape,” says Meech.

The asteroid’s dark red color is probably caused by cosmic rays irradiating its surface for millions of years in deep space. Cosmic rays have a similar coloring effect on asteroids and comets native to our outer Solar System.

Extrapolating ‘Oumuamua’s trajectory back in time, it seems to come from the direction of the star Vega. However, Vega itself moves and was not in the area when ‘Oumuamua was last there ~300,000 years ago. ‘Oumuamua may well have been wandering through the Milky Way, unattached to any star system, for hundreds of millions of years before its chance encounter with the Solar System.

Researchers estimate that interstellar asteroids similar to ‘Oumuamua pass through the inner Solar System about once per year, but they are faint and so have been missed until now.Only recently have survey telescopes such as Pan-STARRS become powerful enough to discover them.

“We are continuing to observe this unique object,” says team member Olivier Hainaut from the ESO in Garching, Germany. “And now that we have found the first interstellar rock, we are getting ready for the next ones!” Stay tuned.

Petard, meet hoist. It was no coincidence that the stories about Moore broke on the exact day it was too late to change the ballot – because McConnell expected him to step down.

Supposedly the polls show Jones ahead. I have a hard time believing that. Jones supports late term – up until actual birth – abortion and is for ‘common sense’ gun laws. In Alabama? Srsly?

So Moore wins and the Senate expels him. Then what? That just seems like a non-starter to me.

complaint (in this case probably an ethics complaint), investigation, vote. two thirds of the votes required for successful expulsion. I think, tho, that in an investigation procedure, Moore would get some defense procedure and that would get ugly. There’s a lot of dirty laundry up there and Moore would have no compunction about airing it.

I don’t think the Rs would dare in any case, after all the stuff that’s been coming out. Who knows what bodies are buried where? I half-seriously wonder if the people like Jeff Flake decided not to run because they were concerned about what might come out (altho I understand his numbers were under water in any case).

And mid-terms are coming up. They have some big fish to fry and they need to start to focus. They don’t need scandal machines running 24/7

I don’t buy it. He did get to see Our Lady of Fatima’s 3rd prophecy and was very circumspect about revealing that (it was about Communism, IIRC. If he’d truly had a predictive vision, I don’t think he would have conveyed it in such a casual manner, but would have been sure to have planted ‘seeds’ somehow. Maybe with Benedict, because they truly respected each other. But Longhi certainly would not have been the only one to hear this if John Paul truly thought he was being used to warn about the plague of Islam.

This might turn out to be important. Maybe. And I’ve never heard of the supplement

<emAn over-the-counter High Street supplement reduces breast cancer aggressiveness by up to 80 per cent, new research reveals.

N-Acetylcysteine (NAC), which is sold as a supplement in Holland & Barrett in the UK and is approved as a cold and flu remedy in the US, significantly lowers levels of the breast cancer aggressiveness marker MCT4, a study found.

In the US, NAC, which is considered a miracle supplement, is available from Walgreens, Walmart and CVS and is priced from as little as $4.79 for a bottle of 30 600mg capsules.

Study author Professor Michael Lisanti from the University of Salford, UK, said: 'High levels of MCT4 are extremely worrying as they are linked to aggressive cancer behavior and poor overall survival, so this is [a] very encouraging result.'

'To be able to inhibit MCT4 protein expression, in a non-toxic way, is huge step forward.'

I did too, because to me it happened on the 23rd. Dad was stationed on Okinawa when it happened so in fact we woke up the morning of the 23rd to learn that the President had been assassinated. It was not an event that I experienced “as it happened” and I always get the date a little confused initially.

Harrisburg, PA Violent Elementary School Students Have Caused 40 Teachers To Resign Since July
Emotions were high inside the Harrisburg School Board meeting Monday night as The Harrisburg Education Association pleaded with the board for help following violent encounters in the classrooms at elementary schools throughout the district.

First grade teacher Johanna Brown describes what’s going on in her classroom at Downey Elementary, saying to the school board, “Are we getting hurt? This bruise is from last Friday.”

Brown described a student in her room, saying, “She will kick and hit her classmates. She will throw the entire contents of her desk at every single student just to get attention.”

The emotional plea to the school board for help also came from fellow teachers.

“I have been kicked, hit, punched scratched. I’ve had a student physically restrain me in front of my other students, grabbing my arms from behind where I was unable to move,” First Grade Teacher Amanda Shaeffer said.

Educators asked the board for more training when it comes to mental health and trauma situations, along with better communication with administrators.

Parents and grandparents got up to speak too, one woman stating her foster son has been bullied by other children and the teacher needs help.

“She needs help. The kids in her room are so out of control, how are you supposed to be sitting here working when someone’s going underneath another child’s desk with permanent marker writing all over their sneakers,” Lorraine Badget said.

Since July, the Harrisburg Education Association says more than 40 teachers have left the district.
