Training is almost over. We take the test Tuesday afternoon. Seems like a pretty good group, and I think most will pass. I’m more worried about my passing than some of them!

Part of me wishes I’d waited for a different opportunity.

This is a good start though.

Oh yea… The SEC has informed me that they are going to ask Scottrade if they did anything illegal with my account, but that if Scottrade denies it, oh well, there is nothing the SEC can do about it. What, does Hillary Clinton own Scottrade, or just run the SEC??? Somehow I knew this was going to happen.

    @ eaglesoars:

The ArcelorMittal plant locally has been fighting with the EPA for years.

    https://www.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/news/2017/12/21/settlement-reached-for-1-5m-with-arcelormital.html

If you can’t make coke, you can’t make steel. And for years it has been impossible to meet air quality standards and produce coke at a profit. Period. If they get under their limits, the EPA wold tighten the limits.

I can only speak for US Steel, and they’re hiring like gangbusters.

    @ Deplorable Bumr50:
Read somewhere in the past year that the reason U.S. steel isn’t the best is too many contaminants from recycled material. Stuff like mercury can’t be driven out so steel from foreign markets, like say China, is a more pure metal then what we get here in North America due to recycling standards.

    @ PaladinPhil:

I can’t speak to that at all, but I can ask. The old man was in every mill in the Mon Valley every day, as a guy selling them their machinery, for 40+ years, and many of his friends were directly involved in production and rolling.

I can say that they are hiring like CRAZY, ad that nobody liked the fact that they upgraded the corporate wide computer system instead of ‘upgrading’ to a new hot mill. (“Bean counters, amirite…,” that kind of thing)

    @ Deplorable Bumr50:

thanks. one of the reasons I asked is because it is so seriously at odds w/everything else I’ve been hearing. The other reason is that a one-plant profile immediately makes me wonder if there is something particular to that plant. Now, your comment

If you can’t make coke, you can’t make steel. And for years it has been impossible to meet air quality standards and produce coke at a profit

makes me ask – why are other plants not having the same issue?

ArcelorMittal is based in Luxembourg. Just throwing that out there.

Honestly have no idea where US Steel is getting their coke.

We just had a large plant close on Neville Island last year.

USS Clairton makes coke in-house, but other than that I don’t know.

I also don’t know who else is actually making steel other than AK in Buter, PA.

ArcelorMittal (the ‘Luxembourg’ based company) also bough Weirton steel, and Wheeling-Pitt and Allegheny ludlum are relics of the past.

I think I’m going to repurpose an old phone and put it in my jeep as a security device. I’ve been looking for a device that can detect attempted breakins and notify my phone. This might work for that. I don’t want an annoying alarm device. (I’m also on a budget for a couple more months.)

    thoughts?

simple, the rest of the world is dumping right now ahead of the coming tariffs. i read that article and the writer is willfully ignorant of the way the steel market works. this is fairly common all the way back to the first Basic Steel Contract. A simple reading of ‘And the Wolf Finally Came’ or a simple interview with management or with a non-hand selected steel worker will reveal that this sort of layoff is and was common. it is a temporary reaction to lack or orders.

What would happen with the BSC (before the rest of the world was allowed to dump) is that there would be massive orders in the final year of the contract as the consumers of various kinds of steel would get their inventory built up in case of a strike. that would lead to a down year with layoffs and then as supplies were consumed, the workers would be called back as orders piled in.

the writer has no clue about the steel industry and they hand picked workers who would say bad things about trump for the article.

i see your article and raise you a Mingo Junction. the writer didnt bother going there, didnt bother to go to the mon valley either where USX is hiring as fast as they can.

I have to go to bed. I just want to bring something to your attention. So, today, we find out via WaPo that McCabe is going to leave quietly, as soon as his pension kicks in.

Some hours later Trump tweets this:

How can FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, the man in charge, along with leakin’ James Comey, of the Phony Hillary Clinton investigation (including her 33,000 illegally deleted emails) be given $700,000 for wife’s campaign by Clinton Puppets during investigation?

    Translation:

McCabe – I’m going to go, not giving you any problems

Trump – no deal. I’ve got your ass on bribery.

note: Jill McCabe, his wife, ran for state senate in Virginia. Via Terry McAuliffe[aka ‘Clinton Puppets’] , our governor and Clintonista fund raiser extraordinaire, she got $700k funneled from the Clinton foundation. Virginia law allows any unexpended campaign funds to be kept by the candidate.

Anybody who still thinks Donald Trump is an idiot is beyond help.

    nite

Santa’s Grotto staff tell children their ‘reindeer’ had to go back to the North Pole when they were shot dead by callous poachers
Staff at a Santa’s grotto were forced to tell families that its ‘reindeer’ had to return to the North Pole after poachers shot three of the animals dead during the night.

The Santa’s Journey experience at Djouce Golf Club in Roundwood, Co. Wicklow, had been keeping three Sika deer in the ‘Reindeer Way’ section of its attraction – which has been open since November.

Last Saturday, when staff came to work at the Christmas experience – which includes a train ride around Santa’s runway and workshop, among other sights – they found the three deer missing from their pen, which was awash with blood.

Related to the steel Topic: I currently work in the metals industry and we are going gang Busters and next year is projecting to be just as good— we are actually limited by our capacity and the suppliers ability to sell us all the raw material they produce. Our only fear is if there is a strike or one of the lines fails.

    Merry Christmas all!
