Harvard Law Professor: Let’s Have A ‘Children’s Crusade’ For Gun Control, Let 16-Year-Olds Vote

In their neverending quest to find sympathetic faces to promote unpopular policies, the Left has now seized on children to stump for gun control. Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Tribe led the way.

While most of the media aren’t calling for children to vote – that would be fully idiotic, considering that most children aren’t capable of properly driving a car or making responsible decisions about anything from alcohol to sex – they are trotting out classmates of the victims of the Parkland, Florida shooting in order to push the gun control agenda. High school students dominated the weekend media coverage of the gun control issue – to such an extent that President Trump supposedly asked patrons of Mar-a-Lago whether he ought to consider gun control proposals.

This is foolishness of the highest order.

The measure of whether a proposal has merit or not should not be the personal emotional investment of the person making the proposal. We don’t let doctors operate on their own family members for a reason. And just because someone saw a classmate shot to death does not grant expertise on matters of policy.

    http://triblive.com/state/pennsylvania/13324011-74/pa-court-issues-new-congressional-map-gop-likely-to-challenge

Pa. court issues new congressional map; GOP likely to challenge

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania’s high court issued a new congressional district map for the state’s 2018 elections on its self-imposed deadline Monday, all but ensuring that Democratic prospects will improve in several seats and that Republican lawmakers challenge it in federal court as they seek to protect their advantage in the U.S. House.

The map of Pennsylvania’s 18 congressional districts is to be in effect for the May 15 primary and substantially overhauls a congressional map widely viewed as among the nation’s most gerrymandered. The map was approved in a 4-3 decision.

Most significantly, the new map likely gives Democrats a better shot at winning seats in Philadelphia’s heavily populated and moderate suburbs, where Republicans had held seats in bizarrely contorted districts, including one labeled “Goofy Kicking Donald Duck.”

The redrawn map could boost the Democratic Party’s quest to capture control of the U.S. House and dramatically change Pennsylvania’s predominantly Republican, all-male delegation.

Meanwhile, sitting congressmen, dozens of would-be candidates and millions of voters have to sort out which district they live in barely a month before the candidates’ deadline to submit paperwork to run.

Republican lawmakers are expected to quickly challenge the map in federal court, arguing that legislatures and governors, not courts, have the constitutional responsibility to draw congressional maps.

The Democratic-majority state Supreme Court ruled last month in a party line decision that the district boundaries unconstitutionally put partisan interests above neutral line-drawing criteria, such as keeping districts compact and eliminating municipal and county divisions.

The decision is the first time a state court threw out congressional boundaries in a partisan gerrymandering case and handed a victory to the group of registered Democratic voters who sued last June in a lawsuit backed by the League of Women Voters.

Candidates can start circulating petitions to run in their new district in a little over a week, Feb. 27. Pennsylvania has seen a surge in interest in running for Congress with six incumbents elected in 2016 not running again — the most in four decades — and Democrats vehemently opposing President Donald Trump.

Pennsylvania’s Republican delegation has provided a crucial pillar of support for Republican control of the U.S. House since 2010.

Republicans who controlled the Legislature and governor’s office after the 2010 census crafted it to elect Republicans and succeeded in that aim: Republicans won 13 of 18 seats in three straight elections under the now-invalidated map, even though Pennsylvania’s statewide elections are often closely divided and registered Democratic voters outnumber Republicans.

The new map will not apply to the March 13 special congressional election in southwestern Pennsylvania’s 18th District between Republican Rick Saccone and Democrat Conor Lamb.

I posted this last week (I get FDA animal stuff). It’s not the first time. Evanger’s was cited the first time after 2 pugs in the same family died.

They THINK that ‘downer’ animals are being supplied by unscrupulous suppliers. These are animals that are euthanized w/phenobarbital and they are in no way allowed in any food supply. My understanding is that their remains are incinerated.

Mia is just fine. I spend extra time loving up Willow so she does grace us with her presence from time to time. The problem is that Willow is now 6 yrs old and she has no patience with a puppy who tries to nurse and generally act like an annoying mosquito with needle teeth. OTOH, Mia does need to learn basic etiquette, eg, don’t even THINK about taking the chew hide away from the matron.

Mia can already navigate stairs (YIKES!) and she’s adventurous but doesn’t have the death-wish recklessness that her aunt Bonnie had, thank god. She knows her name, comes when called and is a happy little girl. My concern that she would miss her littemates seems to be unfounded. She’s too busy exploring and playing with the too-many-to-count toys. And she is beyond affectionate. She’s spent the two nites with us asleep in my arms. She has a small soot-like mark on her right front paw so I call her Smudge. Tomorrow the weather is going to be in the 70s, so she gets her first walk around outside. She is, of course, perfect.

Mayor Demands NRA Move Convention From Dallas — Because Of The 1963 JFK Assassination

On Monday Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway (D) cited the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy and demanded that the NRA cancel its upcoming convention.

The convention is scheduled to take place in the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

Mayor Pro Tem Caraway spoke Monday about the scheduled NRA convention. Fox 4 reported that he framed his demand that the NRA pull out by pointing to JFK’s assassination, then pivoting to the July 7, 2016, fatal ambush of five Dallas police officers, the Florida school shooting, and November 2017 murder of a 27-year-old mother of six in the city, allegedly at the hands of a 15-year-old.

    Caraway said:

Gun violence has played a significant part in Dallas’ historical past from the assassination of President John F. Kennedy to the five Dallas Police officers gunned down in July 2016 to the brutal murder of a mother of six children in District 4 this past Christmas. It is time to put the heat on the NRA and demand that they work with elected officials in our country to establish gun laws that protect our children and keep our communities safe. We have got to take on the NRA.

CBS DFW reports that Caraway also said, “We have got to take on the NRA. I am all for the protection of the 2nd Amendment but I am also for protecting the children and a safer Dallas. We must get rid of these assault weapons to protect the children and we must do something now.”

This is a great piece on the liberal dream of taking our guns. What they dream will happen (everybody voluntarily turns over their guns) vs what would happen – assassination and civil war. But in the middle is this handy-dandy mythbuster about what really happened in Australia.

    ——–
Australia made it extremely difficult to buy a new gun as it instituted a completely voluntary gun buyback. This means that in 1996, there were 17.5 guns per hundred people and in 2016, the number was only down to 13.7 per hundred people. So Australia’s big accomplishment was to decrease the number of guns in its nation by 22 percent.

    Correct.

But what is left6 in the noise isn the fact that the Aussies turned in a load of crap firearms with shot out barrels and covered in rust. With the VERY generous ‘buy back’ funding that the got for this rubbish they immediately bought back top of the line semi-automatic shotguns which were still legal and which were perfect for home defence.

Hell I know of Judges who buried their prised guns and I personally know a QC (Queens Council) who buried away his family Winchester (the gun that won the West). Strangely there was a massive ‘run ‘ on heavy walled map tubes at the time and some smart guys made a killing importing tens of thousands into the country before the amnesty took place.

In OZ the standard of firearms increased significantly after the buy-back.

    True story folks, was there.

@ Deplorable Barbarian: The issues here are that gun regulation provokes an emotional response. For either side, there is no argument that works to convince someone on the other side. As the saying goes, ” One cannot be reasoned away from a position that one didn’t reason oneself into to begin with.” Both sides reject the terms of the other side.

oh, sorry I’m so late getting back to you. If you like spy fiction I highly recommend the Jason Matthews trilogy Red Sparrow, Palace something or other, and the one that just came out The Kremlin Candidate. Matthews was a CIA operative – he actually ‘did’ Moscow, he knows it all and it shows. You will not put it down.

Also in spy fiction from the British side, try Mick Herron’s The Slough House Series. It is laugh out loud hilarious dialogue and writing but deadly serious stuff. Slough (‘slow’) House is where the fuck ups get shoved off to until they collect their pensions, kill themselves or quit and the cast is priceless. You will never guess the full story until the end, it’s quite subtle, I loved it.

Robert Harris Cicero trilogy; Imperium, Dictator, Conspirita. This is historical fiction, quite accurate as far as available sources go, based in large part on some records left by Cicero’s scribe, Tiro, a slave who invented the first shorthand (we still use his ‘@’ among other things).

And just on general principles you MUST read The Alienist by Caleb Carr. Set in NYC when Teddy Roosevelt was police commissioner, it is a detective story following a serial killer and one of the firs female detectives (tho not the main character). It is superb.

Let me know if you want some non-fiction.

You might like Dan Jones’ series, The Plantagenets, WAr of the Roses, Magna Carta

Princes at WAr is a bit of an eye opener about how the Royal Houses of Europe fell for Hitler – or not.

And a really fun book – A Time Traveler’s Guide to Medieval England by Ian Mortimer.

“Assault weapon” is a meaningless term invented by the media.

Assault rifle is a real term, and it means things like the actual M-4 or M-16 that have the capability to fire on full auto.

Yes, you can legally own one, but it takes reams of paperwork, a $200 tax stamp from the ATF, and you’ll pay about as much for one as you will for a pretty nice car.

    LOL!

    Pretty much, yeah.

The reason the ones you can actually buy are so expensive is because it’s a finite product pool. In 1986, the banned the manufacture or importation of full auto weapons for sale to the general public. What was already in circulation wasn’t banned, though. The prices just went through the roof.

That’s why you see references to “pre-1986” or “pre-ban” in those ads. That means it’s legal to sell to anyone who does the paperwork and has the cash.

There are actually new-production automatic weapons out there in private hands, though. There’s a loophole of sorts in the law. Licensed dealers who have a Class III license (meaning they can sell full auto weapons) can purchase what are called “dealer samples” from the manufacturers. Once they have them, they can do whatever they want with them–except sell them to anyone but another dealer.

It’s crazy that people on the right are disavowing evidence in his case.

He’s a political operative. I don’t care how old he is.

I’m supposed to accept that he’s just a random kid that attends school in places with nice beaches, survives school shootings, and gives the media left-wing talking points?

FBI Agent Hogg raised a progeny all right.

I wonder just how much money this little punk thinks the NRA gives to Rubio–or any other candidate? I’m sure he thinks it’s millions.

Just like any other PAC, they’re limited to $5,000 per candidate per election.

I’m going to bed. before I forget, there was a guy from Australia who called in to Chris Plante’s show to say after they enacted their ‘gun ban’, crime went up – like home invasion.
