As yinz are aware, Mrs Coldwarrior and I are total and complete vodka snobs. In our cabinet is Tito’s Handmade, Reyka, Jewel of Russia (Ultra), and Russian Standard. Luksusowa is the house vodka and does an admirable job as well.
When we test a new vodka it is done at room temperature, two shot glasses each, swish in the mouth, taste everything slowly. We have eliminated several so called ‘high end’ vodkas by this method for awful and sometimes weird flavors. Room temperature gives you the palletand nose and quickly reveals the undesirable tastes that are masked by drinking it at freezer temperature. Room temperature is the great equalizer and truest test. The infamous Coldwarrior and Mrs Coldwarrior taste challenge is to take two shot glasses at room temperature and truly taste the vodka, roll it around. Room temperature reveals all of the pallet (there should be just about none) and unmasks what is masked by drinking the vodka frozen. It’s brutal. I can tell you several so called ‘high end’ vodka’s fail this test miserably and only those that pass get a spot in the booze cabinet.
Well, as you know, all great vodkas are always made from virginal grains grown in idyllic locations or from organic, free-range, non-gmo, cage free, fair-trade potatoes…right? Sure they are. Any snob will attest to that fact.
Not so fast! I went to the State Store to get some booze. PA controls the hard liquor retail here, but that isn’t a bad thing, they are one of the largest purchasers in the world and can do amazing things with that power. Anyway, on the shelf was Smithworks Vodka. I purchased it with the intention of destroying it the infamous Coldwarrior and Mrs Coldwarrior taste challenge. This vodka is made from corn, CORN! BLASPHEMY!!! HA! what do they know about vodka in Kansas anyway. We’ll dismiss this pretender quickly and use it to thin out orange juice and as the booze portion for Bloody Marys and then never buy it again! HA! That’ll show those CORN people what great vodka is!
Ladies and Gentlemen, Smithworks passed with flying colors. This is a great vodka. This is truly neutral gain spirit and is so perfectly smooth and no weird tastes.
Enjoy!
