Putting the pieces together on the Benghazi fiasco

It was all about funneling heavy weapons and personnel to our jihadi enemies.

Fox News: ‘Annex’ hit in Libya terror attack was CIA post, officials say

(h/t: lobo91)

The Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi targeted more than just a State Department consulate. One of the buildings hit was a covert CIA installation, U.S. officials told Fox News.

The now-abandoned American consulate in Benghazi was set a little more than a mile away from the CIA base. Up to this point, that separate base was described by administration officials only as a “safe house” or “annex” to the nearby consulate. In reality, CIA agents and other intelligence officials were operating out of Benghazi conducting delicate missions, including the search for over 20,000 deadly shoulder-fired missiles previously owned by Muammar Qaddafi’s Libyan forces.

The work they conducted to seize those deadly weapons, known as MANPADS, was part of a broader and public effort by the State Department to secure them. The major concern is those weapons could be used to bring down a commercial jet.

These officials added that the number of CIA operatives in Benghazi clearly outnumbered that of the diplomatic staff. It took two military cargo aircraft to lift everyone out of Benghazi when the fighting was over.

Both the CIA outpost and the consulate were attacked on Sept. 11. Two of the men killed, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, were hit by indirect fire while defending the intelligence post, not the consulate.

Daniel Greenfield: The Real Difference Between Islamic Extremists and Moderates

There were eras in human history whose great challenges lay in isolating chemical compounds, unlocking the structures of human genetic material and examining the hearts of dying stars. But the great challenge of our time is telling apart Muslim moderates and Muslim extremists.

Fly to Tripoli International Airport, take the Airport Highway into Tripoli, drive along the coast through all those towns and cities you heard about on the radio when the announcers were excitedly describing battles between the brave Libyan rebels and the despicable forces of the despot; Homs, Misrata, Sirte. Drive through the night while hugging the Mediterranean coastline until you reach Benghazi.

Benghazi is the city on whose behalf we went to war against Gaddafi. The imminent peril to Benghazi was the reason that Obama gave for the conflict. “We struck regime forces approaching Benghazi to save that city and the people within it,” he declared proudly. But the firepower that proved so potent in displacing and dismantling the Gaddafi regime could not protect Ambassador Stevens and the American consulate.

The Benghazi consulate’s own security forces had been stripped down to their bare essentials. Inside the compound, in their own barracks, were members of the February 17 Martyrs Brigade who were tasked with providing security for the consulate. The February 17 Martyrs Brigade is an Islamist militia affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. The attackers firing off RPGs into the compound were members of Ansar Al Sharia, a spinoff of the February 17 Martyrs Brigade, associated with Al Qaeda.

On diplomatic paper the moderate February 17 Martyrs Brigade and the extremist Ansar Al-Sharia had nothing in common. In reality, the differences between the two militias were mostly cosmetic and the Martyrs Brigade had been contacted ahead of time by an Al Qaeda politician and asked to stand down while the attack took place.

A month later and a thousand miles away, the moderate Free Syrian Army and the extremist Al Nusra Front captured a missile base in Syria. The base was stocked with the rather popular S-75 SAMs which may be a bit dated, but had still managed to shoot down an F-111 over Libya back in 1981 and would make short work of most commercial airliners.

The Free Syrian Army is the force that almost everyone agrees we should be supporting. They are almost certainly the fighters that Obama is conveying weapons and trainers to. And the Treasury Department approved a license to provide direct financial assistance to the FSA. The Al Nusra Front however is linked to Al Qaeda and waves the black flag of the Caliphate. It considers the United States an enemy of Islam.

The rebel spokesman for the local franchise of the Brave Syrian People ™ explained, “We don’t distinguish between the groups Al Nusra and the other militias, as long as everyone is working toward one goal of ousting the regime.” Our beloved moderates were making no distinction between themselves and the extremists. By helping the Free Syrian Army, we were really helping Al Qaeda.

The missile base attack was not the first time that the Free Syrian Army and the Al Nusra Front had worked together. The exploits of the Free Syrian Army were often actually the work of the experienced Jihadi fighters of Al Nusra. When gullible Westerners thought they were applauding the daring acts of freedom fighters, they were actually cheering the fanatical murderous frenzy of their own enemies.

The S-75s of Aleppo won’t pose much of a threat to us because the Syrian Air Force promptly swooped in and blew the missile base to bits, thereby probably saving a few hundred or a few thousand American lives—not that they did it for that reason. The real mission of the FSA and Al Nusra however had been to dismantle Syrian air defenses on its northern border clearing the way for a Turkish invasion of Syria…

Clare Lopez: Arms Flow to Syria May Be Behind Benghazi Cover-Up

The day after the big Obama-Romney debate, as media and politicians were engaging in the usual after-action assessment frenzy, some of the most important issues surrounding the September 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, remain unaddressed.

While it clearly matters (a lot) if and when the President told the truth to the American public about the terrorist nature of that attack and why the Department of State refused repeated pleas from its own diplomats in Libya for more and better security, the deeper, unaddressed issue is about the relationship of the U.S. government, Ambassador Christopher Stevens and the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya with Al Qaeda.

During the 2011 Libyan revolt against Muammar Qaddafi, reckless U.S. policy flung American forces and money into the conflict on the side of the rebels, who were known at the time to include Al Qaeda elements. Previously the number two official at the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli, Christopher Stevens was named as the official U.S. liaison to the Libyan opposition in March, 2011.

Stevens was tasked with helping to coordinate U.S. assistance to the rebels, whose top military commander, Abdelhakim Belhadj, was the leader of the Al Qaeda affiliate, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG). That means that Stevens was authorized by the U.S. Department of State and the Obama administration to aid and abet individuals and groups that were, at a minimum, allied ideologically with Al Qaeda, the jihadist terrorist organization that attacked the homeland on the first 9/11, the one that’s not supposed to exist anymore after the killing of its leader, Osama bin Laden, on May 2, 2011.

Although Belhadj reportedly now has moved on to Syria to help lead the fight against the Assad regime being waged by the Syrian Free Army (SFA), other Libyan fighters, who were formerly members of his LIFG and other Al Qaeda affiliates formed a new terror militia in Libya (and elsewhere) called Ansar al-Shariah (Supporters of Sharia/Islamic Law).

According to an August, 2012 report from the Library of Congress and the Kronos organization, “Al-Qaeda in Libya: A Profile,” Ansar al-Shariah is an Al Qaeda franchise operation, established in Libya with the assistance of senior Al Qaeda operatives dispatched from Pakistan specifically to supervise the set up of a new clandestine Al Qaeda network in Libya that would refrain from using the Al Qaeda name.

The Derna, Libya Ansar al-Shariah cell is led by a former GITMO detainee named Sufian Ben Qhumu. The September 11, 2012 attack on the Benghazi consulate compound that killed Ambassador Stevens, his staffer Sean Smith and the two Navy SEALs was directed and led by Ansar al-Shariah.

One of the key unanswered, even unasked, questions about the U.S. and Ambassador Stevens relationship with Abdelhakim Belhadj concerns not so much the 2011 period of the Libyan revolt, but rather what followed. Was Ambassador Stevens still in touch with Belhadj and/or other Al Qaeda-linked figures even after Belhadj traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, in November, 2011 to make contact with the Syrian Free Army?

According to August, 2012 reports leaked to the media, sometime earlier in 2012, President Obama signed an intelligence finding to permit the CIA and other US government agencies to provide support to the Syrian rebels, whose ranks are reported to be dominated by Al Qaeda, the Muslim Brotherhood and other jihadist fighters who already are supported by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and other jihadist regimes. Was Belhadj a conduit for U.S. support, perhaps via Turkey?

It might be recalled that, according to the Department of State’s transcript of a October 9, 2012 telephone conference call held to brief reporters on what happened in Benghazi, the final meeting that Ambassador Stevens held the night of September 11, 2012 before the attack began was with a Turkish diplomat.

Was that the meeting that was so important that the ambassador felt compelled to slip into Al Qaeda-held Benghazi on the anniversary of the original 9/11 attacks, knowing that Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri had called for revenge for the killing of his Libyan deputy, Abu Yahya al-Libi, concerned that he might have been on an Al Qaeda hit list and fully aware that he was terribly exposed with completely inadequate security? Was Ambassador Stevens directing a weapons pipeline from Libya to the Syrian rebels with Turkish assistance?

As noted by at least one observant blogger, two buildings appear on the overhead image of the Benghazi consular compound that may be viewed behind State Department official Charlene Lamb during her October 10, 2012 Congressional testimony but were not mentioned at all in the October 9, 2012 briefing mentioned above. Might these two warehouse-like buildings be storage facilities for Libyan weapons either bought back or otherwise collected prior to onward shipment?

The New York Times reported in July, 2012 that CIA officers were operating out of southern Turkey to help channel weapons to fighters supposedly not allied with Al Qaeda or other terrorist groups. In a October 14 piece, though, the Times asserted flatly that “Most of the arms shipped at the behest of Saudi Arabia and Qatar to supply Syrian rebel groups fighting the government of Bashar al-Assad are going to hard-line Islamic jihadists, and not the more secular opposition groups…” And while U.S. officials continue to stick to claims that they are not providing arms directly to the Syrian rebels, but only channeling weapons that come from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, reports that those rebels now have surface-to-air missiles call to mind the thousands of such weapons looted from Muammar Qaddafi’s stockpiles during and after the revolt that ousted him in October 2011.

“We Were The Last Flag Flying, It Was Just A Matter Of Time.”

Political Cartoons by Glenn McCoy

Those chilling words were spoken by Lt. Col. Andy Wood yesterday Afternoon as an answer to a question concerning the disastrous results of Barack Obama’s dangerously naive foreign policy. He was asked why he believed a terrorist attack against our embassy in Benghazi was not only a possibility but indeed imminent. This was the revelation near the end of a long day in which the folly of the Obama Administration’s foreign policy failure was laid bare, for a shocked nation to glimpse for the first time. Imagine the depth of a situation where there would be a last flag flying. That situation, as of mid September, 2012, was the reality in Benghazi. Unfortunately for four American citizens, that last flag flying happened to be ours.

So why was ours the last flag flying in Libya? What events on the ground created a world where there were no other flags, when only a few months before, the country was relatively stable and safe to walk around in? In the fervor to accurately get to the bottom of why the Obama Administration flat out lied to the American People to cover its tracks, these one questions remain unasked. What chain of events occurred that insured that Libya had devolved to a point where mayhem became the only law of the land? What genius foreign policy was put into place that turned, what only four years previously had been a relatively cowed and quieted nation into a situation where an attack on our embassy was not only a possibility, but imminent? At least two dozen times a year I hear someone repeat the phrase, it’s not the crime, but the cover up that got so and so in trouble. They say this as if the politician in question just randomly decided to perpetrate a cover up one day simply because they had nothing else better to do with their time. Granted, given the distinguished list of dumb asses that we have sent to Washington D.C. over the years, that very well might often be the case. The Obama Administration’s cover up of the attacks on our embassies currently on going however do not fit into that category. (Watching the news this morning, I see that we get to add Yemen to the growing list of embassy trouble spots. What took them so long?) What they are covering up bears some serious scrutiny, even more than the idiotic attempts to cover it up. In a nut shell, Barack Obama was attempting to cover up the fact that ours, was the last flag flying, and that his electoral chances would be better served if nobody back home caught wind of that.

As much as my implied promise not to discuss the cover up in this article, there was one speech delivered by our President in particular during that part of our story that is pertinent to the disaster itself. While addressing the U.N., Barack Obama bemoaned the fact that someone in the United States had insulted Mohamed, and further went on to state that our nation, even with our First Amendment Rights, could not be left to the evil devices of those who would allow such an outrage. This was after a passage in the same speech where he claimed that our nation was founded on the concept that no religion would ever be denigrated or disparaged in any way.

In fact, our President, Constitutional Scholar that he is portrayed to be, has it exactly backwards. Our nation was founded on the principal that no religion would be safe from ridicule and or derision, provided there was ever a citizen who felt like doing so, Islam included. While I can almost believe that you may feel that this is an unrelated and irrelevant point, bear in mind that appeasement of the Muslim street is the defining cornerstone of the Obama Administration’s foreign policy. When you boil it all down, that really is the guiding principle behind everything our State Department has done from January of 2009 until now. From his Cairo speech to his grand apology tour, traveling the globe and telling the world that we Americans were arrogant and selfish, but that times had changed with his election, we now realize that the world is better off with out any one claiming the mantle of super power, blah, blah, blah. President Obama promised loudly and proudly that instead of projecting American strength, weakness and appeasement would now be the main exports from the Yanks.

So, we left some allies out to twist in the wind, or land under the admittedly crowded undercarriage of the Obama bus so to speak. Egypt, Tunisia, Bharain, Libya, Pakistan, and gosh knows who else, hard cheese for the leaders of those countries. While they weren’t all friends in the truest or even the figurative sense of the word, they were at least stable, better than the alternatives that replaced them, and not actively engaged in waging a jihad against us. Even Libya, who was once one of the worst offenders had taken notice of the events in Iraq in 2003 and stopped funding and participating in terrorism. While the leaders of these nation states were brutish dictators who had deserved reputations for dealing cruelly with subversive elements of their citizenry, what many of us from the West failed to realize was that brutishness was in fact the only possible way in which to effectively deal with Muslim Extremists hell bent on inflicting their own world domination. After all, these brutish rulers had the advantage of harsh experience on their side, an understanding of the situation that we completely lacked. Today of course, that has all evaporated. As it turns out, the Arab Spring, just like many of us predicted in 2010, would turn out to be a disaster that paralleled Iran of 1978, but would be a hundred times as terrible in scope. Today, that prediction is a reality. What’s worse, at least two of those nations mentioned above have nuclear weapons. So Iran, while we all agree should never be allowed to have nukes, is suddenly late to the party. Believe me, it makes no difference in the long run if either the Wahhabists, Sunnis, Sufists, Mahdavists, Kharijists, Ibadis, or Salafists, get their hands on a nuclear device before those insane Shiites, the end results will be every bit as devastating.

The Obama world view told us that we were the cause of all the evil that happened around the globe, rather than what some of us knew to be the truth, which is that we were the solution to those evils. We, here in America were not arrogant, but the beacon of freedom that protected the weak from the tyranny of the tin pot dictators who fancied themselves to be above the natural rights that all people are born with. In short, we were the reason that this type of violence has not been even more prevalent in that part of the world for at least the last 60 years. The beliefs of the anti-colonialists have once again been proven wrong, and once again in dramatic while simultaneously disastrous fashion. How many times must Neville Chamberlain return to England and announce, “peace in our time,” before we stop listening to that idiot. Apparently, even though we have all heard the phrase about refusal to learn from history etc., we still feel the need to elect a Neville Chamberlain think-a-like President once every generation. Not even Bill Clinton was this neglectful of our national security interests while President, and he used the office almost exclusively as a ploy to pick up chicks.

As awful as all of that was, and it does not even delve into the darker side of things, such as leaking information to our enemies as to who should be shot down in a helicopter so as to avenge the Bin Laden raid, we still aren’t to the real crime yet. So how about we get there now? In the Obama world view, he believed that we could best get along with our host nations by not showing any form of force which might be construed as offensive to the indigenous population. Therefore, we had no embassy security, at least not American security. Instead, we hired the locals to provide our protection. When our people on the ground there could see that this was about to end in disaster, they requested help from the State Department, and were denied. In short, the crime was that Barack Obama bet the lives of our foreign diplomats on his oft provably false premise that appeasement would eventually work. While appeasement may work out well for Patrick Stewart on Star Trek, it does not do so well in the world of reality. When the bet came up snake eyes, the decision was made to just allow those people to be murdered, rather than to risk anyone finding out our President was indeed not perfect, but wrong, only 8 weeks before an election. When it became evident that our embassies were about to fall, seeing as how the Obama foreign policy had fomented a world where ours was the only flag left flying, Barack Obama did some political calculus. “Darn the luck he probably told himself, it figures that the world would catch fire due exclusively to my negligent leadership just as I have this annoying election coming up. We can’t have Americans realizing that my genius has had some bumps in the road, like for example every bit of my belief system being proven laughably false, the failure in total of the Arab world to follow our lead and put down their own arms, or the failure of our enemies to suddenly respect us simply because we admitted that we have been maliciously pushing them around by not buckling under to their undeniably insane demands. We have to appear as though everything is peaceful at last, not a worry in the world any longer now that Barack Obama is in charge and has led us to the path of peaceful coexistence with our misunderstood Muslim neighbors.”

I wonder what the last thoughts of Ambassador Stevens were. Was he thinking about how President Obama simply sacrificed his, and three other American lives as a part of that political calculus? Was he waxing philosophical about the denied requests for any type of security to protect him during the imminent terrorist attacks that he had repeatedly warned his superiors were coming, and coming soon? Did he realize that his life was nothing more than a political, “speed bump,” to our Commander in Chief, (Obama’s words, not mine,) someone to be sacrificed for the purpose of hiding the effects of a moronic foreign policy? Life is cheap to our President. There is no price too steep for the infliction of his ideology upon the rest of us, and that is the real crime. The Congressional hearings, while necessary, are only a side show, a distraction from the real tragedy. The fact that ours was the only flag left flying, and our President made certain that there would be no one to defend her.

Surprise! Projecting American Weakness Works No Better In 2012 Than In 1980.

Amateur photograph of the body of Ambassador Chris Stevens posted to ahram.org.eg

This is an amateur photograph of the body of our former U.S. ambassador, Chris Stephens, to Libya, being dragged through the streets of Benghazi. Notice how respectfully our dead are treated by the Jihadists.

Next, we have some lovely video, courtesy of Memri, taken outside one of our embassies in an Islamic nation. Before you ask, this is not the American Embassy in Tehran circa 1979. It is our Embassy in Cairo from yesterday.

That Barack Obama was touted by anybody as being qualified, even when compared to, gasp, Sarah Palin, for the Presidency is a stinging indictment not just upon those who posited that now disproven theory, but upon the imbecilic members of the media who reported the false credentials without so much as a hint of curiosity. This foreign policy disaster is the direct result of the decisions made by the Obama White House and State Department. What’s even more to the point is that it should come as a surprise to no one. This policy of projecting American weakness abroad and subordinating our strength to the vile and corrupt influences of the United Nations was after all, one of two Obama campaign promises that did not have an expiration date. (The other being his promise to destroy ability to produce electricity via coal.)

Nothing, in terms of our foreign policy arena, could be worse for America and Americans than the events of the last 4 years. What’s worse than that, it does not appear that Barack Obama or Joe Biden have learned anything. The foreign policy agenda proffered by Team Zero going forward for a possible second term is, more of the same. More apologies to our enemies and more arm twisting for our allies. More snubs for the likes of Britain, Poland, and Israel, with more incentives for the Muslim Brotherhood to grab even more expansive bases of power through out the Middle East. I find it both laughable and sad that foreign policy is considered one of the Team Obama strengths for this year’s Presidential Election. Laughable that anyone would think it, sad that our Press is reporting this in a serious non sarcastic manner.

Today, just as in 1979, laying siege to one of our embassies over seas is an act of war. Mitt Romney recognizes this, Sarah Palin recognized it in 2008, and most Americans today recognize it as well. This act was taken, and here is the key point, because the Jihadists do not take our President and his kumbayah school of foreign policy seriously, even slightly. Their calculation is that hand wringing and further apologies will be the only reaction to it, with the possibility of a cruise missile exploding by its lonesome in the desert somewhere.

For anyone who doubts that we are in a war with radical Islam, here they are, radical Islamists, once again in their own words telling us that we are.

As I am writing this, I could not help but notice that the President is even now explaining how Libyan forces tried to fight off the attack on our embassy there, and that this is not the fault of treating our enemies as respected long time friends. It should also be remembered that when our ambassador was taken somewhere safe and still living, by those very same Libyan allies who were fighting by our side, they were the ones who ratted out his position  and ended up handing him over.

So, here it is, in its full banality, the video that was blamed for the newest violent temper tantrum occurring throughout all of North Africa. Warning, getting through this idiotic piece of, for lack of a better word, cinematography, may prove to be a difficult endeavor. I personally only lasted 6 minutes.

Rodan Update: Here is Romney’s press conference where he refuses to make excuses for the attacks on the US embassy in Cairo and the killing of our ambassador in Benghazi.

Obama didn’t even take questions at his press conference. Kudos to Mitt Romney for standing his ground.
