Lyrics (from “Come and See” Icons):

Troparion & Kontakion

Christ is risen from the dead! Trampling down death by death! And upon those in the tombs, bestowing Life!

Thou didst descend into the tomb, O Immortal. Thou didst destroy the power of death. In victory didst Thou arise, O Christ God, proclaiming “Rejoice” to the myrrh-bearing women, granting peace to Thy Apostles, and bestowing resurrection on the fallen.

“This is the Chosen and Holy Day, the Feasts of Feasts,” Easter or Pascha, the Passover of Our Lord Jesus Christ from death to life! This icon shows Christ standing over the broken gates of hell in the form of a Cross, pulling out Adam and Eve.

The Angel Cried

From the YouTube description:

St. Barnabas Orthodox Church of Costa Mesa CA. The Choir is singing “The Angel Cried”. The choir is under the direction of Yumi Larsen. It is the last time they will sing this for 2010 as this was the last wedding at the church for the year. It is a long time until Pascha 2011!!!

Lyrics:

The Angel cried to the Lady full of grace:
Rejoice, rejoice O pure Virgin!
Again, I say rejoice! Your son is risen
from his three days in the tomb.
With himself he has raised all the dead.
Rejoice, rejoice O ye people”
Shine, Shine! Shine O new Jerusalem
The Glory of the Lord has shown on you
Exult now, exult and be glad O Sion.
Be radiant, O Theotokos, in the Resurrection
the Resurrection of your Son!

One Easter Egg

A Kosovo Serb peels an Easter egg during an Orthodox Easter service in a fire-gutted Serbian church, burned in 2004 by ethnic Albanians, in Mitrovica, 40 kilometres (30 miles) north of the Kosovo capital Pristina, April 5, 2010.

History of the Easter Egg:

The earliest Christian history of the Easter egg tradition is found approximately 50 years after Jesus’ resurrection. Bright red-colored eggs were simply exchanged as gifts as a symbol of continuing life and Christ’s resurrection. The red color was an intentional Christian tradition commemorating the blood of Christ. The red Easter eggs in Christian history were originally used when two friends met on Easter day. The two friends would know to tap their eggs together and one would greet the other with the words, “Christ is Risen!” and the other would respond, “Christ is Risen Indeed!” Then the eggs were eaten in fellowship.

In the Reformation years, the church instituted the custom of breaking the Lenten fast with hard-boiled eggs. The eggs were brought to the Easter morning service, and the priest blessed them saying, “Lord, bless these eggs as a wholesome substance, eaten in thankfulness on account of the resurrection of our Lord.”

11 YR OLD GIRL’S PASSIONATE WORDS DURING HOLY PASCHA

Many people don’t know the meaning of Kosovo. It is not just a piece of land or a geographic area.

Kosovo is small and yet so large. There is enough place for everyone because the Lord has bestowed this holy land upon all people. It is small, but it’s as precious as a jewel. It’s as tiny as the sip of fresh water without which you cannot last, as an air without which you cannot breathe, and it’s as large as the sun which warms the whole world with the warmness of its love. It’s as huge as the rock which stands firmly and unbreakably, because Kosovo’s roots have grown deep in the earth since the ancient times, and those roots were set by our ancestors and by the saints. Our monasteries, which are pride and joy of every Serb, are witnesses of that. Our Lord has sanctified Kosovo and therefore we call it the Serbian Jerusalem. Kosovo people are full of love and faith for its monasteries and for all the people. We have already demonstrated that love to our people who come and visit us and who try hard that at least for a moment we forget what we have gone through and the suffering we have so far endured.

But when they leave, we remain with the same sorrow yet showing them that the Serbian faith and love is the strongest. It has always been like that and it will remain so in the future. Kosovo is the symbol of the Serbian faith, the symbol of all Serbs. People in Kosovo always pray in monasteries that the Lord may protect each and every Serb. In Kosovo sunshine is the brightest and flowers are the prettiest. The most beautiful flower is the Kosovo peony because it has grown to become the symbol of Kosovo and of the Kosovo Battle. Many of our saints had walked through Kosovo: Prince Lazar, Emperor Dusan, Stephen of Decani and many saints who left plenty of wealth behind them.

The greatest wealth are the monasteries from 12th, 13th and 14th century. They had left us the Christian faith and had spread the Christianity. Kosovo is beautiful because it’s permeated with the beauty of its monasteries. The entire Kosovo smells on incense, love and hope. It’s a great miracle that even in these difficult moments Kosovo still stands proudly. They can take away Kosovo from us but they will never take the Christian faith of Kosovo, our blood and our Kosovo heart, because that cannot take roots in the chests of enemies. That cannot be either planted or take roots – it is given by the Lord and glory to Him. Thank God I’m a Christian and have a cross on my forehead. So does all of you who read this.

These words that I have written are insufficient and I’m afraid that I have missed a lot, because there are no words which could describe our Holy Kosovo, but the Lord will reveal them to everyone and thank Him for sending me these words written for you.

Resurrection Service To Be Broadcast Live In US And Europe

Apr 21, 2011

Archbishop Demetrios of America Will Proclaim the Resurrection at St. Nicholas Church in Flushing, NY

NEW YORK – The Orthodox Pascha (Easter) will be celebrated this Sunday April 24.

This year, as last year, the Orthodox Pascha date coincides with the celebration of the Western Easter. Orthodox faithful flock churches across the country for the solemn services of Holy Week in anticipation of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection.

This year, on Holy Saturday evening, Archbishop Demetrios, the Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in America will proclaim the Resurrection at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas in Flushing, N.Y., one of the largest parishes of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese.

The Resurrection Service will begin with Matins at 11 p.m. Shortly before midnight, the church will be completely darkened and the Archbishop will come forth carrying a white candle, chanting, Come; Receive the Light, the Light of the Resurrection. The light will be passed to the congregation, slowly filling the darkness with warm candlelight until the Church is ablaze with its glow. A procession of altar boys, choir, chanters and clergy joined by all the faithful will move outdoors where the Gospel proclaiming the Resurrection of Christ will be read. At exactly midnight the Archbishop will proclaim the triumphant hymn Christos Anesti, Christ is Risen which will be echoed and joyously sung many times by the faithful.

The service of the Resurrection and the Divine Liturgy, which will follow, will be televised live via satellite to the United States and Europe. The program will be available domestically via satellite (see coordinates below) and will be carried live in the U.S. from 11:45 p.m. to (Sunday) 2:00 a.m. (Eastern US Time) by ANTENNA SAT and ERT-WORLD. Check your local provider for channel numbers.
