This morning we witness the rise of the Renaissance, this lecture is on ‘the Age of Discovery’ next will be on ‘the New World’…so get out your Ren and Ref texts, a coffee and lets get schooled.

 

Professor Eugen Weber continues in:

25. The Renaissance and the Age of Discovery
Renaissance humanists made man “the measure of all things.” Europe was possessed by a new passion for knowledge. Innovation advances and the glory of Man replaces ‘Ora et Labora’; the Renaissance Humanists look as far back as ancient Greece and Rome. Revival of the Classics creates the Humanities; The study of the virtuous life and how it should be led.

Saturday Lecture Series: The National Monarchies

Today we close out the Middle Ages and set the stage for the Renaissance in Europe. Professor Eugen Weber continues in:

24. The National Monarchies
A new urban middle class emerged, while dynastic marriages established centralized monarchies.

 

Dante, Papal Schisms, Jean D’Arc, and the rise of commerce/middle class and the city state pulls power from the landed gentry. The old feudal order is being replaced. From this chaos and change, the national monarchies are strengthened at the cost of the local barons. The modern map of Europe that we all can recognize is drawn in this time.
