Mutallab without passport?

This will be a major embarrassment for “the system worked” Napolitano if true. According to this report in the Detroit Metro, a couple of American attorneys on the flight overheard the following:

Haskell said he and his wife were sitting on the ground near their boarding gate in Amsterdam, which is when they saw Mutallab approach the gate with an unidentified man.
[…]
While Mutallab was poorly dressed, his friend was dressed in an expensive suit, Haskell said. He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could board without a passport. “The guy said, ‘He’s from Sudan and we do this all the time.’”
Mutallab is Nigerian. Haskell believes the man may have been trying to garner sympathy for Mutallab’s lack of documents by portraying him as a Sudanese refugee.
The ticket agent referred Mutallab and his companion to her manager down the hall, and Haskell didn’t see Mutallab again until after he allegedly tried to detonate an explosive on the plane.
Like all of you, I’m awaiting official confirmation or denial, but these sound like credible sources, and this sounds like an incredible FUBAR. The only thing that saved that airplane and the people aboard it is the fact that Allah was out back with a goat when this guy needed his help. No thanks to Homeland Security.

Napolitano: “The system worked”

This is either the most incredible act of chutzpah or ignorance from this administration yet.

From Politico: Napolitano: “The system worked”

It’s a short article, so I’ll quote the whole thing:

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the thwarting of the attempt to blow up the Amsterdam-Detroit flight this week demonstrated that “the system worked.”

Asked by CNN’s Candy Crowley on “State of the Union” how that could be possible when the young Nigerian who sought to set off the bomb was able to smuggle explosive liquid onto the flight, Napolitano responded: “We’re asking the same questions.”

Napolitano added that there was “no suggestion that [the bomber] was improperly screened.”

And what “system” is this? Individual initiative of a passenger? Incompetence of a jihadi?

And what precisely does that last sentence mean? That everything is hunky-dorey because he wasn’t profiled?

Napolitano needs to meet the bus. It’s bad enough when you’re ideologically blinkered, but she’s a general purpose moron on top of it.

Blow to LGF: DHS pulls report citing Veterans as a threat

by Phantom Ace ( 116 Comments › )

In a big blow to LGF and other progressive blogs, the Department of Homeland Security has withdrawn the DHS report that cited veterans (among others) as a threat to our security. Everyone knew this report calling Rightwingers a threat and veterans potential terrorists was bogus. This was a political report and it blew up in Janet Napolitano’s face.

Report citing veteran extremism is pulled

A contentious “Rightwing Extremism” report that warned of military veterans as possible recruits for terrorist attacks against the U.S. was not authorized, has been withdrawn and is being rewritten, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told Capitol Hill lawmakers.

“The wheels came off the wagon because the vetting process was not followed,” Ms. Napolitano told the House Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday.

“The report is no longer out there,” she said. “An employee sent it out without authorization.”

The report was shared with state and local law enforcement officials nationwide via the department’s internal Web site on April 7, angering Republican lawmakers and military veterans who said it unfairly stereotyped veterans.

Daily Kos, LGF and Think Progress all have egg on their faces. If this was paranoia on the part of Conservatives/Libertarians/Populists why would DHS withdraw it? Don’t expect the Left to aplogize for this as they know look like fools. Kid Icarus’ wings keep melting and he keeps falling.

Update: LGF is in denial over this. They are still claiming the report is accurate, even though it is being withdrawn.

DHS to Replace ‘Right Wing Extremism’ Report

Politics | Thu, May 14, 2009 at 8:36:34 am PDT

After weeks of political grandstanding and misguided ranting from bloggers and talk show hosts over the DHS report on “right wing extremism,” Janet Napolitano announced yesterday that the DHS has removed the report from their websites: Napolitano defends security budget, extremism report.

Napolitano, testifying before the House appropriations sub-committee on the agency’s budget, told lawmakers the report was designed for “situational awareness” and not targeting purposes.

Grilled by Texas representative John Carter on whether the DHS had clearly withdrawn its report for consideration by law enforcement officials, Napolitano said it had been removed from the DHS’s intel websites and is “in the process of being replaced … in a much more precise fashion.”

And you can bet that no matter how “precise” the new report may be, it will provoke another round of screaming.

Asked repeatedly by Illinois lawmaker Mark Kirk whether anyone was fired over the incident, Napolitano said “appropriate personnel action has and will be taken,” though she did not say anyone was removed.

In the report, which was not intended for public consumption, “there was no intent of accusing our veterans of being un-American,” Napolitano assured. “What there was,” she said, “was an understanding that veterans are sometimes targeted for recruitment — that is an assessment.”

The Pentagon gives instruction to its own commanders about the same phenomenon, the secretary added.

Kid Icarus refuses to admit he was wrong. What else is new!
