While the American media and elites continue their Middle east obsession, a violent war is raging close to home. Since Mexican President Felipe Calderon declared war on the cartels, 34, 612 Mexicans who were mostly civilians have died. The Mexican media has glorified the lifestyle of the Narco Cartels and even reported favorably on them. One of the factors was the intimidation by the cartels. Now the Mexican Media has decided to make a stand and agree to to glorify them.
Newspapers and broadcasters agreed not to glorify drug traffickers or publish cartel propaganda.
They also promised joint action to protect journalists, at least 20 of whom have been killed since 2006.
The accord defends the media’s right to criticise Mexican government policy and actions in the drugs conflict.
More than 40 media groups, which between them own over 700 television networks, radio stations and newspapers, signed the agreement at a ceremony in Mexico City.
They should have done this years ago. It’s a shame our media doesn’t report the chaos in Mexico. I’m more worried about that then Libya. The Mexico conflict effects us here in the US. This should be our top concern.
