How using Social media got the Media’s attention on The Gosnell case

Many on the political Right are ostriches when it comes to the power of OFA’s use of social media to promote their propaganda. Many think OFA is a fluke and once Obama is gone, that the GOP will be unstoppable in Presidential elections. This is a delusional worldview not based on reality. The latest example about the power of social media actually comes from the Right.

The media had a blackout on the the Kermit Gosnell case. Conservatives went on Twitter and began a grass roots campaign for media action. Lat week, Tweets were directed at reporters to get their attention. By the end of the week, the media admits they overlooked the story and started covering. This was a case of how grassroots on the Right used social media to get attention to a story. The media was forced to cover it.

If there were an award for Most Constructive Shaming of the News Media, the clear winner would be Kirsten Powers, the brave Fox News pundit and Daily Beast columnist. Last Thursday, she called out the mainstream media for failing to adequately report on the ongoing trial of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortionist who is charged with murdering seven newborn infants and a patient seeking an abortion. Powers’s USA Today piece provoked an instant response from many sheepish journalists.

Megan McArdle of the Daily Beast acknowledged she “should have” written about the “horror Doc’s” clinic. The Washington Post made the stunning admission that “we should have sent a reporter sooner.” Dylan Beers, Politico’s media reporter, flatly stated that “Gosnell should be front-page, top-of-the-hour news by prime time tonight.” Jeffrey Goldberg, a Bloomberg View columnist, concluded, “It’s remarkable that it took this long.”

Indeed, the silence had been stunning since the Gosnell trial began back on March 18. No mention of the story at all on ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, NPR, or MSNBC, and no front-page stories in any major paper. National Review, The Weekly Standard, Breitbart.com, and Michelle Malkin, on the other hand, provided early and consistent coverage. J. D. Mullane, the columnist for the Bucks County Courier Times who has been a tiger on the story, reported last week what he found in the courtroom: In the entire 40-seat section reserved for the media, he was the only one present. A couple of local journos were scattered elsewhere around the courtroom.

The Kermit Gosnell case shows that Conservatives using social media can match the Left. Now if only the Right had its version of OFA. That could be a difference maker.

How the NRA defeated OFA

(NRA Social Media Ad)

Organizing For America is the most formidable electoral machine ever assembled in American political history. Their use of behavioral scientists allows them to manipulate target groups. They run circles around Republicans and Conservatives through the use of social media and micro-targeting. OFA is on the verge of creating permanent one party rule in America. But for once, they met their match.

After the Newtown massacres, the fake god-king was out demonizing guns. OFA did its usual propaganda based attacks using emotional imagery. But unlike the Republican Party, The National Rifle Association is disciplined and well organized. Unlike the GOP, it is very popular with Americans and is viewed as fighting for people’s rights. They also have hired their own team of behavioral scientists and data-miners. They were able to destroy OFA’s emotional appeal with cold hard facts. The result was that as of this writing, the NRA has gotten the better of OFA.

Obama for America’s post-election transformation into the grassroots lobbying group Organizing for Action (OFA) was supposed to provide the political heft (and supersized bank account) President Obama would need to implement his sweeping second-term agenda. So far, however, efforts to translate OFA’s success in turning out support for its candidate into generating support for his actual policies have thoroughly failed to impress.

Take gun control. In the months since the tragic shooting in Newtown, Conn., the president has waged an aggressive campaign to implement stricter gun-control policies. He concluded his State of the Union address with a rousing appeal for congressional action — “The families of Newtown deserve a vote” — and continues to implore the American people: “Shame on us if we forget.” OFA, though legally prohibited from coordinating with the White House, has thrown its full weight behind the effort.

[….]

NRA president David Keene concurs. “They’re learning that when you put together something like they did for Obama, it’s hard to translate that into other activities,” he tells National Review Online. “They believed they had put together this machinery that they could use for darn near anything, and that just wasn’t true.”

[….]

The specific nature of the gun-control debate makes Obama’s and OFA’s challenge all the more difficult. Gun-control advocates will likely never be able to match the natural enthusiasm that exists in the pro-gun segment of the population, particularly when the latter finds itself on the defensive. “The difference between OFA and the NRA is that the NRA has millions of members who are passionately focused on the issue of Second Amendment rights, whereas Obama supporters are a much broader and much shallower pool of support for a specific person,” says Collegio.

This is just like the Nazis biting off more than they can chew by attacking Soviet, Russia. OFA thought it was invincible because it runs circles around the paraplegic like Republican Party. But when confronted by a well disciplined opponent with the resources to match it, OFA failed.

The NRA proved OFA can be beaten. Whether the Republican Party of Conservatives in general will study this defeat is another matter. In that regards to the latter, I am not hopeful. I salute the NRA for defeating this evil organization.

Data Mining

Blogmocracy in Action

datamining

A discussion occurred on the last BlogMocRadio about Data Mining, what is it and how is it used.

Let me start with the side that my Paycheck Continuation Program (PCP) is involved with on a daily basis, Just In Time Inventory or JITI.  This is Data Mining at its’ finest!

Ever walked into almost any commercial enterprise and seen employees running around with hand held Bar Code Scanners, ever had you purchase rang up by passing over or under a scanner and then paid for said purchase with a Credit or Debit Card!  Answer yes to any of those and you have been data mined!  Mind you that most US commercial enterprises (Notable exceptions for Google, Microshaft and anything associated with GE) use this data to tailor what they carry in a given region, when and how much they order and what demographics (remember the cards) are buying their goods.

Each store involved has what most call an In Store Processor (ISP).  Now the ISP could be called an Idiot Savant of computers as it includes a full Commercial Transactions Node (think ATM at your Bank) and a continuous communications node to wherever the company’s Master Inventory Control Point (MICP) is.  I know where most of them are but have this little thing called Confidentiality Agreements (CA)  in place here.

All decisions with the (sometimes) exception of Local Hiring and Firing are made at the MICP.  The individual stores do what they are told!  Ever walked into a chain store and found something on sale, unadvertised over night?  That item is not selling well in your region and the MICP projects a need for that shelf space!  Better to sell it at reduced price or even a small loss compared to having to dispose of it or ship it back!  Many chains have associated chains where the High Dollar but popular items that are fixing to go “Out of Style” are cross-shipped to and sold as Discount!  Don’t ask me to name names, see CA above.

All of these methods as well as regional and demographic patterns are used to determine what to purchase, when to purchase, when to ship and get it to the store just as it will sell!  Important here also is how much an individual store can be expected to sell!

This Boys and Girls is how beneficial Commercial Data Mining works.  Now let us translate this to the Political Realm!

First you need a Sugar Daddy to buy you a Master Control Point (MCP) and all the Internet bandwidth you need.  Enter George Soros and his endless bag of money in cooperation with an outfit not legally associated with a Political Party, let’s call it Organizing for America (OFA) just as something to use OK?

Now your MCP does not need a huge investment (Hell, I have four machines in my house that could host it) mostly a good sized Server Grade machine and lots of Network Storage (NS).  NS is desired as we are going to store and transmit lots of data and NS can be expanded as needed cheaply and with a minimum of fuss!  What it really must have is damn good data management software and a rock solid communications link!  Who are we going to talk to?

How about the community leaders in every local group who is going to agree with what we want to do.  Here is where legally a Political party can become involved as they are just one little communications node in our dispersed network.  What do these nodes need to function? A cheap piece of secure communications software, that’s it. With a computer that they probably already have and the cheap ass software they are now a functional node in our huge data mining operation!

Next we send from the MCP what information we want like say names and voting patterns!  We could also ask for anything any prominent person has ever done stupid.  Or even better how about anything that person has ever said or done that could be twisted out of context to make them LOOK stupid or evil.

Next set of marching orders from the MCP is “What to Say and When!”  Thus at say 1:00 PM all nodes start saying the exact same thing at the exact same time!  Who the hell cares if it is true or accurate!

What then occurs in large portions of our modern society is called Information Waterfall.  Many, many people will hear it and the assumption becomes that because everyone and everybody is saying the same thing “It Must Be True!”

This is the danger of the Distributed Network more so that Inbound Data Mining, the phenomenon of Outbound Data Mining (ODM)!

ODM is the weapon that OFA is trying to use!  Any piece of dirt or innuendo that can be found or developed against a political enemy is brought in processed and distributed to all the nodes in a matter of minutes  and no one on our side has the damn brains to start using this power!

The problem with this model is that much of the control of information and efforts is shifted away from the personalities running the operation to the troops running the nodes.  On the Progressive left that is no problem as they are united in thought and deed!  Not so on the Right!

Neocons, Socons, Fiscons, PaulBots and just plain “Do It My Way” country club Republicans divide the Right better than Odumbbutt ever could.  Each and everyone of these groups that launches and kind of effort wants to Keep Control!

If only we could get together and find the points we agree on build that into our MCP software as Priority’s and build our own Bi-Directional Data Mining effort because until we do we will always be one step behind OFA!

Conservative Geeks look to counter OFA

OFAafter

Organizing For Action is the key to the Progressive machine and Obama’s 2012 re-election. Their tactics of data-mining and behavioral analysis made the difference in the election. The Republican Party has not yet grasped the nature of what they are up against. Some young Conservative techies seek to create an answer to OFA.

Silicon Valley and the GOP — together at last?

That may seem like a peculiar proposition given all the public soul-searching and dirge-singing since Election Day over the digital failure of Republicans in modern campaigning.

But a blast of cheerful California sunshine may be starting to light the way in the form of an underground gang of young, conservative hackers in the Valley assembling via a communal Google Document to brainstorm about what they can do to save the party from the clutches of tech-phobic leaders.

“There’s this myth that there aren’t any Republicans out here who are willing to drop everything to help the way Democratic hackers have,” said Aaron Ginn, who with Garrett Johnson have dubbed their nascent brain trust the Republican Stealth Mob. “We’re out here, and we want to help.”
[….]

What makes this gang different from the myriad of existing GOP digital strategy firms with hanging shingles in Washington is that the Silicon Valley bunch isn’t in it for the money and they’re not as interested in political gamesmanship as they are in creating useful and usable campaign tools. They look upon the much-vaunted Obama tech team not with contempt but with admiration over its impressive sites, sleek apps and intuitive systems.

[….]

Troubles began almost immediately. He learned that the campaign’s online home, MittRomney.com, was built on an archaic architecture that required the entire site to be updated every time most changes were made. That made the site more prone to crashing and made rapid response more cumbersome, as evidenced by the lag of days before the front of the site touted Romney’s triumph in the first presidential debate.

He said his offer to re-code the site was turned down. He had been hired to manage and grow something called MyMitt, a little-used program intended to help rank-and-file volunteers raise money. MyMitt was clunky and unpleasant, Ginn said, so he laid out an $80,000 proposal to bring in four Republican computer engineers to build something new. The campaign at first was encouraging but then decided after a week to nix it.

These Conservative techies ran up against the Consultant Class. Too many GOP Consultants, like the despicable Karl Rove, refuse to realize the nature of what they are up against. I can not emphasize too much that OFA is the most formidable electoral machine ever assembled.

It’s not the Economy or Demographics , it’s Technology stupid!
