NORWICH, CT (WFSB) –

A cat is recovering after being shot through the chest with an arrow in Norwich Monday evening.

Mayor Peter Nystrom located the cat, who is being called Elliot, in the area of Gates Road.

“He wasn’t moving,” Nystrom said. “We weren’t sure he was alive at first but then her daughter came in and got down on the deck with him and that just broke your heart watching.”

Elliot was located by his owner’s home and had been missing for two days. Nystrom immediately called the animal control officer, who was able to rush the cat to the Friends Animal Hospital in Norwich.

Veterinarians at Friends Animal Hospital were able to remove the arrow.

“It didn’t hit anything major, which is unbelievable. It was inches away,” said Lona Harrelle, who is the co-owner of All Friends Animal Hospital. “Inches away from hitting his heart, his lungs.”

Elliot, who may have long-term nerve damage, was able to take his first steps since the accident on Tuesday.

“He didn’t once try to bite or act vicious,” Harrelle said. “And I wouldn’t have blamed him. He’s been in a lot of pain. But he’s been just like this the whole time.”

Doctors said they need more time to see if the nerve damage will be permanent. Either way, the goal is to get Elliot home by the end of this week.

Nystrom personally paid for Elliot’s expenses, officials with Friends Animal Hospital stated.

Cats (felids) are obligate carnivores. That means cats must have meat to live. Cats don’t need grain products, sugars, or starches.

Ingredients are listed by pre-cooked weight. When buying cat food, make sure that meat, poultry, or seafood (and not just by-products) are high up on the list.
