The Fast And Furious Assault On The Second Amendment

by Flyovercountry ( 105 Comments › )

For years, we have been inundated with propaganda, from many different sources, claiming that our constitutional right to keep and bear arms is causing violent crime. Never mind that there is not a single credible study, statistical or otherwise which shows any kind of connection between the Second Amendment and an increase in violent crime rates. Think logically for just one moment, if a criminal does what they do because of their complete disregard for obeying the law, why would they choose to obey gun laws? The only thing gun bans have accomplished in major American cities over the last half century, has been the loss of control of urban areas to roving gangs of armed thugs. Throughout all of this, we conservatives have been told adnauseaum that our views of upholding the constitution as written, our belief in limited government which is accountable to the populace which elects them to power is both radical and the reason for the violence in our society. Somehow, the Tea Parties and the supporters of same were now responsible for all gun violence in the country. I am still waiting for the left half of the country to apologize to me for calling me a murderer in the wake of the Representative Giffords shooting. Even a full week after it was learned beyond any doubt that Gerald Loughner was indeed a registered Democrat and committed leftist, I still had people commenting to my facebook profile that it was us conservatives, and more specifically the Tea Parties which were complicit in the day’s horrific events. Of course, in all of this finger pointing, it is never mentioned that the useless sheriff’s deputy was providing security for the event, unarmed. Had the peace officer been armed, as most officers of the law in this country are, he might have been able to prevent a second round from being fired. Maybe Barack Obama can expand the courageous restraint medal to include Puma County Sheriff’s Deputies as well. What finally stopped Loughner’s rampage that day? Why it was an armed private citizen who ran to the scene from two blocks away.

Something was said over the weekend, which brought this all back to me. It seems, the new Police Chief in Chicago will be getting an early start on where to place the blame for his failure, (which didn’t even have the chance to materialize yet,) on Sarah Palin’s Moose Hunting activities on her Alaskan life Reality Show. It seems that people in his last town, Newark New Jersey, somehow saw Governor Palin on T.V., hunting, and decided to vent their frustration by inexplicably shooting each other. For those following along, Phase 1: watch former Alaskan Governor on T.V., phase 2: ?, Phase 3: shoot your neighbors.

For those of you who live in Chicago, the moron who is now your police chief is Garry McCarthy. Best of luck surviving in the windy city with this imbecile in charge of the Chicago P.D. One can only hope that the county has elected a competent sheriff. Of course, lost in the media coverage of Anthony Weiner’s wiener, was a little known incident involving the Department of Justice, at its highest levels and the ATF. I am speaking of course about Operation Fast and Furious. This was an Obama Administration program of buying automatic weapons in large quantities and handing them over freely to Mexican Drug Lords and their foot soldiers. A coherent purpose has not yet been established. Phase one: give guns to Mexican Drug Lords, phase two: ?, phase three: 150 Americans including one ATF agent shot.

When I first started writing about Fast and Furious, testimony had not yet been given. Now that some of it has, there is evidence before the committee which states that the operation was actually an initiative by the Obama Administration to highlight the dangers of a lack of gun control laws. By allowing American and Mexican citizens to be shot by illegally obtained guns, we were all supposed to collectively state, I get it now, the Second Amendment is wrong for us. All that has happened though, has been a stark illustration of what happens when thugs are armed, and law abiding citizens are stripped of their constitutional right to protect themselves. The Second Amendment, and indeed the constitution is under assault by not only the Obama Administration, but also by every liberal in the country. For some reason, the very plainly worded language written in this text has been left open for bizarre interpretation. Fortunately, the guys who wrote this fine founding document had the foresight to see that we would one day screw this up. They wrote their intentions down in a collection of essays called the Federalist Papers. They wrote these papers to explain the constitution to those citizens who would be asked to ratify the document as our national structure. James Madison, the author of the Second Amendment made clear in Federalist number 46 that the Second Amendment was not to form militias, but for private citizens to be armed for the purpose of self defense, and for the further point to fight an oppressive government should our Federal Behemoth become what it pretty much is today. I am not advocating armed resistance against the government, but what I am saying is that we get to keep the First Amendment because we have kept the Second.

One further point. I can not help but notice that it is the proponents of gun control who have resorted to insuring that innocent American citizens become the victims of gun violence. Many years in prison is what the end result for Fast and Furious should be, and it better not stop at simple fall guys either.

Abolish the ATF

There’s a good article over at American Thinker on what the consequences of “Operation Fast and Furious” should be. I agree, the BATF should be abolished. They are the example of a rogue agency, and have been for decades. I, too, want to know how far up the chain of command responsibility for this deceptive criminal enterprise went. I find it hard to believe that something this far reaching, that coincidentally happened to time out with a push by senior Administration officials to paint the “gun problem” in Mexico as being a problem with weapons smuggled from the United States, didn’t have clearance all the way from the top.

The Fast and Furious Scandal

The last thing the Mexican Drug war needed was the ATF getting involved. In operation fast and furious, the US Justice Department sold weapons to he Mexican drug cartels. There have been many excuses made by the Obama regime but none made sense. The logical explaining was they wanted to fuel the Mexican drug war and use the pretense of US arms as a pretext for gun control.

Rep. Darrell Isaa (R-CA) is investigating this scandal. So far, ATF head Kenneth Melson has being thrown under the bus by the Obama regime. This is probably just the tip of the iceberg.

There’s a war along the Mexican border all right, but it’s not necessarily the one you’re thinking of. In fact, this one has spread all the way to the halls of Congress.

This week, the Obama administration is expected to fire Kenneth Melson, the acting head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — tossing him under the bus as a symbolic gesture to a congressional committee headed by Rep. Daryl Issa (R-Calif.).

Issa’s Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is investigating an insane ATF operation — a supposed sting that involved the deliberate funneling of thousands of weapons to ultra-violent Mexican drug cartels in 2009-10.

The op’s name, “Fast and Furious,” came from the series of movies about an undercover drag racer working for the FBI — which gives you some idea of the lack of seriousness behind this cockamamie scam.

The Justice Department, which oversees the ATF, says the idea was to allow the sale of handguns, AK-47s and .50 caliber rifles to so-called “straw purchasers,” who’d then pass them along to the cartels. In theory, ATF agents would then trace the extent of the smuggling networks in an effort to stop the illegal cross-border gun trade.

Instead of working to stabilize Mexico, the Obama regime puts fuel on the fire to make a political point. Something stinks and it needs to be investigated as detailed as possible.

Sticky note attached to bacon shelf in meat cooler: Hope & Change at work here! High Prices - Thanks, Obama!

A special hat tip to Huckfunn, for allowing me the opportunity to write about this first amongst our little subcommunity of netizens.

I could very easily gone with another evil or incompetent theme for this posting and concluded it with the same old conclusion of it not mattering much, as the same disastrous results are what should have us all in a lather.  I will admit, there are plenty of times when this President and his minions have me perplexed.  Selling assault weapons to the Mexican Drug Cartels, who are effectively invading our country from the south is one of those times.  you may need some background information here, so I’ll do my best to explain it.  I say do my best, not because the facts are hard to comprehend, but because the facts are hard to believe.  Never before in the history of the entire universe has such a blind and unyielding arrogance been bestowed upon such an undeserving and unaccomplished dolt as our President.  This story may be the best possible example of this.

Operation, “Fast and Furious,” was established to track the activities of the Mexican Drug Cartels by keeping tabs on the use of their firearms.  If you are like me, that last sentence, which links to the story caused you to have a WTF moment.  So here was the purpose:

The operation was supposed to stem the flow of weapons from the U.S. to Mexico by allowing so-called straw buyers to purchase guns legally in the U.S. and later sell them in Mexico, usually to drug cartels.

The idea it seems was to sell guns to bad guys, and wait for them to be used, so that we would know which bad guys were doing what.  It an ATF agent or a private citizen got shot in the U.S., we would be able to determine which Cartel did it, as we gave them the gun, Brilliant!  At this point in our tale, you may be jumping up and down screaming, “BAD IDEA,” and as it turns out, you are not alone.

Instead, ATF documents show that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms knowingly and deliberately flooded Mexico with assault rifles. Their intent was to expose the entire smuggling organization, from top to bottom, but the operation spun out of control and supervisors refused pleas from field agents to stop it.

So, here we have another example of people with actual experience and knowledge of how best to do their jobs being ignored by Administration Bureaucrats with zero actual experience, and as it turns out, a dangerous dose of arrogance tied to an overrated Ivy League Education coupled with a complete ignorance of the subject matter on which they were charged with managing.  To date, 150 U.S. citizens have paid the ultimate price for this exercise in stupidity.  For those of you who have the Obama Hope and Change at work here post it notes, feel free to apply a few to this article.

With the background out of the way, let the conversation begin.  Is President Obama evil or incompetent or does it even matter?  About a month ago, President Obama went to Texas and said the following, “We have done everything humanly possible to secure the border and you have never been safer.”  He also quipped that, “those people will never be satisfied, next thing they’ll want a moat, and to put alligators in that moat.”  So, to be clear, yes Mr. President, sign me up for the moat please.  At the very least, could you stop selling guns you say private, law abiding citizens of the U.S. should not be allowed to have to the Mexican Drug Cartels who are using them to kill private, law abiding citizens of the U.S.  There are two arguments here which must be made.  I realize that there are more than two, but these two are a necessity.  One, after years of debate about the Second Amendment, we have heard that private gun ownership leads to violent crimes being committed.  Of course, this is not true, but it keeps getting repeated none the less.  This leads to the completely unnecessary argument that if we take away the rights of private, law abiding citizens to own guns, that only criminals would have them, and render the rest of us unprotected.  We just never though our own government would be the ones supplying the bad guys with weapons.  How exactly is Operation Fast and Furious doing everything humanly possible to protect the border.  Do you realize that more Americans have died as a result of operation Fast and Furious than in Iraq and Afghanistan combined since President Obama has assumed his latest title?  I am still waiting for NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, Time, NYT, Newsweek etc. to say a single thing about any of this.  Notice that this is a Fox News story.  If you refer to Fox as Faux, you are mistaken. It is time to wakey wakey and rub those sleepy eyes.  Two, please read the Constitution of the United States.  You will find that only one form of government expenditure is actually mentioned.  That is the government’s responsibility to maintain a military for the purpose of defending our nation against foreign threats.  It is the government’s responsibility to protect us and to keep us safe.  In the debate about budgets and spending cuts, I will always hear the left complain that the military budget should be cut, that we can not afford that in particular.  What is going on along our southern border is a catastrophe.  Armed foreigners have set up operations within our sovereign territory and are openly killing American Citizens.  That is the definition of an invasion.  Our President has sworn an oath to protect our country and our Constitution.  This oath said nothing about arming the invaders, no matter how idiotically well intentioned the weapons sales may have been.

Now we can discuss the evil or stupid bit.  I have a hard time believing that there was not a single person in control who did not know or have the foresight to realize the disaster that this would turn out to be.  Plenty of ATF agents sounded the alarm bells.  There is no way that all of Obama’s people are this bereft of functioning brain cells.  But it really doesn’t matter to me anyhow.  The end result is the same.  150 American lives have been lost as a direct result of the government’s program.  These people must be removed from power before they endanger the rest of us further.  Congressional hearings on this start on Monday, and it should be interesting to watch.  As an American though, I want to see something actually happen as a result of those hearings.  I don’t want more rhetoric and empty promises.  I want competent people put back in charge of the country.

As a side note, I keep hearing about how dumb George Bush is, or how dumb Sarah Palin is.  For you liberals out there who perpetuate those characterizations, how does this compare?  How do you correlate this exercise from Obama and team with intelligence.  I can guarantee you that Sarah Palin or George Bush on a 7 day bender, and immediately after being whacked in the head with a steel shovel would not have come up with this one.
