The rise of Libertarianism in the Republican Party

For the last 21 years the Republican Party has been defined by the struggle between a Conservative base and a cynical Establishment that uses red meat rhetoric to win support of the base, but then once in power do nothing for them. Although the GOP pays lip service to economic freedom and fiscal responsibility, the record has been one that any Socialist can be proud of. This contradiction has made it virtually impossible for the Republican Party to win the Presidency. Despite Obama’s failures, Democrats are odds on favorite to win in 2016 because of their advantage in the electoral college and their broad based demographic coalition. However, something is occurring on the Right that can remake the electoral landscape.

Since last November’s defeat, many Republican leaning voters are starting to reassess their views. Most Republican voters are neither base Conservatives nor Establishment. Most tend to be economically Conservative and socially Libertarian. However, because of the Establishment-Base monopoly, their voices have been muted. Now with the Rise of Rand Paul, this silent majority of Republican voters finally have found their identity. Many are now embracing the label Libertarian to distinguish themselves from base Conservatives and the cynical Establishment. A new poll shows the growing clout of the Libertarian movement within the Republican Party.

A new poll confirms a libertarian renaissance in 2013.

FreedomWorks commissioned a national survey of registered voters last month, shared first with POLITICO, that finds 78 percent of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents self-identify as fiscally conservative and socially moderate.

It’s not that Republicans are suddenly self-identifying as “libertarians” and devouring Ayn Rand novels, but more that they seem to be embracing underlying libertarian priorities and views about the role of government.

[….]
The poll asked Republican voters what they are most interested in: 40 percent said “individual freedom through lower taxes and reducing the size and scope of government,” 27 percent picked “traditional values” and 18 percent chose a “strong national defense.”
[….]
Social issues have become less salient to GOP voters: 41 percent said gay marriage is not one of their top 10 issues. Asked about abortion, about one-third said it is one of the top three issues they care about; another third said it is not in the top three but somewhere in the top 10 and the final third said it is not one of their top 10 concerns.

One-quarter of Republicans self-identified as “libertarian” or “lean libertarian.” Of Republicans, 42 percent view the term “libertarian” favorably and 10 percent don’t know it.

[….]

Told that libertarians generally believe individuals should be free to do as they like as long as they don’t hurt others and that the government should keep out of people’s day-to-day lives, 58 percent of the full national sample said they agree.

A slight majority, 52 percent, said government should not promote any particular set of values, compared with 40 percent who think government should promote “traditional values.”

[….]

The poll also challenges some widely held perceptions of the millennial generation. The survey oversampled younger people to get a better sense of the difference between the views of those ages 18 to 24, many of whom have not had full-time jobs, and 25-to-32-year-olds who have spent a few years in the working world. Asked if they favor “smaller government with fewer services but lower taxes,” 51 percent of the youngest group said yes compared with 64 percent of the slightly older group.

2016 will be interesting was now there will be a 3 way fight for the Republican Party between The Establishment, the Conservative Base and Libertarians. As this poll shows, it’s the Libertarian faction which actually has the numbers and if the right person can energize this silent majority, they will prevail.
A Libertarian leaning Republican will be formidable and unlike the current contradictory incarnation, will have mass appeal among different geographic regions and demographic groups. Whether 2016 will be the year Libertarians triumph in the GOP is yet to be seen. But you can take it to the bank that in the GOP nominee in 2020 will be a Libertarian and that candidate will win and establish a new Republican coalition for the 21st century!

Blogmocracy in Action:
Guest Post by Bumr50.

In what’s being touted as a “victory” in such circles as World Net Daily, the Heritage Foundation has announced that it will not be represented at this year’s CPAC due to the continued participation of the gay Republican group GOProud.

WASHINGTON – Two more big guns of the conservative movement confirmed today they are not participating in the Conservative Political Action Conference next month because of the continued participation of the homosexual activist organization GOProud.

The Heritage Foundation, the largest think tank in Washington and not known as part of the religious right, confirmed that it is not taking part in what has been the largest annual gathering of conservatives in the country. Heritage has been an active participant in CPAC every year for the last 10.

“We have withdrawn,” said Mike Gonzalez, vice president of communications for the Heritage Foundation. “We have been there for many, many years at the highest level of participation.

Heritage’s official site has no mention of the flounce.

This at BEST counterproductive.

Some objectivity from the Daily Caller.

The participation of gay conservative organization GOProud in this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference has resulted in several socially conservative organizations declaring their intention to skip the annual event.

On Wednesday, the Washington Times reported that the Heritage Foundation will join the Family Research Council, the American Family Association, the Media Research Council, the National Organization for Marriage and others in declining to attend.

It’s not clear whether the Heritage Foundation’s decision not to participate is related to the involvement of GOProud. Heritage was not available for comment.

GOProud Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia told The Daily Caller that the controversy over his group’s involvement was “by and large driven by a man by the name of Joe Farah of WorldNetDaily.”

It’s not as though GOProud is trying to take over the event. They are not the type of group that pushes ANY social agenda. In fact, their de facto position on such matters mirrors my own in that they don’t believe that government has any business wondering what people do behind closed doors.

Maybe we should write twenty different letters to Rush to see if he can give some kind of explanation on air.

He’s pretty tight with them, and doesn’t seem to share the moral crusade.

This should be a big deal.

It’s why we lose in spite of ourselves

I would have a completely different opinion if GOProud were a gay activist group. They’re not. They just happen to be conservative and gay.

I have a great deal of respect for Heritage, and they are coming off as TOTAL bigots (real ones, not the kind that the Left wishes we were) and advocates of socially driven policy within government – meaning MORE government, not less, in areas in which they feel socially conflicted (read morally superior to those keeping score.)

I believe homosexuality is a sin. Not a crime. I sin every day. My bible preaches forgiveness in ALL matters of the flesh.

This sets a horrible example, and more viscerally gives the left ammo to hurl (no longer baseless) insults at the conservative movement as being cruelly intolerant while at the same time making it much harder for any new conservative hopeful to use the great resource that the Heritage Foundation is without carrying this huge amount of baggage.

Social Conservatives feel Scapegoated

It is open season on Social Conservatives now. The Media, various GOP leaders and bloggers like Kid Icarus are blaming Social Cons for the fall of the Republican Party. Their leaders feel scapegoated and are trying to fight back.

Social Conservative Leaders Feel Scapegoated

There is a brooding sense within top social conservative circles that they have become the revolving scapegoat of the Republican Party. Many of the longtime leaders of the Christian right, from Richard Land to Tony Perkins to Gary Bauer, expressed resentment in extended interviews with a singular theme: that the most loyal GOP bloc has been so quickly thrown under many critics’ bus.

“There are powerful interest groups in the party and in the country that are trying to scapegoat social conservatives,” Land said, who has long served as a bridge between Southern Baptists’ political concerns and GOP leadership. “It’s people who have no problem ignoring facts.”

The Republican Party’s problem are its economic views. The GOP solution for everything is a Tax cut for Capital Gains. The GOP needs to become more innovative in its policies if it ever wants to win again. Blaming Social Conservatives for the Republican’s defeat is wrong and stupid. What is needed is new economic ideas, not throwing Social Cons under the bus as Kid Icarus and his ilk suggest.

It is official, Nancy is now all out against Social Conservatives. He makes a post on Utah Gov. Huntsman criticizing SoCons. He then updates that post that Huntsman was dis invited from speaking to a Conservative Group. Now he has a thread on Obama’s Press conference and he takes his shots!

Let us look at his thoughts:

Uh oh. Humans Halfway to Causing Dangerous Climate Change.

When human injection of carbon into the atmosphere reaches 1 trillion tons, dangerous climate change with average global warming of more than 2 Celsius degrees will likely occur, a new analysis finds.

And humans are hurrying toward that 1 trillion mark. So far, we’ve added about 520 billion tons of carbon to the atmosphere. With the addition of an estimated 9 billion tons of carbon a year — a number that’s been growing since 1850 — dangerous warming is likely to occur within half a century.

That’s the message from a new paper in the journal Nature, which — along with half a dozen other papers in the issue — provides a simpler way of looking at the climate change problem. What matters is the total amount of carbon that we release into the atmosphere, and focusing on that number as a budget can shape the way policymakers look at the problem, argues Myles Allen, lead author of one of the papers and a climatologist at the University of Oxford.

“The important thing about the cumulative budget is that a ton of carbon is a ton of carbon. If we release it now, it’s a ton we can’t release in 40 years’ time. Every ton we put out is using up a ton of that atmospheric capacity,” Allen told Wired.com. “Reducing emissions steadily over 50 years is much cheaper and easier and less traumatic than allowing them to rise for 15 years and then reducing them violently for 35 years.

The renown scientist Charles Johnson has declared Global Warming a fact!
