The Sunday Super Bowl Thread

It’s Super Bowl LI….okay, NFL, maybe it’s time to get away from that Roman Numeral thing. You used “50” last year, no doubt because “Super Bowl L” looks like someone made a mistake in the printing office. Now it’s “Super Bowl LI” which for the uninitiated can read like “Super Bowl LIE.” (The real irony on that one being that the Patriots are in it – but more on that later).

Every year I throw a Super Bowl Party, and every year I pray that the Patriots are not in it. (No offense to Patriots fans – I’m sure the East Coast felt the same way back in the 80’s with respect to the 49ers, when they had an annoying coach and were still a team with a sense of patriotism and decency). But, as my Mom used to say “God answers all prayers….but sometimes the answers ‘no’.” Such is my lottery this year.

Lady Gaga is the half-time performer this year. And the cast of “Hamilton” is singing “God Bless America.” Great – a rabid Hillary supporter and dirtbags who had the temerity to call out the Vice President for attending their performance. A word of warning to both of you – you ain’t in L.A. and you ain’t in New York. Welcome to TEXAS.

The really interesting thing about the Super Bowl – the reason everyone watched even if your team wasn’t playing – was the COMMERCIALS.  And Budweiser had, hands down, the best.  The football playing ponies?  The “Jammin'” frogs.  The 9/11 tribute was outstanding (I tear up just THINKING about it) and Mom and Dad helping baby pull the coach was the best “awwww” moment.  But this year, apparently it’s really important that AB send us a m.e.s.s.a.g.e.  Immigrants are great people!  Immigrants do GREAT things.  Attention AB – no one’s saying they aren’t.  And your message would be a lot more effective if you hadn’t sold yourself off to a Belgian company a couple years ago.  So YOU aren’t even American anymore.

And then there’s the hype. This is a game with precisely one HOUR of actual playing time.  ONE.  Yet it requires six hours of pre-game hype.  Here is how the Patriots got here……Here is how the Falcons got here.  Of course, if it were really egalitarian, the two teams that scored the most points in the regular season should be the one playing, right, Hillary?

So best of luck to the Atlanta Falcons.  There’s a certain sense of pride as a Saints fan that two teams that kicked the crap out of us have made it to the Super Bowl in successive years.  So yeah, I’ll be pulling for the dirty birds just this once.  But seriously, for me there’s a sense of win, win in this.  Because if the Falcons lose, the worst Commissioner in the history of the NFL, Roger Goodell, will have to present that BIG silver football trophy to the Quarterback he suspended for four games at the beginning of the year for supposedly lying about Deflategate.  And it will be a crushing blow to all the self righteous sports writers who had the temerity to demand an explanation from one of the finest quarterbacks in the NFL why he is friends with – get this – the President of the United States.  And adjunct Morehouse “professor” David Dennis Jr., who called Brady more in-Patriotic than Colin Kaeperdick?  He can kiss Brady’s rosy Irish ass.

As always, it’s an open thread.  Discuss the week’s events and laugh at the media here.  ENJOY everyone.

P.S.  Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet starts at 3:00 p.m. Eastern I believe.  Skip the hype – cheer the Too Cute!
