Sunday Sports Spectacular!

Saints lost Thursday. Boo-effing-who. I remember when I cared.

The NFL slow-poisoning season rolls on.

It’s promising to see Tiger Woods start the return to golf. Cold Warrior had it exactly right in the comments last week. Tiger revitalized the game in America – and especially brought in the kids from the inner cities into a sport that to me, is the epitome of sportsmanship and manners (although these days I wish I could say the same for some of the fans). Okay, the occasional club gets thrown. But these days, at $200 a pop, yeah, no. And yeah Tiger was a randy dude but comparing him in light of what’s been coming out of Hollywood and Washington, he’s achieved a status he hasn’t seen since the 90’s – rank amateur.

So welcome back, Tiger.   And congrats on a respectable score for your sponsored tournament last week.  Can’t wait to see you hit the tee on 17 at Sawgrass again.

NFL Matchups today (keep this up and soon there’ll be more people on the grass than in the seats):

Colts @ Bills
Vikings @ Panthers
Bears @ Bengals
Packers @ Browns
Bay Area Jackwads @ Texans
Raiders @ Chiefs
Lions at Bucanneers
Cowboys @ Giants
Titans @ Cardinals
Jets @ Broncos
Redskins @ Chargers
Seahawks @ Jaguars
Eagles @ Rams
Ravens @ Steelers

Monday’s Game
Patriots @ Dolphins

In the NHL, Skates and Ice will be flying in the following locations:

Coyotes @ Blackhawks’
Sabres @ Blues
Oilers @ Maple Leafs
Wild @ Sharks (and hey – it’s on in my area!)

In the PGA, the QBE Shootout from Naples, Florida is on the Golf Channel. I don’t know what a “shootout” is (take it away, C.W.!!)

As usual, here is your open thread for Sunday.  I’m sure the Sunday shows were jam-packed with “unpartisan” news about the duly-elected President and the media and opposition party who apparently can’t accept it.

Comments

Comments and respectful debate are both welcome and encouraged.

Comments are the sole opinion of the comment writer, just as each thread posted is the sole opinion or post idea of the administrator that posted it or of the readers that have written guest posts for the Blogmocracy.

Obscene, abusive, or annoying remarks may be deleted or moved to spam for admin review, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their content by any other commenter or the admins of this Blogmocracy.

We're not easily offended and don't want people to think they have to walk on eggshells around here (like at another place that shall remain nameless) but of course, there is a limit to everything.

Play nice!

American skiing star Lindsey Vonn has withdrawn from her Sunday events at the World Cup in Switzerland after suffering a back injury during a super-G race on Saturday.

The injury occurred two days after she criticized President Donald Trump in an interview about the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea.

It’s not a sport for the tentative.

A nagging back injury would probably hamper her where the margin of victory is sometimes hundredths of seconds.

She can fall back on her Under Armour ads.

ok, I’ll do it for you. Trump, if memory serves, got raked for noting Sweden lets its resident jihadis run wild. I think they even denied there are ‘no go’ areas.

So yesterday a synagogue got firebombed

So, if the pattern holds, this should be fun. #GrabYourWallet, led by Shannon Coulter – she’s the bitch who started the Ivanka Trump boycott at retailers – is putting businesses that operate in Alabama on notice should Roy Moore win.

Like Toyota. Oh, yeah, that’ll work.

man, I do NOT want to be around for this if it’s sentient, no siree.

NASA has announced a press conference for Thursday and is expected to confirm a major discovery about life beyond earth.

The announcement will be made by the team of scientists who have been studying the several thousand planets discovered by the Kepler space telescope. Kepler is the most successful planet-hunting probe in history, having identified more than 2500 planets with another 2000 candidates that still need to be studied.

Kepler has found several planets orbiting their star in the so-called “Goldilocks Zone,” where it is warm enough for liquid water to flow. The announcement may be related to one of those planets.

OTOH, if it’s true, the implications are profound. Especially the part about not triggering other cytokines. hey, I don’t think you saw it but I have a question about the Michael Flynn case that somebody on another site brought up and I’d like your opinion. It’s about something called Grilio – I can’t remember the exact term, I’ll have to look it up. But the question was if this FBI guy Strzok interviewed him and Flynn was not informed that Strzok had some sort of conflict, then some sort of rule was violated? This was about 4 days ago, I’ll have to go back and recapture it all.

Did the prosecution tell Flynn’s lawyer that their main witness against him was removed for bias? Since Strzok led the interview and his testimony would be needed to establish untruthfulness, he is a critical witness not just a prosecutor. If not disclosed, would this not be a Giglio violation? This is the kind of misconduct that can get a case dismissed and a lawyer disbarred. It is a Constitutional violation.

You would have been a terrific lawyer eagles. Sorry for not tuning in but this weekend was Christmas decoration at the house plus I needed to make cookies for the Cookie Exchange and tree trimming today. I even went to Wal-Mart for festive sweater for the occasion.

I’m of a mind that Flynn really did nothing wrong and that it was simply a matter of breaking him. In fact, did Flynn even KNOW he was being interviewed as a formal part of the investigation. I don’t know who his lawyer was, but I would love to see a lawyer step up and represent Flynn pro bono and withdraw the plea. And I’d like to see Manafort do the same.

My real anger in all of this is still directed at Sessions, who recused himself for no real reason and with Rosenstein, who had no business appointing a special counsel in the first place. There was no specific crime alleged to support this appointment. Personally, I’d like to get my hands on Rosenstein’s private email.

NO! NO! Those words weren’t mine, they’re from a former judge. that was noted in the link, I should have put it here.

I’m in the process of writing things down to collect my thoughts because something about Flynn doesn’t make sense.

I probably would not have made a good lawyer – but an investigator – yeah.

    There are missing dots.

    @ eaglesoars:

Oh, no doubt you would have made a brilliant investigator – heck, you ARE one!

As far as the Trump accusers go, I see one of them saying “he looked me over like I was a piece of meat.”

OH NOES! The dreaded “he looked at me funny!” accusation! Well, tootsie, I have what is known in the business as a “resting bitch face.” I look like I’m ready to tear your face off when actually all I’m thinking about is if I want shrimp for lunch or not.

  40. 40 | December 11, 2017 10:39 am

    @ eaglesoars:

Getting back to Flynn, even Comey, when initially asked about his statements, said that as far as he could see, there was no real attempt to decieve, he must misspoke.

A bigger argument can be made about the unmasking. If the dossier was used for the FISA warrant, it was done under false pretenses. Strzok I believe was the one who went to FISA with the dossier to get the warrant. I don’t believe for a minute that Strzok did not know that it was opposition research by Trump’s opponent. If Strok did not disclose this, he lied to get the warrant. If the warrant is faulty, all information received from the “fruit of the poisonous tree” should not, under law, be entered into evidence. The key to all of this is the FISA warrant and the unmasking. This, to me, requires a special counsel as the FBI will be the subject of the investigation. Call Rudy Giuliani.

Which is WHY I believe John McCain was enlisted to bring the dossier to the FBI. The Hillary campaign and those in the FBI colluding with her needed a “concerned” Congressional official – preferably a Republican, of course – to bring it to the FBI so there would be no taint of partisanship. No one told McCain they already had it – why not? Because I think he was part of the scheme. In return for “President” Clinton’s awarding of a prestige cabinet post.

    @ eaglesoars:

My immediate thought? Contreras is the judge who signed the FISA warrant that was obtained using the phony dossier. Otherwise we would have been given a reason for the recusal. Federal judges recuse themselves all the time – it can be anything from a personal relationship with one of the parties to holding stock in a corporation that is a party to the instant action.

Since Contreras presided over the initial hearing involving Flynn, he would have already seen the Certificate of Interested Parties that is filed with any action, and would have recused himself initially if there was a harmless basis. My money is on that he has a connection with the issuance of the October 2016 FISA warrant.

looks like it. Then my next questions: I’m not clear on why that would not have REQUIRED he recuse himself from the trial altogether; would Flynn’s lawyers have had reason to know he is a FISA judge and should that not have given them pause to wonder if there were grounds to ask for recusal?

He probably starting panicking the minute Nunez was released from the prohibition of dealing with this issue. Nunez has the documents, and Nunez has the sources. Would not surprise me in the least if Schiff was given something with an ambiguous dating just to see if he was leaking to the press. If true, he should be removed from the Committee.

either him or Salwell but I think it was staffers because TWO sources gave the date as Sept 4 instead of Sept 14. That could be explained IF they did not have the original email but were working with a handwritten transcription that had that mistake – or any kind of copy that made that mistake – but in any case not the original.

  57. eaglesoars
    57 | December 11, 2017 4:12 pm

    @ Deplorable Barbarian:

The court life really divides into 2 eras, before Maintenon and Maintenon (Madame Scarron). I would start with the Duc St Simon, who to this day remains a highly respected memorist

Memoirs of Louis XIV., by The Duke of Saint-Simon

    https://www.gutenberg.org/files/3875/3875-h/3875-h.htm

and I suppose Amazon has it also. He does give an on-the-ground POV of the politics, but of course, there were concurrent events he could not have been aware of. Like what the hell was going on in Spain and England.

As for his reign specifically – a very few, none that I know enough about to recommend. The best known is probably Nancy Mitford, but I wouldn’t consider her a historian. I would think you would look for something that had a broader, European scope.

let see what I can find

See if you can find Book 8 of Will Durant’s The Story of Civilization. It is devoted to Louis XIV, his time, era, etc. The problem is – it’s an 11 volume set and I don’t know that you can get it as a ‘single’. I will certainly recommend it, I have the set and it is a fascinating book.

BUT – a library might have it and let you use just vol 8. Certainly, they’d be able to find it for you. The bibliography is good too. That’s how I found St Simone and Mme. de Sevigny.

I rather enjoyed the three-part series Ovation did on the history of Versailles prior to the airing of the series. I love these documentaries. I’m surprised no one has started a REAL historical documentary channel, with nothing but historical miniseries and various documentaries. I think I’d turn that one on and never turn it off.

There was a great documentary on Netflix called “Edward VIII: The Nazi King” — I knew the Windsors visited Nazi Germany but I had NO idea the extent this duo of deceit was willing to go to cozy up to and assist Hitler. That photo of Her Royal Bitchiness smiling at Hitler and extending her hand to Hitler still makes me want to punch my TV set when I see it.

Connecticut family says that they were the toast of many members of the New York Social Register in the 50’s. But there were plenty in the upper echelons that wouldn’t be caught dead within 5 feet of them.

    @ Deplorable Barbarian:

In the early days probably MOST of European royalty supported Hitler. After what happened in Russia/Romanovs no one dared take lightly the threat of Communism. They fell for Hitler for one reason and one reason only – he promised they could keep their titles and their land. It was a lie, of course, but they wanted to believe it. The Hesses of Germany (of which there are – were – many branches, led the parade. Prince Phillips sisters made the same mistake. Edward and Wallis were different only in that one of their motives was malice toward the royal family for their treatment of Wallis. Edward had no desire to be King other than to make Wallis queen and stick it to his family. He couldn’t be bothered with it when he WAS king.

Quite a cozy bunch over there at the FBI. No wonder they’re dragging their feet about turning documents over to Congress.

Completely agree with you about Royal Houses having some agreement with Hitler – wasn’t Czarina Alexandra a member of the Hess family?

Edward was a frigging SNAKE. Did he even imagine what would happen to the Royal Family if Hitler got hold of them? Prison or even WORSE. They would have “vanished”.

yes she was. “People say” that the reason King Geo. did not give them an escape is because he ddn’t want England caught up in anti-monarchal fever.

That was part of it. The other part is that her family could not stand the woman. They warned her FOR YEARS that she was going to get her entire family thrown out of the country – at best – and she just kept parroting ‘divine right, divine right’. No crown needed THAT aggravation on their own shores. So even when Alexander knew it was over, she was STILL lecturing then entire continent on ‘divine right, divine right’. She was like a bird that wouldn’t shut up

Hitler did not bear the racial animosity toward Britain he bore toward others. It is quite possible he would have left Edward on the throne as a pliable king – as long as he was pliable. See France. No utter destruction until the end of the war and the country was lost. His tolerance, if not his early ‘grooming’ – of idiots like Unity Mitford were part and parcel of preparing for that.

    @ eaglesoars:

Indeed. The real “chicken or the egg” question when it comes to Nicholas and Alexandra is if the Tsarevich had not been afflicted with hemophilia, which led to the rise of Rasputin and his manipulation of Alexandra vis-a-vis ministerial appointments, etc. back in Petersburg while Nicholas was prosecuting WWI, would the Russian monarchy survived?

I tend to think not. He was not really fit for the job any more than Edward VIII was. And you’re right – he was way too influenced by Alexandra who was all about IMPERIAL rights. People had no bread but Nicky was so much smarter than all those ministers that she kept having replaced.

agreed. Rasputin was simply spice in the dish of a society of abject poverty and ignorance. I don’t know that anybody could have avoided the revolution. In some form or another, they were due. And the place is SO BIG, even during the Soviet age, there were a lot of areas that were basically ‘live and let live’.

Well, I’m off to get my fill of The Crown. talk later.

I actually have only watching one or two games this year. None yesterday. I still look at the NFL scores. I’m finding I can get along ok without the NFL. Where it used to be one of the big yearly events in my life.

  68. 68 | December 11, 2017 7:56 pm

    @ darkwords:

You know, I feel the same way. The Football Savant Offspring actually has taken to watching the Red Zone – he’d rather watch scoring than what comes before. I have the Game Mix on from time to time, but the NFL gets no ratings from that channel.

I hear the stadiums are getting emptier.
