We are firmly ensconced at G’Ma and Papap Coldwarrior’s palatial estate in the far northwest corner of PA for the 2024 solar eclipse. Their property lies in the path of totality. I have brought along the Meade 10″ Newtonian telescope with the solar filter from Thousand Oaks Optical (my favorite filter company for optics, excellent products). Eclipse time is about 3pm Monday. We gave the kids Monday and Tuesday off from school, however, they must provide a report and details of the event for their science teacher.
The City of Erie and the surrounding counties are going to make a fortune! The highways leading here all have a state trooper and tow trucks at all exit ramps.

1. Thanks XXXXXXXXX your news item (Bob Edlin & buzz from the Beehive) on the rock called olivine might become the boulder that sinks the fixation that the climate change lovers have on C02 emissions. The article triggered some long dormant geology and geochemistry in my science. Here follows a few highlights about our geological friend, olivine. (Typically, the rock has a shiny luster greenish hue and is harder than glass).
2. Olivine is a kind of geological Hydrogen (H2). Olivine (Oli) produces natural Hydrogen. This natural process can be copied and when Olivine is under hydrothermic conditions it can yield hydrogen; an exciting key to our future energy needs. The essence of this process is shown in the chemical equation:
Fe0 + H20 >>>> Fe304 + H2. In English we would call Fe0, Ferrous oxide and Fe304, Ferrous-ferric oxide if we were doing chemistry. If we were doing geology and looking at this iron oxide in a rock and we were thinking about minerals, we would call Fe304, magnetite.
3. Rocks are not part of whakapapa: to try and include rocks within the concept of whakapapa is to confuse its true meaning which relates to ancestry and family tree. If one wishes to include the odd Hydrogen or Silicon atom (to use just two atoms that feature in the periodic table of all atoms) which may have been in the bones of a human ancestor 1000+ generations ago, we would need to contend that all humans and indeed all life came from rocks. Biogeochemical cycles may potentially mean that we all may share the odd atom that was once in the body of an ancient. Take your pick: was it Ceaser or Te Rauparaha’s great, great, great grandfather or Confucius. One implication from this line of thought will be that all people have a right to claim connection to any rock within the earth’s crust that may have featured in one of many geological cycles. This will mean that all people, (including so-called pakeha and Maori) have equal claims to connections with the earth.
4. Oli occurs in igneous rocks, e.g. basalt & plagioclase.
5. Molecules like magnesium iron silicate (Mg, Fe)2Si04 are key components of Oli. [Quick chem revision in case you would like it: Mg = Magnesium metal; Fe = iron; Si = Silicon and Si04 is silica, the main stuff in sand].
6. Magnesium iron silicate is probably the most abundant mineral in the earth’s upper mantle. Crusty stuff. We also find, as you might expect, MgSi04 & FeSi04. BTY, it is wrong to show Si04 as Si04! If I see this sort of slackness, I start to reject the rest of an article that describes these molecules.
7. Is Oli a rock or a mineral? Oli is a mineral in some igneous rocks and very abundant.
8. New Zealand has had lots of volcanism for a long time; we are well blessed with Olivine; we may be sitting on minerals worth heaps of $’s. The technical geological name for oli is chrysolite; this term is derived from the Greek for gold and stone.
9. Oli is chemically unstable and decomposes to clay once exposed to the atmosphere.
10. Now some exciting stuff: Oli reacts with carbon dioxide and can remove atmospheric C02.In chemical engineering terms this mineral is designated a CDR. In plain English it is a carbon dioxide removal agent. CDR= carbon dioxide removal.
11. The Mg0 (Magnesium oxide) takes the C02 out of the air, viz
Mg0 + C02 >>>>> MgC03 (Magnesium carbonate).
12. Hey this is kapai news. Heaps better than the boring endless green groups yapping about “reducing C02 emissions” by banning cars and cows.
13. Enhanced silicate weathering (ESW) is a CDR. ESW removes C02 (atmospheric).
14. ESW can also greatly help reduce OCEAN acidification. ESW does this by removing C02 from sea water. To explain this, I need to show quite a bit of chemistry. Not essential. The take away top point is that the sort of thinking contained within the points mentioned above presents a refreshing new line on the mostly one-eyed utterances of “green groups”.
15. Olivine has a long history in human cultures and features in jewelry and good luck charms. Here I stick to the environmental theme. I hope that these few points are helpful. Onward,

ALL HOT…. that had been stolen to order. Right down to the carpets from someone’s house, taps furniture sheets blankets , TV, frig, stove and even food. Nobody said anything and the Angels just rolled up did the offload and left without a word!
All of a sudden the folks, from the wrong side South Auckland, who were being preyed upon by scum squatters, suddenly didn’t have a problem, that was besetting he rest of Auckland, The local cops knew what was happening, as the Accident and Emergency Rooms in hospitals filled with physically destroyed squatters. Society had solved the squatter problem by damaging squatter bodies until they decided to go into another line of crime. The folks were happy, the cops were happy, and the only one’s complaining were the lawyers, liberal politicians and overworked A & E Emergency rooms in the hospitals!.
Obviously society had fixed its own squatting problem, and everyone settled down. Unlike most of the other criminal gangs the Hell’s Angels just wanted peace, not because they were actual angels, they certainly were NOT but so that they could get on with making $$$$$

Hamas’s leadership in Rafah continues to cling to fanatical visions of eventual victory, six months into the war it launched with Israel, according to Israeli observers.
“As long as they are not decisively defeated, they have a chance to stay alive in Gaza. Therefore, they positively view the outcomes of the war, or at least they have some kind of optimism,” said Brig. Gen. (res.) Yossi Kuperwasser, former head of the Research and Assessment Division of Israel’s Military Intelligence and currently director of the Project on Regional Affairs at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs.
“They paid a very heavy price, but they also achieved a very big accomplishment in their eyes on Oct. 7. Overall, they see the balance as positive because there’s a chance they will remain in power. This is the central thing for them concerning Gaza,” he added.
“In Judea and Samaria, I think there too the balance is mixed. The third intifada they [Hamas’s leadership] expected did not occur. The extent of terrorism in Judea and Samaria, though painful and exacting a toll from Israel, did not stun Israel as did the action on Oct. 7 did,” he said, “because Israel acts very vigorously and broadly against terrorist infrastructure, especially those of Hamas in Judea and Samaria.”
However, he continued, “They can also credit themselves with the fact that the Palestinian public strongly supports what they did, and the Palestinian popular support for them is significant.”
Hamas had hoped that its efforts, in coordination with Iran, to escalate terrorism levels in Judea and Samaria, including through attempts to smuggle Iranian arms into the area, would create a new war front.
While that has not occurred, Hamas’s popularity among Palestinians in Judea and Samaria remains high, and the Palestinian Authority refrains from condemning the Oct. 7 mass murder attack, Kuperwasser noted.
“On the other hand, there’s also criticism from the P.A. against Hamas regarding the damage they caused in Gaza. The internal tension in the Palestinian system remains,” he said, but this has not affected the broad public support for Hamas.
In the north, Hamas “expected more from Hezbollah,” said Kuperwasser.
“The IDF acts in a focused manner against Hezbollah and Hamas in Lebanon, exacting prices by eliminating key and central operatives. Hamas failed to bring Hezbollah into the war beyond the boundaries set by Nasrallah,” he said. “Hezbollah’s solidarity is nice for Hamas, but it’s not something that forces Israel to divert large forces northwards at this stage, and Israel is actually able to concentrate forces to deal with Hamas’s infrastructure in Gaza without having to deal with the north. And it can still do so even in Rafah if it decides to.”
As of now, according to Kuperwasser, Hezbollah is imposing no constraint on Israeli freedom of action that would prevent a Rafah operation.
“Right now, there’s a chance they [Hamas] will achieve their desired goals, from their perspective, and also strengthen their position within the Palestinian system, while receiving the commitment of support from the Iranian axis, and the Muslim Brotherhood axis towards them,” he said. “See, for example, the Turkish economic step against Israel. And Hamas might be able to stay in power. They still believe this is possible. But there’s also concern within Hamas that this will not happen, and that Israel, in the end, will enter Rafah and complete the takeover of all of Gaza. This concern still exists. Therefore, I do not propose anyone begins summing up the war just because six months have passed,” he cautioned.
What is beyond debate, however, is that Hamas’s entire strategy today boils down to a global pressure campaign to force Israel to stop the war before Hamas collapses in Gaza.
“The whole campaign for them, the way to win the campaign, is through [U.S. President Joe] Biden,” he said. “Everything they do is to exert pressure on Biden, so he pressures Israel so that Israel stops before it collapses Hamas in Gaza. That’s the whole idea.”
Hamas’s “use of Israeli hostages, the manipulation of the suffering of the Palestinian civilians in Gaza, the activities of their allies, both within the Palestinian system and outside it,” are all directed toward this end, he said.
“Also, all the protests around the world, all the political pressures—this is seen positively by Hamas. As well as the activities of the [American] Democrats and other actors in the West against Israel, all of the pressure on Israel,” he added. “It’s still not enough to say that the goal was achieved, but there are certainly some achievements on the way to this goal, and they see very positively the American pressure on Israel.”
Michael Barak, a senior researcher and head of the Global Jihad Research at the International Institute for Counter Terrorism (ICT) and a lecturer at the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy at Reichman University, Herzliya, said that while Hamas’s plan to spark a widespread wave of violence in Judea and Samaria in Ramadan failed, Hamas has longer-term goals.
“In the medium term, they see success in what is happening, at least according to articles published by Hamas operatives and according to their propaganda,” said Barak.
“Why do they think the current war is succeeding? Among the 20 reasons they list, there’s the issue of strengthening what they call ‘the consciousness of resistance in the West Bank.’ Despite Israel’s successful counter-terrorism operations, the youth, at least according to Hamas, see what’s happening in Gaza and their determination to adhere and join the fight against Israel is growing,” he said.
“Secondly, there’s the Palestinian Authority, which is no longer a player, it’s a ‘dead horse,’ not truly representing the Palestinians, and therefore it’s only a matter of time until it’s replaced according to Hamas’s view,” he added.
Hamas is planning to be part of a future P.A. leadership that might take the reigns in Gaza, which would represent the failure by Israel to achieve one of its main war aims, Barak cautioned.
Internationally, Hamas sees that Israel is isolated, it sees the very deep rift between the United States and Israel, and it gains encouragement, according to Barak.
“[Hamas leader in Gaza Yahya] Sinwar is also encouraged by the fact that economically, Israel is facing erosion. That social resilience is weakening. He sees the patience that the Palestinian people in Gaza show and that they are not acting against Hamas, so he thinks it proves that Hamas is the only answer against Israel, no matter how long it takes,” he argued.
“Hamas is not discouraged. On the contrary, it is encouraged by events. Hamas’s leadership is going all the way. Hamas is dragging out the talks with Israel, regarding the release of the captives, and it’s making out as if it wants a significant achievement that will prove that Hamas also cares for the civilian population,” Barak added.
Hamas does not feel under intense pressure, and remains in control of Rafah on Gaza’s southern border, where it maintains a police force along with its four remaining battalions, he said. Israel’s tensions with Egypt over Rafah are another source of encouragement for Sinwar, he said.
Barak recalled how, in the lead-up to the 2011 Glad Shalit deal, which saw Israel release 1,027 Palestinian security prisoners—including Sinwar himself—it was Sinwar who opposed any compromise.
“It was actually Sinwar who kept thwarting the agreement, demanding that Israel release all of the prisoners it had. So what did Israel do? It placed him in solitary confinement, and signed the agreement with Hamas leaders Mahmoud al-Zahar and Salah al-Arouri, and with representatives from the prison,” said Barak. “This all goes to show that Sinwar doesn’t care about burning Gaza, as long as he obtains his desired achievements. From his perspective, [these are] that Israel is isolated in the world [and] facing economic problems, and strengthening the sense of support among the Muslim population both in the Western world and the Muslim world, and also in the West Bank,” he said.
In Israel, protests by hostages’ families also encourage him, as do calls for Netanyahu to resign, he added.
Ultimately, according to Barak, Sinwar is guided by a very strong religious perception, prominent among Islamist jihadist factions, called “somud” in Arabic, meaning “steadfast endurance.” “It means, even if everything looks dark now, everything looks disastrous, you need to prove that you believe in God until the end. And then suddenly God will smile at you. This is what they believe.”

Why Israel doesn’t launch a surprise HAMAS ‘Coup d’Main’ against the commanders of HAMAS is quizzical in the extreme. It isn’t as if Israel doesn’t know exactly where the HAMAS commanders in Qatar are living!
With an excess of 70+% of Gaza Palestinians still supporting HAMAS’ fanatical death cult. It appears that the Gazans civilians are willing victims to HAMAS’ tactics, to use Gazan civilians as targets, in a massive PsyOps campaign in the West.
To WIN all that HAMAS need to do is SURVIVE in Gaza, force the IDF to cut and run before HAMAS is totally destroyed in Rafah. The West refuses to stare that reality in the face because the idea of a religious war in the 21st century is an anathema.
By applying Western pressure that supports a so called ‘Two State Solution’, or suffer Western sanctions on Israel, will allow HAMAS to survive until next time! That is VICTORY for HAMAS as religious war continues forever or until one side is destroyed!
For HAMAS mere survival inside Gaza is considered Victory and causalities are irrelevant as the Arabs are fighting a Holy War for the total destruction of Jews not only in the Middle East but everywhere. Next in line are the Christians, as we all know!
The ‘Two State Solution’ is just a PsyOps operation and the Arabs as a group understand this. Such a solution is a mere canard that will eventually cause an Israeli loss.
The fallout (pardon the pun) from ANY loss by Israel means the destruction of ALL Israelis, and will cause a massive nuclear release, that will decimate the Muslims everywhere. This is also irrelevant to most Arabs, in their heart of hearts! After all this is a Holy War.
The West’s populous has no idea of what a Muslim holy war means, and especially so as the West is now a secular entity, and wilfully can’t even admit that such an idea exists. Muslims everywhere know only too well what the phrase ‘holy war’ ACTUALLY means.
The Shi’a, especially in Iran, even require their personal destruction to release their 12th. Imam on the world. Such is the written plans of Shia everywhere. No wonder that Gazan civilians are so cavalier with their personal destruction, as wilful pawns in HAMAS’ Psyops, even if it means their dying as shields for HAMAS, as they play actors for ‘Pallywood’, in their PsyOps operation targeting Western elites, who have the power to sanction the hated Israelis.
The West and the Israelis themselves must harden their hearts, and admit that ALL Israelis under HAMAS control ,are dead or very soon will be. In Jihad’s total war, there is no quarter, and captured enemies are only worthy of life, when they can be used to manipulate Western actions, that prejudice Israeli freedom of action militarily.
Unless the IDF can concentrate its combat power in Rafah, once the refit , rest, and rearm is complete, the IDF’s professionals must totally destroy HAMAS ‘root and branch’, including the HAMAS leadership in their Qatari penthouses, or Israel loses the battle, until next time, because HAMAS just has to survive to WIN!
Destroying Gaza and its people is totally irrelevant to HAMAS, and especially so to Hezbollah and Iran’s Shi’a. The West can’t rationalise this cruel mindset, but the Arabs know that Western sympathy is considered a weakness in Islam.
Compounding the promotion of the HAMAS Psyops campaign in the West, to damage Israel through sanctions, has a ‘kicker’. The rise of the Fascistic, Marxist Left in the West, who also see the West as their enemy, and anyone against their enemy, is the Left’s friend.
So what to do?
Rest , rearm, and prepare to re-deploy the professional arm of the IDF together with specialist Reservists in key positions.
Totally destroy HAMAS in Gaza
Kill the HAMAS leadership in Qatar in a ‘coup d’ main’ decapitation strike at HAMAS leadership.
Drive the remaining Gazan civilians out of Gaza and into Egypt, Saudi and Jordan even if the Arabs find this objectionable. … and salt the ground! Egypt was given the chance to establish a peaceful Gaza and refused!
Continue to push the Palestinians (AKA Arabs) out of the West back to ensure that Israel has ‘depth ‘ it requires strategically. Where they go is irrelevant and is up the Islam and the Arabs to figure out.
Stabilise the North flank of Israel and drive Hezbollah at least out of tactical range.
Prepare to launch a surprise attack on Iran, to destroy their administration, R & D and nuclear industry, before the much longed for Iranian nuclear capability reaches maturation.
Keep saying to Israelis and the West in general, that a nuclear capable Iran means total thermonuclear warfare in the Middle East.
Make it clear to the West in general, that Israel can’t afford to lose a war and will use the ‘Sampson Protocol’ to bring down the whole house of Islam, if Israel is destroyed. This should also make the Shi’a happy as they’re 12th. Imam can then show up!
Hope like hell that the West reverses the slow invasion of the West by the Islamists, before they reach the 23% of the population, and declare Jihad internally in the West.

Our cohort are currently discussing options for help to a gutless and weak father who has not protected his 9 year old son from his quite evil predatory mother. In this psychologist’s view the boy is lost as he will now have to remember this evil for the rest of his life, and that will warp him in multiple ways, no matter how much counselling he has. Not sure whether this reflects the actual situation but either way it’s terrible for this innocent child.

Yeah, fuck right off Larry. At my suggestion, our HOA changed the bylaws so that there is NO way to buy a house and then rent it out for more than a year w/o HOA approval (in the event it’s owned by a military family who is deployed, etc.).
Our house was used as a rental mostly and even tho the neglect was ‘gentle’, neglect it was. Of course, had that not been the case, we never could have afforded it, but we’ve spent the time (and $$$) to bring it up to the neighborhood standard. The front yard grass now looks like a golf course, the gardens are stunning and we’re not done.

One was the young mother of a 9 month old that had been stabbed critically. The mother who was stabbed badly in an artery handed her baby to a passer by and asked her to look after her baby. She had been stabbed in the aorta and bled out very fast, she dies at the scene.
5 women and 1 guy were killed by the murdered who was identified as a ‘known to Police in Queensland and came from 2,000 miles away from Bondi Junction. A known nutter! A NSW State Police Inspector, (like a US Captain of Police) was alone and patrolling the Mall. There were other Police in the building but she was on her own on the 5th floor and ran towards the killer. He tried to charge her down and she put two into his chest. She then attempted to keep him alive by putting pressure on his wounds and when a couple of civilians arrived to help she attempted to resuscitate him. Unsuccessfully.
Two victims remain critically wounded in Eastern Suburbs A&E and the 9 month old is in Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, in a serious but stable condition.
The NSW Police have recently been infected with ‘woke’ and not been covering themselves with accolades recently. They stood aside and refused to intervene, in a riot outside the Sydney Opera House when 1,000 pro-Palestine crazies went nuts. The NSW Police refused to use the forbidden word ‘Terror’ when dealing with a crazy imam in Western Sydney. I grew up in Bondi Junction in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs. We lived in a duplex in Denison Street down hill from Oxford Street that ran along the ridge through Bondi Junction. Educated from 5-7 at Waverly (the suburb alongside Bondi-Junction at St. Charles Girls’ School, by the ‘real’ nuns. They allowed boys into St. Charles for kindergarten and first and second class.
Walked to and from school alongside Queens Park playing fields between 5-7 years of age to the ridge line through Waverly and Bondi Junction. My First class teacher Sister Saleine (from a family of 12 brothers and her the lone female) taught the boys to play rugby at 6 years of age. She’d hoist up her habit and place kick the rugby ball against a brick walk aiming to hit a target! 🙂 Sister Bonaventure my second class teacher used to give me pictures of the saints for good class work!
Reality struck at 7 years of age when I moved to third class at Marcellin Collage Randwick at Peter’s Corner, where the Marist Brothers ruled with an ‘iron fist’ for 1,400 boys between 7 and 17. Classes of about 70 and cubs, scouts and from 13years, a Battalion of fully armed Army Cadets! Discipline was enforced by canning (just out of the 19th Century Tom Brown’s School Days!). I was a good guy and I still averaged about 2 cuts a day! Amazing now looking back at my education!

Yet Monday night at the Marionite Catholic church a so called 15 year old (seriously do you really expect the media to report honestly? The funeral mass was being recorded live and shown live on the net. There were hundreds inside the church for the funeral mass. As the bishop was being treated on the floor of the church altar, he was also giving his attacker absolution for his attack! The wounded were evacuated and the parishioners arrested the attacker and called the cops.
By the time the first wave of normal street cops arrived there were an additional 500 local Marionite Catholics from surrounding streets outside the church. The Marionite crowd was just standing guard outside the church and the attacker was still inside under control of the partitioners and the 4 wounded were on their way to Liverpool hospital A & E. By 9PM there were 2,000 Syriacs outside the church, and the cops now numbered some 200+ including the rapid response ‘hard men’ of the RAT squad and the ‘Tactical squad’ all gunned up with long arms and wearing body armour, long batons and stun wands including loads of pepper spray and riot shields. Some cops got an accidental dose of their own pepper spray as the wind blew the gas back onto their lines of riot cops. 🙂
Well after 12 AM the Syriac church goers and the 2,000 additional supporters began to drift away and the attacker was eventually given over the the cops and charged. There was NO WAY that a large well muscled guy who looked in his mid 20s, with a full beard, was a 15 year old boy! That is just bullshit!
The real questions being asked is how come a crazy guy kills 6 and wounds 12 in a knife attack gets shot dead. 1,000 Palestinians and associated marxists stage a riot in front of the Sydney Opera House and there is just a token bunch of street cops. This has been a few years ago, but it was at the highest I’d seen in the 40 years I’ve lived here.
Not too far from where I used to live, it topped at 19,000 cu ft/sec (142129 gal). About 15 miles north, levels were at over 30,00 cfps. This isn’t a river or anything either, just a flood control system.
