Happy New Year 2018!

It’s almost here! The New Year! Where we get to keep a little more of our money and Democrats can run on trying to take it back from you.

As is tradition, and probably will be the last time considering the status of the NFL in these parts. we’ll explain the playoff picture. Then will have the over/under on the bargain prices that will be charged for the Super Bowl ad slots this year. Because I’m thinking the audience ain’t what it was.

Here we go…..

In the AFC, the Patriots, Steelers, Jaguars and Chiefs have all clinched their respective divisions, with the Patriots and Steelers getting a first-round bye and will have home field in their first games+-. Wild cards look to be the Ravens and Titans, but the Chargers and Bills are in the hunt, but MUST WIN this week and the Titans must lose.

In the NFC, the Eagles, Vikings and Rams have clinched their divisions. It’s between the Saints and Panthers for the NFC South – If Saints win, they have the division, even if Carolina wins. If Saints lose and Carolina wins, Carolina goes as division champ and Saints go as wild card. If Saints win and Carolina loses or wins, Saints are the champs and Cam Newton leads the wild card team. So…Saints or Panthers are the definite wild card and the Falcons are current favorites for the second wild card (which would mean everyone in the NFC South goes to the playoffs except Jamais Winston. Seahawks are in the hunt only if they win and Atlanta loses.

So here are the matchups for today. I say we should all watch and give the NFL a false sense of security:

Packers @ Lions
Texans @ Colts
Bears @ Vikings
Jets @ Patriots
Redskins @ Giants
Cowboys @ Eagles
Browns @ Steelers
Panthers @ Falcons
Bengals @ Ravens
Bills @ Dolphins
Saints @ Bucs
Jaguars @ Titans
Chiefs @ Broncos
Raiders @ Chargers
49ers @ Rams
Cardinals @ Seahawks

In the NHL, the boys are back on the ice at the following locations:

Toronto @ Vegas
Arizona @ Anaheim
Tampa Bay @ Columbus
Winnipeg @ Edmonton
Pittsburgh @ Detroit
NY Islanders @ Colorado
San Jose @ Dallas
Chicago @ Calgary

In the PGA, everybody is apparently staying home and drinking good champagne.

In the NBA – yeah, no.

And with this, my final column for the year (try to choke back the tears), this is your open thread for Sunday – let’s talk about New Year’s Resolution and savor the #Resisitance that isn’t.  Also we could discuss Jeff Flake’s delusion that he’ll somehow beat Trump in a primary when he couldn’t even hold his Senate seat.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, ALL Y’ALL.

is iran really in the throws of a revolution?

  3. 3 | December 31, 2017 3:52 pm

    @ coldwarrior:
Could be. There might be some interesting fallout from a revolution in Iran. Could both Iran & Iraq be moderating a bit? Deciding that the extreme interpretation of Islam isn’t the way to go?

What will that mean for the radicals, both there and in other places around the world? What will that mean for women, gays, Christians, Jews & other groups?

And how much credit will Obama take?

not yet. It’s in the throes of an uprising. There’s no opposition leader. There are people like Miryam R., the pres. of an independance group, but it’s not as tho people want someone in particular. IF the security services end up standing down, then there’s a chance.

But I think the Saudis will be just fine if the place ends up looking like Libya. Iran bombed a fat cat meeting in Riyadh a week or two ago, trying to decapitate the Gov’t and The Magic Kingdom has had enough. These protests are anything but spontaneous, but who knows just how much control the Saudis have? Once you pull that trigger………

Certainly looks like a good deal of unrest. Whether it is a revolution or not remains to be seen. That is going to depend upon what firepower those protesting have to bring to bear. Being an angry unarmed subject rioting against a heavily armed and ruthless dictatorship is only going to get people killed and discourage the next bunch who think to try this. If, however, those organizing the protests have some military backing, then this might have legs since the current POTUS is not going to betray the budding revolutionaries like the previous pretender in that office did.

I can’t see how any direct help could come from us even if Trump were so inclined. I doubt very much that after 8 yrs of Obama/Brennan we have any assets in Iran antagonistic to the regime.

The Saudis, however, are their mortal enemies and have been aligning with both the U.S. AND Israel to do something about them. My guess is the Saudis have taken the lead, Israeli and U.S. support will be very indirect.

    Oh, nice catch, Joel Pollack

You may have heard something about a ‘bombshell’ NYT story saying it wasn’t the dossier that triggered the FBI investigation, it was that stupid kid Papadopulous (sp?) who told an Aussie diplomat by the name of Alexander Downer that the Russians had dirt on Hillary.

Downer supposedly passed the info to the FBI in July 2016 according to the NYT story.

The problem is the FBI applied for the FISA warrant in June.

    NYT fucks up again

I think it was McMasters who said the 80% of Assad’s fighters are Iranian. Even if that ratio has changed over time, it’s still going to be quite a few. Perhaps we could help by tying them down there so they can’t get home to help the regime. OTOH, if they find out the regime is threatening their families, they’re going home in bare feet if they have to and the mullahs will be facing their own military.

A “Monster Of A Storm” Could Hit The East Coast Next Week

The potential for a strong coastal storm system is increasing next week as multiple pieces of energy come together. However, where this system tracks remains highly uncertain and will ultimately determine sensible weather impacts along the East Coast. Subtle changes to the forecast may be the difference between a snowstorm or more Arctic cold and little or no snowfall,” said Ed Vallee, a meteorologist who specializes in Northeast weather.

As the New Year’s festivities begin, the increasing threat of a major East Coast snowstorm is possible for the second half of the upcoming week. Recent Weather Channel computer models are in agreement that a surface low-pressure system will develop off the Southeast coast Wednesday, then charge up the coast towards the north-northeast over the western Atlantic Ocean Thursday. According to the report, “this low will also intensify at a rapid pace thanks to a sharpening southward plunge of the jet stream into the eastern U.S.”

WikiLeaks Drops Proof That NYTimes Colluded With Hillary Clinton

You thought 2017 was going to end without a bang — other than the fireworks?

    Think again.

After The New York Times on Saturday published a story headlined “Republican Attacks on Mueller and F.B.I. Open New Rift in G.O.P.,” WikiLeaks couldn’t stand it anymore. In a late-night post on Twitter, WikiLeaks revealed that a Times reporter used to feed State Department email updates of the stories the paper would be publishing DAYS before the stories appeared.

At the time, Hillary Clinton was the Secretary of State.

The heads-up email was intended to give State (and Clinton) time to come up with some spin for stories that may have caused problems. Or, in another possible scenario, the heads up could give the State Department time to create a diversion for the same day, thus overriding a damaging story with other news its friends in the mainstream media would happily cover instead.

The players in the WikiLeaks email are interesting. Scott Shane is the national security reporter for the Times. And the recipient of his email, Philip Crowley, was at the time the United States Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs under Clinton’s State Department.

As 2017 comes to an end, it’s clear the Clinton scandals won’t go away anytime soon.

yep. That narrative is falling apart and Nunes is about to throw the book at the FBI for not turning over the documents. The only move they have is to discredit the documents. Hence, the new story.

Unfortunately, the new story doesn’t work. It has the Aussies reporting the drunk Greek’s remarks to the FBI in July 2016

    Happy New Year!!!!!

The new year is a time to make resolutions. I have a long list of things I must change in my life.

My list of things to change.

1, I will change my socks every couple of days instead of once a week.

2, I will clean the bathroom every week instead of once every six months.

3, I will stop looking at pictures of Melania Trump and having naughty thoughts.

4, I will stop drinking the cheapest beer Walmart sells.

5, I will start eating salad.

    The list goes on……

Most importantly I set myself a goal, a starting date to change my way of life.

Happy New Year! Had a really nice New Year Eve, but quiet. Lobster tails and a really good wine.
Then watched the ball drop and got some sleep. Woke up this morning with my game face on! This
    is probably the best day for college football all season, Notre Dame/LSU; Michigan/ S Carolina;
Georgia/ Oklahoma; Clemson/ Alabama. Yeah baby!
But wait! Things went sideways, FNC reported this morning that Illinois has declared August 1 “Barack Obama Day”
    WTF! Barack freakin Obama Day!

2018 is going to be the year Obama’s treachery is completely exposed. Assuming 365 days is enough

I posted a day or two ago about the commander of the Iranian Guard, Soleimani, who a lot of people think has been killed recently, but Iran is trying to hide it. Look at this

<emKuwaiti report: US gives Israel go-ahead to kill powerful Iranian general

Three years ago, Israel came close to assassinating Soleimani near Damascus, al-Jarida quoted unnamed source as saying, but the Americans tipped off the Iranians against the background of intense disagreement between Washington and Jerusalem.

That was during the Obama administration, which, according to reports at the time, was so focused on securing the 2015 Iran nuclear accord that it chose to overlook and even obstruct efforts to clamp down on Iranian-backed terror organizations.

That’s right. Obama tipped off Iran. It appears that now Iran is saying he has been wounded but on Dec 28 there was a gov’t report w/an undated photo saying he had met with Islamic scholars in Qom. Pretty good for a wounded guy.

I remember some years ago a report ultimately sourced to the Stars and Stripes. It was late in Obama’s 1st term or early in the 2nd. The report said that the Podesta group had purchased a house – in Dubai? – that was assumed to be for Obama. Maybe he thought that could be his bolt hole. The way things are going, mebbe not……..

The parade is gonna be awesome!

I hadn’t realized this: [In 2017] No jets crashed in passenger service anywhere in the world.

No wonder CNN got stuck on a white truck

St. Patrick’s Day (Celebrated – parade) is really terrible here in Pittsburgh as well.

Asshole quotient goes up by about 20.

    i went once. never again

I said the same thing about Mardi Gras when I moved to New Orleans.

We have two parades in Chicago, downtown and South Side. The South Side Parade is a lot less political.
