Says Professor Emeritus John Peter Maher:

Not “Mas” /Peter Maas, but me. i went to Dubrovnik on 25 March 1992 and filmed the Old City. It was miraculously restored — 3 months after its destruction (Voice of America). In the Old City the house of artist Ivo Grbić had been firebombed by Croats, not navy guns. His shingle read ICONS & IKONE (in Serbian Cyrillic). On 1 October 1991, 7000 Croats and 3000 Serbs fled for their lives from Dubrovnik to Serbia. Croatian squatters now live in the stolen homes. -JP Maher, Professor Emeritus

Gov Moonbeam: New state law requires LGBT history in textbooks

This is not going to go over very well in flyover country.

Sacramento

Public schools in California will be required to teach students about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans starting Jan. 1 after Gov. Jerry Brown on Thursday signed a controversial bill to add the topic to the social sciences curriculum.

Textbooks now must include information on the role of LGBT Americans, as well as Americans with disabilities, though California’s budget crisis has delayed the purchasing of new books until at least 2015.

“History should be honest,” Brown, a Democrat, said in a statement. “This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books.”

The governor called the legislation, SB48, introduced by Sen. Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, “historic.”

The law – the first of its kind in the nation – adds the two groups to an existing list of minority and other groups that are required to be part of the social sciences curriculum.

Beyond California

The provision on inclusion in textbooks could reach beyond California, too, as many book publishers tailor their texts to California’s standards because of the state’s large population. The bill does not prescribe how schools will teach the subject, and Leno said that decision will be made by local school officials and teachers.

“What the bill calls for is for the contributions of LGBT people to be included,” Leno said, adding, “We wrote it broadly for a reason. We would be subject to more criticism than we’ve already been getting if we were more dictatorial.”

Leno said the mandates apply broadly, though, telling reporters it would affect kindergarten through high school curriculum, “and, of course, in an age-appropriate way.”

Gay rights advocates said they will be vigilant about making sure schools across California comply.

The Saudi Money at News Corp/FoxNews Speaks Up

Just wondering out loud…

It would be interesting to know if the Saudis have any control on what goes on in the US arm of News Corp/Fox News.

LONDON, July 14 (Reuters) – A major News Corp shareholder said on Thursday that News International Chief Executive Rebekah Brooks should quit because of a telephone hacking scandal that has engulfed the company.

“For sure she has to go, you bet she has to go,” Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal told the BBC’s Newsnight programme.

The scandal has piled pressure on Brooks, who has not resigned despite a call from former friend Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians to do so.

“Ethics to me is very important, definitely. I will not tolerate to deal with a company that has a lady or a man that has any sliver of doubt on her or his integrity,” Alwaleed said.

Alwaleed says his Kingdom Holding is the second biggest shareholder in News Corp and controls seven percent of the votes.

The perfect assistant. The builder of esteem. The positive influence.

While you think he’s just being agreeable, he has nefarious purposes known only to him. Never trust The Yes Man.

The Yes Man says, “Go ahead. Do it. It’s the right thing to do. You’re on the right track,” and then he kicks you in the nuts and steals your lunch.  He smiles while telling you lies that you can’t detect until it’s too late. He’s always encouraging you to jump.

The Yes Man is not a team player, regardless of what he says. By all accounts, he gets along with the group, yet he’s always looking out for Number One. Unfortunately, you’re Number Two – at most.

So who is The Yes Man? He’s the voice in the back of your head who won’t shut up. He yammers constantly, keeps you awake at night, sings songs you can’t stand, and tells you that it’s time for The Overnight Open Thread.
