Rand Paul spoke at a Howard University. Although the audience was hostile, they agreed with Rand Paul on several issues, reduced drug sentencing being one of them.

Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul, widely considered a possible candidate for the 2016 presidential race, put outreach into action with a speech Wednesday morning at Howard University, a historically black college.

The talk covered a variety of political topics from foreign policy to education but Paul laid out the broader purpose in his speech, saying:

I come to Howard today, not to preach, or prescribe some special formula for you but to say I want a government that leaves you alone, that encourages you to write the book that becomes your unique future. You are more important than any political party, more important than any partisan pleadings.

Paul’s appearance was significant; he’s only the second elected Republican to speak at Howard University in the last thirty years.

Paul also took about a dozen questions from the audience, which included students and faculty from the liberal school. Despite obvious disagreements on most policy issues, the exchanges were civil and Senator Paul managed to lay out principled positions without being confrontational.

I wish more Republicans would do this. In order to survive, they must. But the Corrupt Consultant Class refuses to do this.

This is how Rand Paul handled an ideological hostile question.

The Right needs to study this very carefully and instead of calling people evil moochers, educate them with dialogue.

Kudus to Rand Paul for this brave act!

We're not easily offended and don't want people to think they have to walk on eggshells around here (like at another place that shall remain nameless) but of course, there is a limit to everything.

Play nice!
