AGS is a public school whereas Kings’ College is a private school where you pay $30k a year for the privilege of getting an education and an extra $12 K if you need to go into a school boarding house… for the same education at AGS for zip. Actually the AGS alumni are so powerful that the school tells the education minister what they are going to do and NOT the other way around! That power comes with being the first secondary school in NZ ( it’s the AGS 150th Anniversary this year). In fact the reputation at AGS for academic and sporting excellence is such that it can be VERY selective when it comes to selection staff. It has over 50 former All Blacks, dozens of Olympians , Captains of industry, the military and judiciary in its Alumni.
Government occasionally attempts to financially bring AGS to heel, but the Headmaster just gets the extra funding from its Alumni and bypasses government totally. The school turns out outstanding young men. I know as both my sons are AGS ‘Old Boys’ and I have been a volunteer tutor at the Learning Support Unit for 26 years.
