i was not a big fan of ghurka cigars, each time i had one they either burned wrong or fell apart.

now, after 3 months in the humidor…well…not too bad. it seems they needed to rest on a bed of spanish cedar and mingle with cigars in a humidified box.

Breaking: Trump Announces New Timeline For Coronavirus Guidelines, Projected Peak

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that his administration was extending the social distancing guidelines for the entire month of April in an effort to halt the spread of the coronavirus.

“I want the American people to know that your selfless inspiring and valiant efforts are saving countless lives,” Trump said. “You are making the difference. The modeling estimates that the peak in death rate is likely to hit in two weeks, so I will say it again, the peak, highest point of death rates, remember this, is likely to hit in two weeks.”

“Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before the victory is won,” Trump continued. “That would be the greatest loss of all. Therefore, the next two weeks and during this period, it’s very important that everyone strongly follow the guidelines, have to follow the guidelines that our great vice president holds up a lot. He’s holding that up a lot. He believes it in so strongly.”

Leaked out today into the Ministry of Education briefing notes.

New estimate for the Lock-Down blows out from 4 weeks to a minimum of 6-8 weeks minimum.

The leaked it to slowly get the populous conditioned to face doubling of the time locked away.

The cops are estimating that we have 2-3 more weeks of quiet before the violence begins to ramp up with Domestic Violence cases spikin first.

Folks are scared here and by mid April the ‘cabin – fever’ will begin to show.

Some really dumb things going on like gas stations locking their toilets for staff only forcing long distance truckers to find alternate places to have a shit! The truckers are pissed off. Ministry of Internal Affairs totally dropped the ball on it and other Ministries are whistling looking at the ceiling and muttering … ” not out business” … so to speak!

…The new danger was that when the peasants finally refused to deliver produce to the towns, the towns would go and fetch it. It had happened in Austria during the blockade. It had happened in the Ruhr and the Rhineland under the provocation of French militarism and enforced idleness. Now there were reports from Saxony -unoccupied Germany — that bands of several hundred townspeople at a time had taken to riding out into the countryside on bicycles to confiscate what they needed.

Anna Eisenmenger’s diary included a first-hand account of the plunder of Linz and its neighbourhood in Austria — the place which Hitler regarded as his home town. She transcribed a letter from her daughter who had been staying there for a few weeks with cousins who ran a small farm with eight cows, two horses, twelve pigs and the usual poultry:

    Come gather ’round people

    And admit that the waters
    Around you have grown

You’ll be drenched to the bone.
    If your time to you
    Is worth savin’
    Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.
    Come writers and critics
    Who prophesize with your pen
    And keep your eyes wide
    The chance won’t come again
    And don’t speak too soon
For the wheel’s still in spin
    And there’s no tellin’ who
    That it’s namin’.
    For the loser now
    Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin’.
    Come senators, congressmen
    Please heed the call
    Don’t stand in the doorway
    Don’t block up the hall
    For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
    There’s a battle outside
    And it is ragin’.
    It’ll soon shake your windows
    And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’.
    Come mothers and fathers
    Throughout the land
    And don’t criticize
    What you can’t understand
    Your sons and your daughters
    Are beyond your command
    Your old road is
    Rapidly agin’.
Please get out of the new one
If you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’.
    The line it is drawn
    The curse it is cast
    The slow one now
    Will later be fast
    As the present now
    Will later be past
    The order is

This SO reminds me of the early 80’s and the AIDS epidemic in San Francisco. CDC finds AIDS is transmitted through blood and blood products. Don Francis is dispatched to San Francisco to explain to the “Gay Community” that sexual transmission is causing the epidemic. Recommends closing bath houses and other sexual haunts. Director of Public Health, Spineless Silverman, actually puts it to a VOTE of bathhouse owners and gay activists. Bath houses stay open. AIDS spread and people die.

Meanwhile, looking for a scapegoat, they decided to make it all Reagan’s fault that they were idiots.

no. The numbers used in the models being quoted don’t/can’t take into account the pharma advances being made. I forget the numbers of hydroxochlorquine tablets en route but it’s significant. Plus the vaccine, plus people getting smarter about hygiene, plus warm weather.

The vaccine won’t help this cycle, but it will next. Probably. Mutations, etc.

I have to laugh. There’s this app called NextDoor where everybody in the ‘hood posts messages, pets lost and found, furniture for sale, etc.

Somebody busybody posted ‘You all have to PLEASE stop going to the grocery store!” Got asked how she knew we were at the grocery store if she wasn’t there herself.

Meh. That’s probably just for the cheap online access where you can’t opt-out of answering their irrelevant questions other than Enumeration=x. Next they’ll send you the full form in the mail (probably COVID-19 infected) to fill out. After ignoring that, they’ll send out the canvassing agents (probably COVID-19 infected) so you can answer the Enumeration=x question then trespass them off of your property when they continue pressing for answers to the irrelevant questions.

    YMMV.

WASHINGTON — In late November 2018, just over a year before the first coronavirus case was identified in Wuhan, China, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at Detroit Metro Airport stopped a Chinese biologist with three vials labeled “Antibodies” in his luggage.

The biologist told the agents that a colleague in China had asked him to deliver the vials to a researcher at a U.S. institute. After examining the vials, however, customs agents came to an alarming conclusion.

“Inspection of the writing on the vials and the stated recipient led inspection personnel to believe the materials contained within the vials may be viable Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) materials,” says an unclassified FBI tactical intelligence report obtained by Yahoo News.

The report, written by the Chemical and Biological Intelligence Unit of the FBI’s Weapons of Mass Destruction Directorate (WMDD), does not give the name of the Chinese scientist carrying the suspected SARS and MERS samples, or the intended recipient in the U.S. But the FBI concluded that the incident, and two other cases cited in the report, were part of an alarming pattern.

    I was afraid of this.

Migrant Fieldworkers in Florida Laid Off Due to Coronavirus Pandemic

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Sixty-three migrant workers arrived in back home in Mexico after their contract was terminated with their employer

The fieldworkers were hired to pick berries for four months, but their contracts were terminated after two weeks. All of them were in the U.S. on a temporary H-2A visa.

Antonio Tovar with the Farmworkers Association of Florida said growers normally terminate employees during the peak fruit season because of economic hardships caused by disasters, such as the coronavirus pandemic.

“This is the first case that we have related to the illness,” Tovar said.

The U.S. Department of State deemed agricultural workers as “essential.” But the 63 employees said they didn’t feel that way.

“The contract didn’t work like we wanted too, and we’re just disappointed,” Antonio, one of the workers, said.

The U.S. Department of State made adjustments to help H-2A workers and employers during the pandemic including expanding “the categories of H-2 visa applicants whose applications can be adjudicated without an in-person interview.”

The workers said they tried to move to another job for an out-of-state grower in Georgia but were unable to come to a deal with their contractor.

The contractor did not want to comment on the situation.

The workers said per their contract they will be paid three-quarters of the agreed payment.

It’s behind a paywall so I can’t get to it, but the Telegraph has a piece on Neil Ferguson, the epidemiologist who fucked up the pandemic numbers. It isn’t the first time. Jordan Schactel has summarized

    https://twitter.com/JordanSchachtel/status/1243976303696662529

This is brutal for the cult of the One And Only Expert: “Neil Ferguson, the scientist who convinced Boris Johnson of UK coronavirus lockdown, criticised in past for flawed research”

“Ferguson has been criticized in the past for making predictions based on allegedly wrong assumptions which nevertheless shaped government strategies and impacted the British economy.

“He was behind controversial research that triggered the mass slaughter of farm animals during the 2001 FMD epidemic, which cost the country billions of pounds.”

“He predicted that up to 150,000 people could die from bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, or “mad cow disease”) & its equivalent in sheep if it made leap in humans. To date, there have been < 200 deaths from human form of BSE & 0 deaths from sheep-to-human transmission."

Ending thread by reminding you all that his modeling is based on blindly making massive assumptions about COVID-19. Most important:
    1) COVID-19 death rate at WHO astronomical numbers
    2) Blind guesswork re asymptomatic spread

& he refuses to make his code open to public scrutiny.

Two important things out of Birx/Fauci today

The models use available data and most of that data is coming from NY

As more data comes in, it gets fed into the models (and I’m assuming the models get adjusted when needed, altho that wasn’t said specifically)

That means the models are working with a catastrophic scenario that should paint and ‘gentler’ picture as time goes on

However, I’m pretty sure the models don’t have data from drug therapy so there’s one variable not included

Actually, C gets quite a bit of use in various places. No one uses FORTRAN anymore. We have many tools written in C by both software developers and algorithm developers. It has kind of become the standard for R&D and development activities. Most analysts have migrated to higher level languages like MATLAB, and some of the scripting languages, but C is pretty widespread. C++ is also in use but comes with some baggage.

MATLAB is written in C/C++, so they’re only 1 level up, just using an interface w/handy functions in a library

At the time the climate geniuses were beginning to write code, they didn’t have a lot of choices; Fortran, Assembler, COBOL. Cobol simply didn’t have the functionality they needed (they thought), Assembler is basically machine language, so Fortran it was.

And the code snippets I saw were sad – what should have been coded as a run-time parameter was hard coded, for example. And they had zero concept of a ‘library’.

Years ago, when the conversion from FORTRAN to C code was going on, one of the algorithm guys who was an old Fortran coder from the beginning was sweating having to learn C because that’s what the sim was being coded in and his stuff had to work with it. He came to one of the other developers one day smiling, “I’ve got this C stuff figured out! I found the GOTO statement!”

He may or may not be a decent epidemiologist – from what I posted above re problems with his previous predictions, probably not.

Not going to argue with you on that. He appears to be an alarmist who takes great pleasure in the notoriety he gets with apocalyptic predictions.

Point. Missed. This is a human endeavor and humans have to understand it and work with it. Tens of thousands of lines of code – which is what Ferguson claims he wrote – had damn well better be ‘pretty’ or it’s unfixable/unmaintainable. Even if it’s your own. I’ve had to go back to code I wrote 6 mos earlier and had to think again about what I had been doing/why certain decisions were made. So even if he is the only person who ever works with it, when he has to make mods/fixes, he’d better hope it’s ‘pretty’. I promise you, it’s not easy, not in C.

“I’ve got this C stuff figured out! I found the GOTO statement!”

unconditional jumps are discouraged in ANY language, but I allowed them on my team in certain design configs. Just label the bastards.

FWIW, I’ve written C code during my career. Code needs to be modular, not pretty. Oh, and it has to pass test cases properly, if not, it’s garbage. The code base I am thinking of is many 10’s of thousands of lines of code. It is modular, some of the modules not “pretty” in terms a CS major would label them.

/Now, I haven’t seen what the epidemiologist wrote (apparently no one has). So a) he needs to let it be peer reviewed, or b) at a minimum, it has to be able to produce credible test cases to verify validity of the underlying algorithms. If it can’t do that, it’s garbage.

    modular is pretty

That’s one of the good aspects of the much-maligned COBOL. It enforces at least SOME modularity, altho god knows I’ve seen some rotten COBOL too.

I don’t know how this guy could get a peer-review on the code. Epidemiologts aren’t developers, developers aren’t epidemiologists. I would think there are enough case histories, tho, to see if the model successfully handles the regression analysis.

yeah, it definitely can be. But I’ve encountered some really interesting people from all over the world and WONDERFUL history sites and even authors I read that I get to talk to a bit. A sheep farmer in Ireland with dogs and a famous cat, a farmer in India that knows about water issues. I love it.

Terry Teachout’s wife died this evening. He’s the theater critic for WSJ, etc. Wonderful writer, has been writing about his wife, etc. And HE suffers from TDS, saying Trump blamed health care workers for the disappearance of PPE/masks etc. He wrote that even while she was dying. He just HAD to. Which is not supported by any fact, so even in my dotage, I’ve learned some hard lessons about human nature. TDS is like anti-semitism. It’s a pathology that satisfies a need.

My god, make the stupid stop. How I see things in my corner of the Great White North. Everything deemed non-essential is shut down. Public Health has decreed a maximum customer occupancy of grocery stores of 50 people. Toilet paper stocks are still low. Flour stocks as well still low. Lots of goods are manageable but mostly low.

We are getting families that are coming in to shop. Not school age kids, university age kids with their parents. Stupidity on parade. People are coming in daily to pick up groceries it seems, not new people, the same people. Almost as if it’s the only social outlet that they have.

Yesterday when I left work, people were practiscing social distancing while lined up to get into the grocery store. STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FUCKING PARKING LOT THOROUGHFARE!!!! I had to blow my horn in order for them to get off their damned cell phone to move out of my god dammned way. I am sure that there is a smarter way to line up and such, not by acting like traffic pylons though.

We’ve been stressed to the max in the grocery store. First the panic buying then the limitations brought down by governments of all levels, then there’s the constant corporate changes coming down practically hourly.

Sales have been dropping, which means some departments have been slowly cut back that aren’t deemed necessary. Some staff members have opted to stay home for health reasons. It’s going to get ugly up here.
