Lots of stuff happened, but apparently none more important than Trump putting his signature on paper stimulus checks. Carry on…

I would say about 30 %. The other possibility is Hillary becomes his running mate and then old Joe is a victim of Arkanicide.

Customers and employees will soon be required to wear masks inside businesses still operating, and those who don’t wear masks will be denied entry, Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said Wednesday.

The order, which includes dozens of other requirements, will go into effect 8 p.m. Sunday

And now for some complete different 🙂

This is and it is true, no joke: a hazel dormouse bridge

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwfrrAoxaJw

Problem is: hazel dormice live only on one side of the bridge and NO the craziness doesn’t end here: they plan another bridge along this street for hazel dormice. AND there is now a an authorized person who collects hazel dormice excrements to figure out if the hazel dormice use properly the bridge.

The village is in Bavaria named Vilshofen

    @ Guggi:

What prompted this? Was there a sudden increase of dormouse bodies on the road?

In Florida, they’ve made crossings for wild cats – I’m not sure what kind of cat exactly – because the road building disrupted their habitat. So now they can go under the road.

I’m not laughing. It’s a good thing that people care about animals. Even if we do eat them. Some of them. Not bats, though.

You mean like the seldom used ‘Reserve Power of the Crown that can dissolve parliament if the good of the people is in peril and force new elections within 6 weeks?

Doesn’t happen much . Only twice I think in the 20th Century. Oz’s Governor General did it during the Whitlam Labour Government in the 1970s I think for colluding with certain Abab interests and a LARGE sum of money. It was a race between The G.G Kerr and PM Whitlam. BOTH had the power to sack the other. Kerr struck first and the Labour government was no more. The Liberal Coalition won a landslide victory 6 weeks later but alas after the fact we discovered that the Liberal Party leader Malcolm Fraser was a silver spoon socialist arsehole.

Still Whitlem was destroyed so it was a partial win.

What? Force the Congress into recess? Yes. The president has the power under the Constitution to do exactly that. Read Article II, which is, of course, on the executive branch, Section 3, titled “State of the Union, Convening Congress.” It states in full about the president that:

    .
    .
“[H]e may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper.” Of course, there are caveats. First, it must be an extraordinary occasion. Second, the two houses of Congress must disagree about the time of adjournment. Both can be finessed. On the first point, Obama can actually reasonably argue that the number of presidential appointments held up by Republicans (we’ll get to the numbers in a minute) is so large as to constitute an extraordinary circumstance.

Did you catch that? This argument was made for Obama to adjourn Congress because Congress was slow confirming his appointments – the exact same reason Trump is citin.

Of course they are. It’s the …..” if we can’t use the straits then nobody is going to use it.”

The Straits of Malacca use a system where armed counter pirate guards board vessels at the top of the strait and guard the ship as it travels south. Each guard picks up US$10k. Then they have a few days off in Singapore and pick up a north bound freighter…. getting another US$10k for their trouble.

Nice work if you can get it. I know quite a few guys doing this. They belong to B Squadron NZ SAS and do two years contracting before returning to the Regiment for 2 years.

No , but a lot of evidence points to that the were running tests on the virus and harvested it from horseshoe bats.
Sadly either wittingly or unwittingly the US was helping to fund the research.

The Epoch Times is a fairly new media outlet. They also produce a newspaper we subscribe to and you can get on their email list. On twitter they are @EpochTimes. The legacy media made an attempt to take them down last year when they started a rumor mill that they are a Falun Gong front organization. There are a lot of Chinese staffers, some may be Falun Gong – the editors refused to satisfy with answers saying it is nobody’s business – and they definitely never miss a chance to go after China but there’s a lot of other good reporting, too.

I should say we get their newspaper because my husband won’t read it online. It’s here.

Somehow, that got heard and the Obama admin cut Shi Zhing-Li’s funding back in 2015 (I think it was 2015). There was nothing secret about her or what she was doing. The documentary has video of her making speeches about it academic conferences. The film is about 55 minutes, well worth your time.

    Today’s NYT

HONG KONG — After 16 years in China, a Congolese businessman thought he knew what being black there entailed. He had been subjected to racial slurs and denied apartments, but he had also learned Chinese and made local friends. He loved the country; he called it his second home.

But the businessman, Felly Mwamba, had not anticipated the coronavirus pandemic, during which he would find himself sealed in his home, prohibited from leaving and eyed as a carrier of the disease, simply because he was African.

“The way they are treating black people, you cannot accept,” Mr. Mwamba said by telephone. “We are not animals.”

Actually, I think the idea is rather new, historically speaking. From the history I’ve read it was quite common to believe in the relative superiority of races, it seemed too obvious to be discussed. And let’s not talk about slavery. One of the most famous slaves in the world invented what we would call shorthand. He belonged to Cicero and his name was Tiro. We still use his ampersand. Slavery was not a state to be desired, but it wasn’t a racial issue.

It stars JK Simmons as a low level operative with no clearance (unaware that this even happened, as is most of the world at large) in an intelligence agency on one side, while his counterpart is a much higher level agent in the other timeline.

The series doesn’t (or hasn’t really gotten into the how or why of the event, but focuses on the spycraft between worlds and the drama involved among these few in the intelligence community that have knowledge of the event, and the effects decisions made on the lives of the same people in different timelines.

    Throw away the key

Former employee of medical packaging company charged with sabotaging electronic shipping records leading to the delay of PPE to healthcare providers

On March 29, 2020, Christopher Dobbins allegedly conducted a computer intrusion that disrupted and delayed the medical device packaging company’s shipments of personal protective equipment (“PPE”).

While employed at the company, Dobbins had administrator access to the computer systems containing the company’s shipping information. In early March 2020, Dobbins was terminated from his employment at the company, losing his access to the company’s computer systems. On March 26, Dobbins received his final paycheck from the company. Three days later, Dobbins used a fake user account that he had previously created while employed at the company to log into the company’s computer systems.

Once logged in through the fake user account, Dobbins allegedly created a second fake user account and then used that second account to edit approximately 115,581 records and delete approximately 2,371 records. After taking these actions, the complaint alleges, Dobbins deactivated both fake user accounts and logged out of the system. The edits and deletions to the company’s records disrupted the company’s shipping processes, causing delays in the delivery of much-needed PPEs to healthcare providers.

    Flu stats

A total of 19,713 influenza-related hospitalizations were reported between October 1, 2019 and March 28, 2020. 72% were associated with Influenza A and 27% were Influenza B, which is a reversal of early season numbers when Influenza B was more dominant.

The overall cumulative hospitalization rate was 67.9 per 100,000 population over the same time period. This number is higher than all recent seasons during the same time period, except for the 2017-18 season. Hospitalization rates in children 0-4 years old and adults 18-49 years old are the highest on record according to the CDC, surpassing the rate reported during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.

That was stated as equivalent to the flu, that’s why nobody got upset and nobody remembers it.

Fauci is saying this is a whole different ‘thing’.

To be clear, I am not a Fauci skeptic. He deals with the data he has and nobody knows anything until the after-the-fact numbers are in.

The problem I have with his analysis is this: anecdotally, there is an unknown number of asymptomatic/test-positive people who are or are not infectious. There is never any denominator. Until we have that, there is no basis for calculating the R0 (R-naught) value, the measure of just how infectious this thing is.

Especially if you take into account the more than numerous stories of people on the west coast – and coldwarrior, et al. – who had something ‘funny’ last year.

No denominator, no numbers worth the powder to blow them to hell

I view him a bit differently. He is a ‘scientist’ and I put the word in quotes because in his world, the evidence or lack thereof is the driver. Practical experience has null value. What the layman hears as ‘hyperbolic’ is Fauci looking at the data he DOESN’T have. 5 days ago, everybody was saying he insisted on a total testing of the entire population. No he wasn’t. In his mind, he was addressing a technical issue.

I was married to one of these. His personal failings notwithstanding, if I asked him what the weather was like his answer was ‘Where?’. He was trying to be helpful.

It’s unreasonable to expect him to be successful in a world he’s never practiced in – Trump media. He is evidence driven and humanity’s frustration with his ‘prophecy’ shouldn’t be laid at his feet. It will be anyway, but it’s not his fault.

I’ve seen all the crap about his hagiography of Hillary. My take is ‘so what?’. Having spent decades with his ilk, I’m all too familiar with their utter incompetence when it comes to real life. He is dedicated to being the best he can be in figuring this out and fixing it and that’s all anyone can reasonably ask of him.

I don’t know if this is good news or bad news but it looks like solid numbers so..

Antibody research indicates coronavirus may be far more widespread than known

The first large-scale community test of 3,300 people in Santa Clara County found that 2.5 to 4.2% of those tested were positive for antibodies — a number suggesting a far higher past infection rate than the official count.

Based on the initial data, researchers estimate that the range of people who may have had the virus to be between 48,000 and 81,000 in the county of 2 million — as opposed to the approximately 1,000 in the county’s official tally at the time the samples were taken.

“Our findings suggest that there is somewhere between 50- and 80-fold more infections in our county than what’s known by the number of cases than are reported by our department of public health,” Dr. Eran Bendavid, the associate professor of medicine at Stanford University who led the study, said in an interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer.

Is it really tho? The way I read the numbers – and I’m a lay person so What Do I Know? is in full force – I think it says the virus has been around for a long time; it’s incredibly infectious; its fatality rate is around that of the flu

If that’s the right interpretation about its really high R0, then it’s NOT good news.

    look at this

Dairy Farmers of America says its members are dumping out 3.7 million gallons of milk a day, and the farmers say they can’t donate it to food banks because dairy processing plants are closing down due to lack of demand or to protect their workers.

    .
    .
Most meat is processed at giant facilities, creating a weak point in the production chain. One of the largest pork processing plants in the U.S., in South Dakota, shut down Sunday as the virus spread through its workforce, and the coronavirus-linked closure of two of the seven biggest U.S. beef processing facilities has reduced beef production by up to 25 percent, The Washington Post reports. Industry officials are warning of hoarding, especially of cheaper cuts of meat.

“The first problem is we don’t have enough people to process the animals, and No. 2 is they can’t do carcass balance because restaurants are down,”

There is a catastrophic misalignment between supply and demand. We are oversupplied everywhere NOW. But just wait.

Oh, Perdue just said milk would go to food banks. That’s a HUGE help, nobody was getting thru to him, hubby spent an hour on the phone yesterday yelling at people. The issue tho may not be solved. Food banks need refigeration.

Anyhow, the hard facts are that the labor shortages on the farms is due to low wages. It is brutally hard work but the pay doesn’t reflect that. Farmers are so accustomed to making next to nothing that paying other people market rates seems obscene to them. But they are locked into gov’t subsidies so their costs are distorted and all of a sudden you’ve lost the pricing signal.

That has to change. We would all be paying more for food but that’s the only way out of this I see.

It never failed but some hot-shit new marketing VP would make it to the executive dining room and promise the board the moon. Then he’d come down to IT where the actual work was done, start snapping his fingers and get his ass kicked.

It also never failed that there was a direct back door channel between the board and the IT department so the board always did a reality check with us while Golden Boy was still in the elevator coming down from the Penthouse to the bowels of the machine room.

I lost count of the marketing VPs I had to leash-train.

    @ coldwarrior:

When Bonnie was so ill and I really couldn’t leave the house for any period of time, I used grocery delivery services all the time. They’re wonderful BUT you pay a premium for the fee and the tip (I’m a generous tipper, those guys got 30% because they lugged those groceries from the truck to my actual kitchen counter, bless them). But I learned to order a few days early so they could get stuff from the warehouse if needed, or make substitutions if needed, none of this 4 hour time frame. It requires some planning – oh, crap, I forgot the chocolate chip cookies! doesn’t cut it.

    good god

Chlorine Dioxide can kill the coronavirus, that’s been proven. What they don’t tell you is that it’s safe to add to water and drink at low, responsible doses. Where is that for breaking news? Instead, they feed you blatant propaganda. That should be a crime against humanity.

I thought twitter was banning unverified med advice

I believe this is what we added to our water during the Everglades Outward Bound Expedition, it is apparently an anti-microbial, but who the hell drinks penicillin? It doesn’t work like that.

Sounds like another fish tank cleaner debacle waiting to happen. It’s not hard to kill viruses on surfaces. And there’s no evidence that it can spread through the water supply.

Human civilization is a slap in the face to the idea of Darwinism.

Anyhoo, it looks like Purdue is giving dairy farmers less than a dollar per hundred weight. I won’t bore you with the metrics but it’s not enough to make a difference. Food banks are a fine idea but not many have refrigerators, so…they’ll keep dumping milk

that flatscreen that i cant take to the recycling center because virus…cut that up with my saws-all and put it in garbage bags. same for these two old lap tops.

    i’m done.

Been there for years. Most recycling is actually more wasteful than just sending things to the landfill. … and nobody’s buying the plastic anyway. It all winds up in the landfill and you wind up paying that “recycling fee” for what could have been just the cost of garbage.

/Oh, and WM sucks. Bigtime. In our neighborhood, we had a small private firm for a reasonable price until the 2007 crash. They sold out to WM. Things continued for a while, then they made us use their big container. Then prices kept going up, 10% or more a year. Then the fuel surcharge. The last time I used, them, they were wanting $37.50 per month for trash — no recycling. There was a small company starting up with really good prices, $10 per month. Went well for about 9 months, they over-extended and dumped us. Lots of people in the neighborhood went back to WM because WM offered some great rates, about $12 per month. I’m a contrary so and so, I don’t believe in rewarding bad behavior. I know if WM gets the ascendency, we’ll be back to $30+ a month in a few short years. Found another local that is higher than the “get you hooked” WM rate, but will be cheaper in a year or so.

I know that shooting them out of the sky will get you in trouble, but I think some anonymous air to air action would be entertaining and safer for those engaging in it. No projectiles, I’m thinking more along the lines of battle-bots,

The truth is painful but inescapable. We produce more milk than is needed to meet demand. The economics are 1st grade level.

Some years ago New Zealand bit the bullet and let Darwin have at it. They now have a sustainable dairy industry.

Very true Eagles. Fortunately Fontarra kept its Farmer co-operative ownership model and grafted on a marketing arm. Works well. Still NZ Dairy farmers are still out produced by some US based Wisconsin farms.

    The other secret was:-
Long term supply contracts based on an annual dry milk powder universal price/ Kg. Takes the risk out of forward planning for both the producers and the customers.

Value add at economic and vertically integrated centralised production and marketing facilities where unit capital costs were minimised.

Government deregulation and freeing up capital for reinvestment and further marketing.

Staying ‘lucky’ by having grass fed outside herds in a climate that doesn’t have extremes of temperature

    Right on Eagles.

All of the ‘marginal’ milk producers went broke or switched to venison and sheep / beef production. Alternatively some totally switched to horticulture or sold their cars, purchased huge stands of Manuka scrub land and allowed a trillion bees to their work for them producing ‘brown gold’ Manuka honey

    None went broke

My business partner and I were buying honey in Rotorua 18 months ago. There was a pallet of honey. $X 50 gallon drums of medical grade Manuka Honey worth $1.2 million in total. It was used for medical dressings for open heart surgeries to ensure that no infection could possibly get a hold.

Cunning way to diversify when milking cows loses its appeal
