Memorial Day 2020, Lockdown Edition, Day 72

Memorial Day is a day to thank the dead. Veteran;s Day is a day to thank the living.

In Flanders Fields, John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Today, I thank the living and those who are gone. So! Thank you to all those who have served! 🙂

Had an aunt and uncle who lived in Altus, OK, home to the then MAC (Military Airlift Command). When we would visit, you could watch the C-5’s doing touch and go’s from the airstrip. Yeah, really impressive. One year there was an airshow and we got to walk through a C5. The fact they can get off the ground, let alone fly, is amazing.

    @ AZfederalist:

I’ve flown on them several times. A unique experience, to say the least.

There’s a big square hole in the floor on the upper deck that goes down to the cargo deck, which isn’t heated. You get mist coming up from below.

    @ coldwarrior:

I’d be cautious about this. This looks like some of it was put together using facial recognition software, there is no supporting documentation at all.

I did see someone post something about one of Sullivan’s sons – don’t know which one – that indicated he might be a bad seed – but once again, no documentation anywhere and I looked for days.

I realize absence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence but I hope TGP has a lawyer on retainer. Judge Sullivan is a public person, his kids are not. And I have no clue on TGP’s source. Mr. Apelbaum’s site notes zero sources for the collage but other posts on there are heavily sourced with links. Those are impressive, this one sticks out because it’s way below what appear to be his usual standards.

The story about Comey falls under one of two headings: 1) So what? Sullivan put together some people he knows as a favor. Did he get any $$$ out of it? or 2) it’s false because people like Comey have agents/publishers that get them speaking gigs to flog books, etc. He wouldn’t have needed Sullivan to get him the gig.

Does it mean he should have recused himself from the Flynn case? Maybe. In Washington, so many people are friends with so many people – I mean look at the lawyer Sullivan retained. She rep’d Kavanugh for god’s sake. And she’s married to David Gregory. This place is a mares nest of interconnections, I don’t know of anybody that didn’t just arrived from Mars that wouldn’t have SOME uncomfortable associations.

As for Sharon Pratt – I remember her, it was eons ago and she’s remembered as a fairly good mayor in that she wasn’t corrupt. The major bruhaha about her term is that the municipal offices were falling down around everybody heads and she wanted to move while renovations took place and the Council didn’t, blah blah blah. That fireplace thing is in the context of trying to get the bldg renovated. And it’s perfectly logical that she and Sullivan would be friendly, her father was a jurist on the D.C. Circuit bench.

It’s a beautiful day here in NE Ohio. We’re going to head in to Chagrin Falls (home of Tim Conway) in about an hour to check things out. Hubby & I met Tim Conway a number of years ago when he came through to support a fundraiser for the Little Theater in Chagrin. Nice guy! RIP!

Beautiful here, too. Did some weed-whacking, planted some pretty flowers, and now we’re waiting for the crockpot to beep and deliver the roast. I’m also whipping up some roastie-taters in the oven.

To all the soldiers who gave all, a virtual toast. We owe you everything.

That doctor who was just on with Ed Henry said he’s seen an 8 yr old die of covid.

No, he has not. There was an 8 yr old girl in Texas that was at first thought to have contracted it but post-mortem tests were negative.

There are 2 5yr olds in NY who have died from Kawasaki who tested positive for antibodies, that’s it.

So that doctor, whose name I didn’t catch, is a liar.

I took a tour of one of those beasts at Selfridge AFB, back in the ’80’s. So massive! They demonstrated the loading of our biggest tank at the time, some Abrams behemoth. I think they could only carry one at a time, but still…imagine the weight. Or google it, in these impatient, less-imaginative times.

We also had simulated bombing and strafing runs that day, with F-16’s and some other, older fighter-bombers. There was a sonic boom, but just one, with the sissified advice to cover our ears beforehand. I’ll never forget the speed of that thing, from the time it was announced by the field-microphone guy, to the blur that went blasting past a second after it came into view. Imagine, if you will, a modern drone or bomb coming through the same airspace at 3 or more times the speed of sound. No, we don’t want that coming our way.

    @ Octopus:

A C-5 can carry about 140 tons of cargo, but it can only carry one Abrams tank, which is about half that weight. It’s because all that weight is concentrated in one spot.

It can carry 5 Bradleys, or 6 Apache helicopters. Or a shitload of standard cargo pallets.

Yes, but what vengeance? Civil war? Widespread violence, political party on rival political party? Assassination of political figures?

Careful what you wish for. Of course there are serious problems, but how often have civil insurrections, neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother, been good solutions to the problems?

My daughter’s fiance is from Derry, Northern Ireland. The British call it Londonderry. They’ve been killing each other, the Catholics and Protestants, since long before us guys have been on the planet, and I suspect it will go on after we’re dead. And these are all “Christians,” from the same ethnic bloodline. Let’s not get talking about the Muslim-Christian wars, the Hindu-Muslim wars, or any of a dozen other long-standing ethnic/religious blood-feuds.

Our political arguments are nasty, but they need not turn to bloodshed. Once you open that trapdoor to Hell, it’s almost impossible to put the shackle back on.

That’s what I thought they said. A big tank is a big-ass chunk of metal.

Another memory of that day hit me, after I posted. A small group of us civilians were talking to the pilot of the F-16 before the show, as we took turns climbing the ladder to peer into the cockpit – no pics, of course. Some a-hole took this opportunity to ask the pilot, as matter-of-factly as you please, “So, this $20 million dollar piece of metal is designed purely to kill folks?”

The pilot must have heard this one before, because he laughed a short chuckle I can hear and see to this day, and said, “Yes, that’s right. The idea is to kill them before they kill you.” He got a round of applause from the rest of the group.

The last five episodes of Season 3, Breaking Bad, went by in a blur this evening. Riveting television, in the bingeing, HD format. To think we used to have to wait whole weeks between episodes…my God, what savage primitivism!

I remember this being a time of having to re-evaluate Walt’s whole persona, and think about what was going on with the other characters for days in-between episodes. It’s a whole different experience this way, even allowing for the vague-ish memories I have of viewing the original series. It’s tiring the Old Ball-and-Chain out, keeping up emotionally. She refuses to indulge in the meth, to stay alert and upright, so we can watch the whole series in one sitting. Such a wimp!
