and the answer is they have no clue

Why do children react differently to COVID-19?
The answer isn’t clear yet. Some experts suggest that children might not be as severely affected by COVID-19 because there are other coronaviruses that spread in the community and cause diseases such as the common cold. Since children often get colds, they might have antibodies that provide them with some protection against COVID-19. It’s also possible that children’s immune systems interact with the virus differently than do adults’ immune systems. Some adults are getting sick because their immune systems seem to overreact to the virus, causing more damage to their bodies. This may be less likely to happen in children.

Read that 5 times and tell me what you come up with. Nobody knows.

What I found interesting from reading this is that the implicit focus is on antibodies. NOT on T cells. I’m not a med person, the reason for that may be so obvious to someone in the field there is no point in stating it. It’s just something that I noticed.

it sounds to me like they are describing a properly working, and properly challenged immune system in kids, and a bored, unused immune system n adults.

there is a point when you are too clean. the immune system needs to be challenged or ya end up with over-reactions and ridiculous allergies.

My first reaction is that IF related to Epstein (and since her husband was a defense attorney, there may be an answer to be found there) it was not to intimidate – it was to get her emotionally wrecked so that her NEWER cases would be reassigned (cases closer to trial would be staying with her, you don’t want a new judge coming in and having to be brought up to speed; the Epstein case hasn’t really progressed past the issuing of the summons stage as far as I can see – it can be given to another judge without skipping a beat).

    Wow…
Rush is reporting that from the information he’s getting, he’s up to 60 million listeners, three times his customary number. And I do notice that he has not been getting the usual libturd seminar callers he used to. Which means, to me, they are tuning in to listen.

I have also noticed a significant increase in the number of “minority” callers to all conservative shows expressing disgust with the Democrat Party, their friends in BLM and Antifa (and it doesn’t sound as though they’re reading from a script).

Interesting. If I were Pedo Joe, I’d start to worry.

I haven’t heard a thing about FEDERAL workers being laid off during this “shut down”. Or that Congressional staffs have been reduced. I seem to recall whenever there’s a government “shutdown” Democrats go batshit crazy telling us how awful it is for the “nonessential workers.”

Maybe if the Executive*, Judiciary and Legislative branches were told they were to designate, say, 15% of their staffs – and this is furloughed – no back pay when it all reopens – on a federal/state/local level, they’d end this shutdown within the month.

*I imagine Trump would have NO problem reducing the D.C. executive/agency payrolls by 15%.

Looks like the Judge Salas shooting was totally unrelated to Epstein and related more to a complete effing NUTJOB (who has saved the taxpayers the cost of trying his ass and killed himself):

“Roy Den Hollander was a self-described “anti-feminist” lawyer who flooded the courts with seemingly frivolous lawsuits that sought to eliminate women’s studies programs and prohibit nightclubs from holding “ladies’ nights.”

In one of his most recent cases, he openly seethed against a federal judge in New Jersey, Esther Salas, whom he described in a self-published, 1,700-page book as “a lazy and incompetent Latina judge appointed by Obama.”

Mr. Den Hollander left the case, in which he challenged the male-only United States military draft, last summer, telling a lawyer who replaced him that he had terminal cancer. SNIP

On Sunday afternoon, Mr. Den Hollander showed up at Judge Salas’s home in North Brunswick, N.J., and fired multiple gunshots, killing the judge’s son and seriously wounding her husband, who is a criminal defense lawyer, investigators said. The judge, who was in the basement at the time, was not injured.

The New York State Police found Mr. Den Hollander’s body near Liberty, N.Y. — about a two-hour drive from the judge’s home — after he shot himself in an apparent suicide, officials said.”

Now, of course, TRUMP! will be blamed. Or Rush Limbaugh (“Feminazis”).

As of today if you’re still using Google, searching for many right-leaning blogs will yield no search results including Ace’s.

This is a question for CW the Economist in Residence.

We have all been hearing for years of the demise of the NYT because of…SMERFS!??

What does it take to take down the NYT?

This is really a question of how culture intersects with economics, but the demise of the NYT would be a HUGE victory

of your money with these “Bulld Back Better” programs. If he ever get’s to do things that he is promising it will
be the death of the middle class. He of course took no questions.
As I listened I remembered two things, the exploitation of his first wife claiming that she was killed by a drunk driver.
That was a flat out lie. Then recently he complained about how tough it was to scratch by as a single parent raising two sons in 1972 on $42,000 per year. In today’s 2020 dollars that converts to $269,000 per year .

In terms of ‘stuff’, hell, we can’t get rid of it fast enough. But healthcare and taxes and Social Security…….and dogs are expensive but if anybody tells us to lose Willow and Mia they can lose their kids first. This is an interesting article on reverse discrimination lawsuits. The problem is – who has the resources? Be they time, money, emotional reserves, whatever.

HR departments should tread very carefully when selecting training in the current environment. If management pushes training that assigns collective guilt to any race, religion, sex, or ethnicity, it may constitute direct evidence of discriminatory intent in a later lawsuit claiming discrimination.

Training based on the book White Fragility, if sponsored by decision-makers as a mandatory expression of corporate culture, will likely be heavily relied upon by future plaintiffs who suspect they were denied promotions, bonuses, and other opportunities due to their skin color

    https://thefederalist.com/2020/07/20/teaching-robin-diangelos-white-fragility-will-get-you-sued/

Looking back on my corporate life: The best team I ever built had 7 people. Only 3 of us were white and one of those was a Ukranian Jew. The smartest person I’ve ever known was on that team, Victor. Nigerian. Educated in Israel.

I’ve been out of it for a long time, I know. But I find it hard to understand that there is somehow a block for people with talent that are denied because of their ethnicity. China/Taiwan have some superb people coming out as does India (caveats on both but…).

In the last few months a lot of people have lauded Tucker greatly and also he has been attacked by Character Assassination more often. I don’t watch FOX anymore just see the clips online.

In my job I saw racism and sexism by managers. It wasn’t as prevalent as the media suggests but it was serious. A leader needs to get ahead of both issues by being… a leader. Build confidence. Be an example. Step in an correct. Step back. If no learning occurs. Demotion, Transfers, Firings.

I’m not sure why. The female version of the ‘knife your way to the top ‘ corporate type is a well known character (less) type but the female version was so much more subtle and vicious. Oestrogen plus extreme type A personality sociopathy makes for one nasty mix.

I have had several to deal with in the military. Their unit morale was always in the toilet across both male and female intel operatives. Then you get the good ones who are a credit to their sex and their

Married, 2 kids, and faithful to his marriage. Believe it or not. The ladies didn’t make it easy. I had to rig his phone so that only pre-approved numbers got thru, then that didn’t work, so I just unplugged him. Then they started calling ME – “um, do you know how I can talk to [name]? I REALLY need to…”

“No you don’t really need anything he’s busy, there’s email, and if I get another call from you, it’s going straight to HR.”

And most of these women were married.

He was not a saint. He loved to be flirted with, he was a normal human being. But when the phone calls started landing on my desk, I had to rein him in. “Hey, Brando, your wife signed up for this, I’ll bust your ass down 2 pay grades. Fix it.”

The games played in the military by certain types of females were horrible. Sexual favors for performance ratings or on the flipside, false sexual harrassment charges for poor ratings that were given. Unfortunately, it was during the Clinton admin so the charge was enough to destroy a good supervisors career and reputation. Not a good time to be in.

I’ll have to get the numbers tomorrow, I left my scratch pad at work. High level summary — statistics I found were 3.3 million positive cases over the past 6 months — Now, there is uncertainty in that number because we know the numbers are fudged, but going with that gives an infection rate of 1% for a country or 330 million people. I used a 70% sensitivity for positive results, I’ll get the number I used for specificity tomorrow and let you know; had a lot going on today and I don’t remember what the number was. Applying the numbers gave very low confidence value for P(Have the Virus | Positive Result). The one really disconcerting thing I found while looking for the statistics is that the tests really only start reaching good sensitivities if the person being tested has had the symptoms for about 10 days. That doesn’t seem like a very useful clinical tool.

Looked down to the beach and the stream exit and there were two mussel floats. A big one about 1 .5 metres by 0.75 metre and a smaller one 1 metre by 0.5 metres. By the time I reached the beach 60 seconds two guys had pulled up eyeing the bounty. Finders keepers. One offered to help move the little one but it was full of water and sand and weighed about 300Kg. The bigger one was wedged on the rocks with razor sharp oyster shells. Wind chill plus rough sea… Hmmmm I’ll go down when the wind drops and if they’re still there will drag them ashore with my tow bar otherwise someone else can have ’em!

Those trials, which were performed in the late 1980s and 1990s, incorporated HIV-positive foster kids from several different states and were funded by NIH. Several of the studies were sponsored by NIAID, a sub-institute of the NIH which Fauci began directing in 1984 and was directing at the time of the studies.

Investigations found the children were very often denied a personal health advocate during the course of their trials, something medical ethicists consider necessary when trial participants are drawn from vulnerable populations such as that of foster children. Government researchers contended that the types of medicine they were using in the trials did not meet the threshold necessary to require child advocates.

And yeah, some of those kids died.

    This is a lie

After numerous reports and lawsuits in Portland regarding un-badged and un-uniformed federal officers arresting, beating, and detaining people in unmarked vehicles, the Trump administration’s response is that they’re going to do it even more, and in more cities.

They are in uniforms w/badges, this is garbage.

And reposted and reposted and reposted the tweet like it wouldn’t go away. Well no big loss. I feel less anger now that I left twitter. lol. Twitter was easiest to use when I only had a phone.

The suggestion made was something like. Add a checkbox to the IRS return that lets any citizen declare themselves as a victim and also if they want federal assistance.

I believe that was to counter the wishes of the mayors of these cities. IF the IRS collects negative information on the progressive mayors?

So, CW, per my comments last night, this is what I was computing. It is nowhere near the complexity of including confounding factors or multivariate analysis. This was just a simple Baye’s analysis.

    P(Have Virus | Positive Test) = (P(Positive Test | Have Virus) * P(Virus)) / P(Positive Test)

From what I could find on the web regarding the tests:
    P Correct | Have Virus = 0.7
P wrong | Don’t have it = 0.02 — This is a biggie, I don’t know if the sources I found are correct on this or not

Assuming worst case, in the last 6 months 3.3 Million cases in the US have been diagnosed. We will assume these were properly diagnosed. US population = 330 Million, thus
    P(Virus) = 3.3/330 = 0.01

    So, the denominator:
    P(Positive) = P(Positive | Have Virus) * P(Virus) + P(Positive | Don’t Have Virus) * P(Don’t Have)
    = 0.7 * 0.01 + 0.02 * 0.98 = 0.0268
Note: if the 0.02 number is wrong, this makes the denominator larger and the result smaller

    So, plugging in the numbers:

    P(Have Virus | Positive Test) = 0.7 * 0.01 / 0.0268 = 26%

So, given a positive test, the probability you have the virus is still only 26%. That doesn’t seem very credible. What am I doing wrong? The driver is really at 0.7 probability of correct test. If the effective percent is higher, that makes the denominator larger and the probability goes down.

I don’t believe the positive numbers. I think they are politically/administratively/incompetently fudged. The fudge factor.

    As are the death stats.

The data entry needs to be rigorously checked against a federal and worldwide standard. I have never seen the data record used to database a case. I doubt if it is consistent.

No one really knew what they were doing or how to measure it. A lesson for the next pandemic
