He will definitely be missed. His core was freedom and the opportunity that was America. May he rest in peace. Condolences to his family

The true project of the Establishment right now, and especially of the Grift Right, is to subvert the morale and self-belief of right-wing people such that, in the future, they will once again quietly accept whatever forever war, whatever exploitative “free trade” policy Establishment donors dream up. The Never Trump GOP’s infidelity is not a matter of momentary indiscretion. Their inflated sense of superiority, self-absorption, arrogance, entitlement, and oblivious self-regard points instead to the fact that they are akin to narcissistic abusers.

December 24, 1968 Apollo 8 entered lunar orbit. I was ten years old. I did not live in the USA then but I knew there was a place called Houston.

America was the place to be. All children of my age wanted to be astronauts and be Americans.

Fast forward to April 1998 and I left my home country to come to America and start a new life. Not as an astronaut but to be part of the American dream.

2021 Houston has been struggling with electricity shortages for the last five days. At one point over three million people were without electricity / heat out of a population of 4.3 million.

Without electricity there is no water supply in Houston. We now have electricity but the water distribution network is severely damaged due to burst pipes and damaged pumping equipment.

Looking out of my window I see a constant stream of people carrying buckets along the street. They are people carrying buckets of water taken from the swimming pool in a nearby apartment complex so they can flush toilets.

    We have no water.

This is not the Houston I dreamed to be living in when I was a child.

Even at Mission Control in Houston they probably have back up generators and fancy things but currently while they are celebrating landing in Mars if anyone there takes a shit they cant flush it.

    @ coldwarrior:

There’s nothing a narcissist fears more than being abandoned, and they will likely continue to lash out as the pretty lies about their moral superiority crumble.

here’s a piece that adds another dimension. The envy of the mediocre.

The grudge that mediocrity bears against genius is the purest form of evil. Thomas Mann’s postwar reworking of the Faust legend tells of the failed composer Adrian Leverkuhn who, in the final phase of syphilitic dementia, has written a cacaphonous cantata “to take back Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.” Leverkuhn had made a deal with the Devil and suffers the consequences. If the Devil has any taste in music, he won’t be in the market for Ewell’s soul.

Apparently Shrillary and Bill have a podcast. Earlier today I heard an advertisement for it in which Slick Willy, The Slick Meister himself was hawking it. I figured it was just his show, solo, like Rush. Just a minute ago though I heard basically the same commercial except this time it was Shrillarys voice pushing the program. I quickly muted it though and now wish I had listened so as to get the complete picture. Of course I COULD google it I guess…. Nah. I think it’s going to be the two of them. Willy has that hucksters charm still, he didn’t sound as weak and frail as the last time I heard him speak. He could probably pull it off – I have no doubt that lib woman still find him irresistible, yes even at this age, as sick and twisted as it might be.
OK, moving on. I am NO fan of Willy but I just had a thought. Could Shrillary be Willies Yoko Ono ? Did she demand to be part of the show so as to keep an eye on hubby and his infamous wandering eye ? Eh, he has to be too old for this, right ? Hes rehabilitated his voice though. On the ‘radio’ he sounds like the younger skirt chaser himself. This could be a scream.
Will she sink this effort before it even gets a chance ? Could they be this centuries answer to Burns/Allen, Ralph/Alice, Ricky/Lucey ? It could be a scream ! Just the thought though makes me shudder. It could be our worst nightmare.
You know they’ve had this planned for some time now, kept under wraps, just waiting for Rush to depart. They wouldn’t have stood a chance up against Rush but now that hes gone … It just occurred to me, this is proof positive that I’m living in a simulation, one created with a sense of humor, one as twisted as my own. Hmmm…now that there is a thought ?
    I can hear it now:
“Want to see me fry 4_Sticks ASS ?”
“Sure, what do ya have in mind ?’
‘Well you know how he was such a fan of Limbaugh, right ?’
“Yeah, ok, go on …. what are you up to you crazy devil ?’
    ‘Watch this …”

Why not ? The Marines are rewriting policy/procedure for transgenders as we speak …. I mean, what the hell isn’t possible ?

I just had a horror of a thought. It seems that nothing is new these days. Just about everything in entertainment is just a re working of what was created in the last century. Imagine if they (Clintons) really DO catch on, become media darlings (to half the country for now) but with slight variations ? Gomer Pyle is trans, Barney is married to Floyd the barber and so on…
‘Wake up Sticks, c’mon, you’re having nightmares again …’
    WTF.

No. We used to have a bar fly acquaintance who was part of their ‘circle’ at Yale and by ‘circle’ I don’t mean ‘friends’. Imagine intersecting Venn diagram circles.

According to him, they were frauds from the get-go. We didn’t believe him at the time but according to him it was a straight up political power match from the beginning. A lot of people got sucked into the dream. He also kept insisting on something I didn’t hear again for years – that her personal hygiene left a lot to be desired.

    @ eaglesoars:

Funny, I was just watching a bunch these this past weekend but I did not see this one ! Good Lord, the sounds alone are terrifying, DAMN !
One that I watched over the weekend showed a guy walking through one of the ships ‘hallways’ (?) maybe 75′ long I think, and you could watch the ship bend as he walked toward the camera. Another showed how a ship, once a certain amount of it left the water and was just suspended out in space while the rest of the ship passed through the wave, can actually cause the ship to break in two like the Titanic did. I dunno what would be worse, being sucked out of a passenger jet or to find ones self suddenly looking forward out at the ocean, realizing your ship had slit in two. And people have actually experienced this stuff !
My Dad, Navy vet, WWII, fibbed about his age and joined the Navy at 17 years of age (apparently my Grandmother took part in the fibb also). He was on cruiser in the So Pacific for most of his time in the Navy. He went from a small apartment and high school in the Bronx to war at sea in no time.
I can’t even imagine… Anyhow, he told me (I was just a boy at the time) that his ship took part in a rescue after another ship was, well, I don’t remember now exactly but suffice to say, the other ship went down or was about to. He had to have some of these terrifying moments in the time he was out there. Imagine experiencing something like this when all you knew and were accustomed to was your single bed in an apartment in the Bronx ?
Knowing Japanese dive bombers could appear out of nowhere, at 17, had to be enough to push a kid to the breaking point not to mention sailing through something that looked like any of these, damn !!
The only part of these talks that I remember is the comments he made about how he would NEVER go out to sea again and that he hated officers. He was a part of an ack-ack gun crew so he was on deck a lot. I also watched a video tour of one of the big guns turret from topside down. I can’t even imagine… If you’ve never seen it (video) its worth a watch. Kinda off topic yes, but combine the reality of being below deck working these guns while passing through seas like whats shown in these videos (above):

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0D-ulUrMIo

Now I know what Homer (Harold Russell) Parrish was talking about in the WWII classic “The Best Years of our Lives’ (1946). Just a movie yes, but Russel was the real deal,

    @ Bunk X:

I thought there for a second in eagles link / video that the one boat scene was from that movie, no ? The one where it went ass over teacup ?
I wanted to post the link to one of those vids I was watching over the weekend but I just couldn’t keep my eyes open anymore. I have to look for it in my History, it too had some interesting scenes.
As to the movie The Perfect Storm, that whole bit about the overweight babe
(waitress or bartender maybe?) who loses her guy at sea was just too much for me.
I didn’t realize ‘Perfect…’ was based on a novel. Did it include this same ‘lost her man at sea’ bs ? Theres an older ‘lost her man at sea’ b/w movie called ‘The Key’ (1958) in which the sailors (Holden and Howard) do temporary hook ups with a babe (Sophia Loren) due to their inevitability of being, well… ‘lost at sea’. They pass on her room key, sailor to sailor, to long suffering Loren, the whore with a heart of gold. Its not just a manipulation, its the plot of the entire movie. The trope is handled much better though in the older movie.
Some of the special effects though in Perfect Storm, IIRC, were pretty good,
    I’ll give it that.

Biden Signs Executive Order Ending Trump Industry Apprenticeship Program

But left-wing groups, and some congressional Democrats, objected to Trump’s order. The Center for American Progress complained that Trump was creating “a parallel track that lacks adequate worker protections” that could allow for “the proliferation of low-quality programs.”

Democrats eventually frustrated Trump’s new system, as Bloomberg News noted this week: “Democrats in Congress blocked funding and the implementing regulations weren’t finalized until last year.”

I, for one, will never forget that night and what those 4 mop tops did for moral around the world, silly as it may sound.

I’m usually prepared for cold weather even if I am in the south. A pair of long johns in the trunk, warm cap and gloves, water, matches, newspapers to burn.

In the old house we always had heavy quilts. Seldom needed the coal stove on at night. Hay around the outside foundation. Water dripping. windows all wrapped in plastic. @ eaglesoars:
That type of cloud looks nasty, but I don’t think it’s associated with bad weather.

I was trying to find a song that was in Rush’s bumper rotation, thought it might be Fishbone. Found this comment:

My claim to fame is that once Fishbone got me fired from Guitar Center in Chicago. I worked in the pro audio department. This guy came in saying he needed a bunch of microphones ’cause the group he did sound for kept smashing them. I asked what group it was and he said Fishbone and that they were in the store. I freaked ’cause I was a huge fan. We had a board up above the register signed by lots of big stars and I asked the manager if we could get it down and have them sign it. He asked if they had an album, I said yes (they just had the EP at the time). So, he said ok. I got it down and asked if they wanted to sign it. They were all super red-eyed and not caring much about my board. A couple of white roadies with fluorescent mohawks grabbed the marker and drew fishbones and penises all over the signatures of B.B. King, Eric Clapton and Elton John. I got fired next day. The story was worth that shitty job.

I gather this has to do with inherited property so pay attention (Biden taxes)

    Freepers.

Met with my CPA over the innerwebs today. A conservative, 30+ years in the biz.

So they tell me what Team Biden is thinking of doing.

Elimination of the Step Up in Basis, That is mind blowing.

How many of you are keeping running ledgers of Assets and or improvements to hard assets aka real estate etc.? We have been running under the Step Up in Basis rule for some time now.

    It gets worse.

You don’t or can’t come up with a basis? The IRS will assume Zero, that’s right, you will pay tax on the full value of the asset.

The only saving grace is the Swamp may not want it to hit their offspring, so this may go nowhere, unless they get an exemption…

    Please read the comments, informative

Anybody else watching The Guns of Navarone on TCM now ? Even though I’ve seen it a hundred times since its release in ’61, I forgot about how much of the beginning involves a VERY nasty bat being smashed around at sea and up against the rocks of the island. Ships and storms at sea has been a bit of theme for me since eagles post the other day.

This is a 12 min video of ships in storms (you wonder why I’m terrified of open water?). Check out the fishing boat at about the 6:30 mark. I have no idea who was filming that or from where, the camera is very steady

The 4:50 clip was an inter-Islander (Wellington on the NI to Picton at the top of the SI) Tis was shot from Lyall Bay in a VERY upperty North Westerly gale. The threshold to Runway 34 is just out of shot on the left. We used to regularly land into these Norwesters in Boeing 737-300s but also in Fokker Friendships (40 pax and two underpowered Dart turboprops. NOT a good look in weather like this.

Just in front of Lyall Bay is the entrance to Wellington Harbour. This is the very spot that the Inter-Islander Wahine lost power and was rolled and washed onto the rocks. It was full of cars trucks and a train and hundreds of passengers. About 80 died that day.

The Strait between North and South Islands is one of the most dangerous crossings in the world. OK getting out of the harbour because there is no bar but once into the open strait you get quartering swells they both roll and pitch ships at the same time. EVERYONE turns green!

The fishing boat was filmed from the shore as it was attempting to cross the bar into a sheltered anchorage.

Anyone who tries to cross bars in poor weather is nuts.

Actually anyone who is at sea in these conditions is totally nuts.

What is a ‘bar’? Is that a configuration of the land under the water that affects how the water behaves? I’ve only heard of ‘sand bars’ and I kind of understand what they are.

Ok, look at this. I can make a very good guess why this program was terminated.

This is why that Ronna person who heads up the RNC sucks canal water. This is Scott Pressler (let me know if I have to explain who he is)

Today, over 150 volunteers gathered in Illinois’ 16th District to learn how to unseat Adam Kinzinger.

Many of the voters told me that they helped elect Kinzinger in previous elections, but are no longer supporting him.

    When night stirred at sea,
An the fire brought a crowd in
    They say that her beauty
    Was music in mouth
    And few in the candlelight
    Thought her too proud,
For the house of the planter
    Is known by the trees.

    Men that had seen her
    Drank deep and were silent,
    The women were speaking
    Wherever she went —
As a bell that is rung
    Or a wonder told shyly
And O she was the Sunday
    In every week.

For a couple days on a blog I won’t name, a single man has been – what? – whining? – yelling? moaning? pleading? – I don’t know the right word – about a woman he just met who actually knows how to cook. Aaannd – he can feel the hook. So, I’m just going to post a few for the comedy gold

So the Devil Temptress this morning tells me she wants me to meet her parents and I told her that we should take things slowly and just enjoy what we have. She pulled cinnamon rolls from the oven, and now we are going to her parents tomorrow for dinner. Since we started seeing each other I put on 10 pounds
    .
    .
I know its a trap but how do you turn down fresh homemade cinnamon rolls. If she ever learns i love Orange Rolls i’m going to end up buying her a house.

    nite
