Jury was sent out to begin deliberations in the George Floyd murder case after closing arguments. In subsequent discussions with the Judge, defense called out the prosecution for calling the arguments by the defense as “stories” and made-up facts. Defense continued, stated that since the jury had not been sequestered over the weekend, it was likely they heard “a certain Senator” calling for civil disturbance if Chauvin was not convicted of murder. Since the jury may have been tainted, defense is asking for a mistrial.

He blasted Waters and said he understands that she may have given the defense ammo to overturn “this whole trial”. But he didn’t sequester the jurors, he didn’t grant another venue, IMO he is putting the jurors in serious danger. I’m not impressed with this whole narrative of “the judge blasted Waters”.

BFD. If I were a judge, I’d be incandescent that some trash politician tried to interfere with ‘my’ trial and I’d go out of my way to teach some “Fuck with me and find out” lessons.

CNN senior legal analyst panned for questioning Chauvin defense strategy in closing argument: ‘YOU HACK’

Laura Coates worked as a federal prosecutor in the Bush, Obama administrations

A CNN senior legal analyst raised eyebrows Monday with her assessment of closing arguments by the defense team for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

Defense attorney, Eric Nelson began his summation by defining “beyond a reasonable doubt,” the legal standard of proof for conviction in a criminal trial.

CNN’s Laura Coates, a former federal prosecutor, seemed unfamiliar with the concept, suggesting on Twitter that Nelson asked the jury to focus on whether there is reasonable doubt of his client’s guilt because he is unable to prove Chauvin’s innocence.

Critics from across the political spectrum were quick to pile on.

“Oh my god,” Glenn Greenwald reacted to Coates’ tweet.

“Oh my lord. This is CNN’s “senior legal analyst,” The Daily Wire’s Matt Walsh responded. “@thelauracoates You understand that the entire premise of our legal system is that the defense is not tasked with proving innocence? I mean that’s the most fundamental point to understand. And your job is to understand it. Yet here you are. Wow.”

“@thelauracoates What an utter embarrassment you are. You are not a ‘legal analyst.’ Any lawyer – even the bad ones – know the burden is on the government to prove guilt, and the defendant has no burden to prove innocence. YOU HACK,” an attorney who goes by the Twitter handle @beyondreasdoubt responded.

The judge called out Maxine Waters by name during the post-brief, said what she did was “abhorrent,” that she has no legal authority to violate the separations of powers, and more. Then he reminded defense (and me) that on Friday afternoon he specifically directed jurors not to watch the news media, and that he believes the jurors have the integrity go follow his directive. No mistrial.

Chauvin jury has a verdict. We’ll hear it between 4:30 and 5 pm

    riots will commence at 5:15

  36. 36 | April 20, 2021 4:13 pm

    @ eaglesoars:
So it’s not a hung jury.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Prosecutors fought hard to add a third-degree murder charge against former police Officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd, but a conviction on that charge alone could set up a problematic scenario for them.

That’s because another fired Minneapolis officer found guilty of third-degree murder has a pending appeal before the state Supreme Court — and if his conviction is overturned, it could mean a Chauvin conviction would fall, too.

Chauvin is charged with second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The white former officer pinned the Black man to the pavement last May for up to 9 minutes, 29 seconds. The jury can convict Chauvin of some, none or all three of the charges.

The risk is that if the jury acquits him of second-degree murder but agrees he is guilty of third-degree murder, a murder conviction might not ultimately stick.

I’ve no doubt that the Ukes will be absolutely smashed by the Russians.
However, Putin had better start writing to the mothers of the Russian tankies in the 210 tanks that will be snotted by Javelins that were delivered in 2018.
I notice Putin isn’t sending in the new T14’s….can’t have the world seeing Javelins making mincemeat of their future export tank which is touting “active protection” now, can we?

    @ Aussie Infidel:

Had an email exchange with a Russian reserve officer (LTC) a part of the air defense regiment discussing the T14 about 8 years ago.

We both agreed what was being marketed and what the russian armor divisions will actually get are 2 different things. Corners will be cut and budgets reduced to simply get the tank into the field.

Your opinion: Would Putin think it a good idea to threaten NATO interests right about now? The U.S. hasn’t been this weakly governed since who knows when. Then China could start coming in…They could double team us?

    @ Buckeye Abroad:

The Russians have gotten really good at making stuff for airshows and parades. Clickbait, basically.

But hey…that one Su-57 they have is pretty impressive.

Oh, no, not again. What is it with China and their effing dams.

China’s plans for Himalayan super dam stoke fears in India

China is planning a mega dam in Tibet able to produce triple the electricity generated by the Three Gorges — the world’s largest power station — stoking fears among environmentalists and in neighbouring India.

The structure will span the Brahmaputra River before the waterway leaves the Himalayas and flows into India, straddling the world’s longest and deepest canyon at an altitude of more than 1,500 metres (4,900 feet).

The project in Tibet’s Medog County is expected to dwarf the record-breaking Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in central China, and is billed as able to produce 300 billion kilowatts of electricity each year.

It is mentioned in China’s strategic 14th Five-Year Plan, unveiled in March at an annual rubber-stamp congress of the country’s top lawmakers.

But the plan was short on details, a timeframe or budget.

The river, known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibetan, is also home to two other projects far upstream, while six others are in the pipeline or under construction.

The “super-dam” however is in a league of its own.

Last October, the Tibet local government signed a “strategic cooperation agreement” with PowerChina, a public construction company specialising in hydroelectric projects.

A month later the head of PowerChina, Yan Zhiyong, partially unveiled the project to the Communist Youth League, the youth wing of China’s ruling party.

Enthusiastic about “the world’s richest region in terms of hydroelectric resources”, Yan explained that the dam would draw its power from the huge drop of the river at this particular section.

    CNN

“We’re going to have to have, for our young people, not just testing once and you’re good to go to school, but at least weekly, if not more frequently, to make sure nobody infectious is going to school.” – LA Mayor Eric Garcetti on what steps need to be taken to reopen schools.

And I will bet my house that Garcetti et al are getting money from big pharma. Not to mention the ad revenue to CNN

    Yeah, this will work

A federal judge overseeing a sprawling lawsuit about homelessness in Los Angeles ordered the city and county on Tuesday to offer some form of shelter to the entire homeless population of skid row by October.

Judge David O. Carter granted a preliminary injunction sought by the plaintiffs in the case last week and now is telling the city and county that they must find single women and unaccompanied children on skid row a place to stay within 90 days, followed by helping families within 120 days and finally, by Oct. 18, offering every homeless person on skid row housing or shelter.

“Los Angeles has lost its parks, beaches, schools, sidewalks, and highway systems due to the inaction of city and county officials who have left our homeless citizens with no other place to turn,” Carter wrote in a 110-page brief laced with quotes from Abraham Lincoln and an extensive history of how skid row was first created.

    FWIW

“And it is so pervasive that it is I just don’t know how this jury it can really be said to be that they are free from the taint of this,” the lawyer representing Derek Chauvin said. “And now that we have U.S. representatives, threatening acts of violence in relation to the specific case, it’s mind boggling to me, judge.”

“Well, I’ll give you that Congresswoman Waters may have given you something on appeal that may result in this whole trial being overturned,” Cahill responded.

So who hears the appeal? Judge Cahill?
