Slacktivism.

I like it.

I also love some Misfts…Mr Graves tells it like it is.

My first mother’s day without my mother. Small things are popping up that remind me of her. Like yellow begonia hanging baskets that she loved for her front porch. She could see them from her favorite spot in the living room and it would bring her such joy. Will wait for the weather to improve before I buy some for the house.

Yeah, I miss my mom too. Long story, but she showed up for about 7 years after she passed. Until her first great grandchild was born (she visited not just me but my sister and both nieces)

China was heavily criticized after sending a missile to destroy a defunct weather satellite in January 2007, creating a large field of hazardous debris imperiling other satellites and spacecraft.

This is probably why the US military didn’t use the chinese booster as target practice.

Parts shortages, price spikes, port delays, labor trouble — all are complicating the economy’s rebound and threatening to ignite an inflationary spiral that could derail President Biden’s hopes for a smooth recovery.

    Conclusions:

Meta-analyses based on 18 randomized controlled treatment trials of ivermectin in COVID-19 have found large, statistically significant reductions in mortality, time to clinical recovery, and time to viral clearance. Furthermore, results from numerous controlled prophylaxis trials report significantly reduced risks of contracting COVID-19 with the regular use of ivermectin. Finally, the many examples of ivermectin distribution campaigns leading to rapid population-wide decreases in morbidity and mortality indicate that an oral agent effective in all phases of COVID-19 has been identified….

…In 1975, Professor Satoshi Omura at the Kitsato institute in Japan isolated an unusual Streptomyces bacterium from the soil near a golf course along the southeast coast of Honshu, Japan. Omura, along with William Campbell, found that the bacterial culture could cure mice infected with the roundworm Heligmosomoides polygyrus. Campbell isolated the active compounds from the bacterial culture, naming them “avermectins” and the bacterium S. avermitilis for the compounds’ ability to clear mice of worms.7 Despite decades of searching around the world, the Japanese microorganism remains the only source of avermectin ever found. Ivermectin, a derivative of avermectin, then proved revolutionary. Originally introduced as a veterinary drug, it soon made historic impacts in human health, improving the nutrition, general health, and well-being of billions of people worldwide ever since it was first used to treat onchocerciasis (river blindness) in humans in 1988. It proved ideal in many ways, given that it was highly effective, broad-spectrum, safe, well tolerated, and could be easily administered.7 Although it was used to treat a variety of internal nematode infections, it was most known as the essential mainstay of 2 global disease elimination campaigns that has nearly eliminated the world of two of its most disfiguring and devastating diseases.

    onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis

  38. coldwarrior
    38 | May 10, 2021 7:45 am

the ivermectin discussion hits one of my favorite topice, ‘neglected tropical diseases’

so, onchcerciasis is aslo known as river blindness, carried by black flies
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onchocerciasis

and lymphatic filariasis, which often turns into elephantitis, carried by mosquitos
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lymphatic_filariasis

both are caused by parasitic worms. ivermectin interferes with the muscles and nerves of the parasitic worms when taken orally; this disrupts the parasite’s life / reproductive cycle when they are in viro. it can also be used topically to treat scabies.

  39. coldwarrior
    39 | May 10, 2021 7:49 am

so, ivermectin appears to also work as a broad-specrum anti-viral in viro. it inhibits RNA protein folding of the virus during replication. how it does this is well beyond my scope of practice or understanding.

smallpox is prevented with a simple vax as it is a viral infection

The basis for vaccination began in 1796 when the English doctor Edward Jenner noticed that milkmaids who had gotten cowpox were protected from smallpox. Jenner also knew about variolation and guessed that exposure to cowpox could be used to protect against smallpox. To test his theory, Dr. Jenner took material from a cowpox sore on milkmaid Sarah Nelmes’ hand and inoculated it into the arm of James Phipps, the 9-year-old son of Jenner’s gardener. Months later, Jenner exposed Phipps several times to variola virus, but Phipps never developed smallpox. More experiments followed, and, in 1801, Jenner published his treatise “On the Origin of the Vaccine Inoculation.” In this work, he summarized his discoveries and expressed hope that “the annihilation of the smallpox, the most dreadful scourge of the human species, must be the final result of this practice.”

Dr Jenner is truly a hero among the medical profession.

Darkside sez it wasn’t them but they’re sorry anyway

In its own statement, the DarkSide group hinted that an affiliate may have been behind the attack and that it never intended to cause such upheaval. Like some other ransomware groups, DarkSide offers to sell its malware to others in what is known as “ransomware-as-a-service,” according to the cybersecurity firm Cybereason.

In a message posted on the dark web, where DarkSide maintains a site, the group suggested one of its customers was behind the attack and promised to do a better job vetting them going forward.

“We are apolitical. We do not participate in geopolitics,” the message says. “Our goal is to make money and not creating problems for society. From today, we introduce moderation and check each company that our partners want to encrypt to avoid social consequences in the future.”

Yinz really need to listen to Steve Bannon’s show, War Room. You don’t have to listen live, everything is recorded and saved on the website.

    https://warroom.org/

Mon – Fri he’s on at 10-12, and 5-6 and Sat at 10-12.

Today he interviewed an Aussie journalist, Sharri Markson, investigative journo, who has written a book “What Really Happened in Wuhan”, out in Sept (you can pre-order)

It sounds like the Five Eyes intel agencies knew more than our gov’ts were telling us regarding the origins of the virus. BUT – U.S. intel refused to share a lot of stuff w/the other agencies.

And I got the impression that a lot was suppressed because people just HATED Trump and didn’t want to provide info that proved he was right. Altho I don’t think her book addresses it, that goes for therapeutics too. A lot of people have blood on their hands.

Skilled workers are being attracted from overseas and commodity prices are going ballistic, Iron ore price hit $160 a tonne. China economy is now dependant 100% on Aussie iron ore. China’strade war on Oz is smoke and mirrors as it’s the Aussies who have the Chinese economy by the balls. Turn off the ore and coal and Chia goes dr and broke. …… The rest is just Chinese jingoism writ large.

Johnson’s UK is also about to boom. Hopefully the Kiwi economy can wean itself off the Chinese economy as the UK begins to open it’s food markets to Kiwi high value food and services.

So, do you know of the Sharri Markson person?

I was visiting my parents in Florida one summer and a mama armadillo waddled over with 2 babies. I played with them.

Which is when my sister gleefully informed me they are the only other creatures that contract Hanson’s disease, aka leprosy.

    She doesn’t like me.

Thanks Eagles. I slept in a real bed last night! Bliss.

Interestingly lepers lose sensation and villagers used to accidentally roll into the hot coals of a fire at night and not wake up sans a hand or foot next morning. It wasn’t their leprosy per se that I was flying them out of the jungle to treat. It was associated damage to their bodies. Leprosy can be managed 100% with modern drug therapies

All came about for a ‘set up’ by some ultra-nationalists literally waving flags on Jerusalem Day and marching onto Temple Mount and the al Axia Mosque. The whole thing was stage managed.

Morrison is walking a tight rope with Chine. He’s getting flogged by the Chinese on trade but can’t really say much lest they up the stakes. All this when Oz actually holds China’s balls in its hands by being able to bring down the Chinese economy if it so desires. That would mean blood war and revolution however and is Australia’s version of their nuclear option. Too dangerous to use unless it comes down to survival options., and taking China down with you.

You can imagine the Chinese economy imploding if they run out of iron ore and coal. China has reserves but that’d only stave off the inevitable total economic collapse. Oz currently has that power over China. It won’t last forever but it is a reality for at least the next 2-3 years.

Frankly I don’t believe the Chinese rhetoric on Taiwan. Economic and cyber warfare sure, Scare tactics and Taiwan’s ADIZ overflights by the PLAAF absolutely… and often. But a full on invasion… I think not for for the foreseeable future, Guam would have to be taken out to secure China’s left flank and can you see that happening with all that such an action would generate? Nah… me neither.

What is in the mix is Xi’s popularity in an environment a LOT different from the years when Mao ruled China with an iron fist. Xi’s grasp of absolute power is … well not exactly absolute. There are cracks aplenty if you have eyes to see. Frankly Xi is second rate and the 12 families that actually count in China know it. They aren’t going to burn in a nuclear fire for anyone’s ego !

Taiwan will be undermined when it is possible, especially economically but Real Politik is also in play here. China’s ICs are ALSO made in Taiwan and is China going to cut off it’s nose to spite its face? Nah !

Chana also knows how politically, geographically and demographic vulnerable it is, not to forget economically. The 12 families deal in realpolitik as they have done for hundreds of years. They know which side their bread is buttered and which the winds are blowing and it’s not China’s century no matter how much they might eat it to be.

The booming economy in Oz is being fuelled by China’s demand for very expensive Australian Iron ore. Even with China’s trade war with Australia the Aussies are winning at a canter as both they and the Chinese know that Oz holds all of the trade cards.

Sure if Oz tripled the price of iron ore in this sellers’ market and pushed its volume price monopoly power, it could tank the Chinese economy, cause a hot war, kill millions in a Chinese revolution and wound its own economy in the process. Oz would however survive perhaps a little poorer, but the CCP would not!

A Chinese invasion of Taiwan is anything but simple or guaranteed to succeed. It’s got every timing constraints both tactical and strategic and the strategic clock is ticking and not in China’s interests. Tactically twice yearly invasion window of opportunity and buildup is impossible to hide, and a massive invasion across some nasty water let alone resupply if the war goes past 4-6 weeks would be impossible to resupply.

A single short nasty storm almost wrecked the D Day resupply effort and Taiwan is a hell of a way further than a quick nip across the Channel.

    🙂

Chelsea Clinton on regulating free speech

“I personally very strongly believe there has to be more intensive and intentional and coordinated global regulation of the content on social media platforms,” she said.

“We know that the most popular video across all of Latin America for the last few weeks that now has tens of millions of views is just an anti-vax, anti-science screed that YouTube has just refused to take down.”

“We know that – because I have tried – that appealing to the leadership of these companies to do the right thing has just not worked, and so we need regulation.”

This is worth a read. Mollie Hemingway torpedoed the anti-Kavanaugh bullshit almost single-handedly. Susan Hennesee, recently rewarded for her anti-Trump stance with a senior position at DOJ and who promoted the Steele dossier and maintained that the Kavanaugh accusations had been corroborated, now is in a position to target her. Do not doubt it.

September 14, 2019 is one of the most important days in the history of journalism. It was on that day that a reporter named Mollie Hemingway traveled forward in time to torch the New York Times.

Okay, so Hemingway didn’t literally time travel. What she did was obtain an early copy of the book The Education of Brett Kavanaugh. The authors were Times reporters Kate Kelly and Robin Pogrebin. It would be published the following Tuesday, September 17. In obtaining an early copy of the book, Hemingway was able to preemptively firebomb a bogus story being sold by the book’s authors.

It was and remains an amazing journalistic feat, with major implications

Seeing Guam is a US territory and home to almost 200,000 US citizens including 9,000 Marines and about 9,000 of their family members, plus a National Guard unit that is part of 25th Div based in Honolulu about three air bases and a Naval base plus a few Marine barracks …. that is a major chunk of US citizenry in China’s crosshairs.

It will not be Biden’s call about the body bags of all those US citizens on the TV, it’s the attack on part of the USA that will refit even old Joe’s attention. If China wants Taiwan then Guam can’t be there like a thorn in Xi’s left flank.

    Really?

MIT researchers ‘infiltrated’ a Covid skeptics community a few months ago and found that skeptics place a high premium on data analysis and empiricism.

“Most fundamentally, the groups we studied believe that science is a process, and not an institution.”

Indeed, anti-maskers often reveal themselves to be more sophisticated in their understanding of how scientific knowledge is socially constructed than their ideological adversaries, who espouse naïve realism about the “objective” truth of public health data.”

“In other words, anti-maskers value unmediated access to information and privilege personal research and direct reading over “expert” interpretations.”

“Its members value individual initiative and ingenuity, trusting scientific analysis only insofar as they can replicate it themselves by accessing and manipulating the data firsthand.”

There’s a different philosophy at the agency I hired. We will have an open house the first weekend after it’s put back on the market, a stager is coming in to make it look ‘good’ for new photos, etc. The new agent said, “You bought a house and made it a home. What you have to sell is a house that someone else can see as THEIR home.” They have a database of over 12k buyers that they just run the parameters by and market to them in addition to the new people that pop up. And if we still don’t have any takers, they buy the house at the asking price.

    Good idea

U.S. moving to temporarily waive Jones Act after Colonial Pipeline attack

The Biden administration said Tuesday it is moving to temporarily waive a law that requires goods shipped between U.S. ports to be transported on U.S.-owned and operated vessels. The move over the Jones Act comes in response to the ransomware attack that led to a shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline, a critical artery supplying fuels to the East Coast. The U.S. Department of Transportation said in a statement that it has “started the work needed to enable consideration of a temporary and targeted waiver of the Jones Act,” and that it is surveying qualified vessels that can carry petroleum products within the Gulf and from the Gulf up the Eastern Seaboard. Colonial Pipeline is working to restore the system that provides 45% of the fuel consumed on the U.S. East Coast by the end of the week.

Solar, wind, batteries, nuclear, tidal power, among others, provide carbon-free electricity. But their generation is usually immediately absorbed into the power grid for use or stored in lithium-ion batteries.

Large-scale energy hoarding is expensive, and quite frankly, with base metal prices skyrocketing, maybe unattainable unless the Biden administration allocates billions of dollars to upgrade the grid.

Toronto-based Hydrostor has found a solution to storing power on the grid that doesn’t involve batteries but instead stores energy in the form of compressed air in underground chambers.

Gene Therapy Researchers Find Viral Barcode to Cross the Blood-Brain Barrier

Gene therapies promise to revolutionize the treatment of many diseases, including neurological diseases such as ALS. But the small viruses that deliver therapeutic genes can have adverse side effects at high doses. UNC School of Medicine researchers have now found a structure on these viruses that makes them better at crossing from the bloodstream into the brain – a key factor for administering gene therapies at lower doses for treating brain and spinal disorders.

It can be more complex but it doesn’t threaten public safety for the admin password to be audited. Audits happen every year. The password can be granted and then changed. If data exposure is an issue then the data can be redacted.

This sounds a lot to me like the higher ups don’t know what they are talking about and are looking for excuses.

    oh dear

‘Agitated’ Ocasio-Cortez berated and screamed at Border Patrol agent during Texas visit, government documents show

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez berated a Border Patrol agent during her 2019 visit to a border station in El Paso, Texas, according to newly obtained government documents.

“I as a woman of color do not feel safe here,” the New York Democrat told a female agent during her July 1, 2019, visit, according to government documents obtained by the Daily Signal through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Ocasio-Cortez went on “to personally admonish and berate” the agent after claiming the agent took a selfie with the congresswoman in the background.

The unnamed agent, however, denied the accusation of taking a selfie to her supervisor and in a memo that day. Her colleagues also denied seeing her take a photo, and her supervisor found no evidence of a picture on her phone.

“Rep. Ocasio-Cortez abruptly voiced an allegation that a female agent outside of the REDACTED had just taken a selfie with Rep. Ocasio-Cortez in the background,” the agent in charge said in a memo dated July 2 and sent to the acting agent in charge. “Rep. Ocasio-Cortez not only verbally voiced this concern, she became agitated and animated as she began to bang on the glass, pointing and screaming at the agent.”

The female agent “did admit to having her cell phone in her hand and showed me the current image on the screen,” the agent in charge wrote. “The image appeared to me to be web-based and had nothing to do with interior photos of the detention area.”

Ocasio-Cortez went on to accuse the agent of “unprofessional conduct and asking if she will have future contact with children,” the agent in charge wrote the next day.

More evidence that the Vatican Catholic Church is no longer Christian. Withholding communion from those who are participating in public sins or publicly promoting sin (I think last time I checked, publicly promoting the murder of babies counts as sin) is not done as a political statement, but is done out of concern for the soul of the person participating in those public and persistent sins. The bible is quite clear that if someone takes communion in an unworthy manner (such as is the case of people like Pelosi and Biden given their support of abortion, euthanasia, and other forms of deviant behavior), they are taking the sacrament to their damnation, not to their benefit. The US Catholic bishops are rightly advocating withholding the sacrament from such as these who are publicly advocating for evil.

Because the Trumpers are acting like the Left. They don’t quit. Unlike the polite, cultured Repubs who are more concerned about being GRACEFUL losers as long as they can keep the pearls they clutch.

A bridge across the Mississippi has a BIG crack.

    https://twitter.com/AndyMPederson/status/1392534362248388611

    So they’ve closed the river

Here’s where it gets very, very bad.

The Mississippi River is the mouth of the Midwest’s on-water grain export economy.

This means more exports shifting to the PNW via rail (huge congestion), or via ocean container (no equipment or ship/rail space).
    .
    .
Corn and soy exports from upriver are both bigly affected.

Cotton and cotton co-products mainly export on rail or barge from Memphis.

Those could re-route over the USEC via NS or CSX rail to Savannah, but containers are EXTREMELY tight in Memphis.

Oh, here’s a good piece on what a rotten person Liz Cheney is. She threw her sister under the bus

Running for Senate in 2013, Liz Cheney threw her sister overboard. “I love Mary very much, I love her family very much. This is just an issue on which we disagree,” she told viewers of Fox News.

“Liz — this isn’t just an issue on which we disagree, you’re just wrong — and on the wrong side of history,” Mary, a Republican operative herself, shot back on Facebook. “Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children,” Mary’s wife Heather Poe wrote. “To have her now say she doesn’t support our right to marry is offensive to say the least.”

Weld two channels on either side of the tube. Gotta calc out the member to see why it failed in the first place. I suspect it was caused by temperature fluctuation, but then I would expect to find cracks in others.

Several years ago (1990s?) there was some chinese-manufactured steel in circulation, mostly high-tension bolts, that was found to be very brittle. I don’t remember if larger steel components were affected, but there was a recall and requirements for retrofits.

ICE Nominee Worked With BLM to Push False Claim That White Man Murdered 7-Year-Old Black Girl

The Texas sheriff nominated to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement pushed a false claim that a white man murdered a seven-year-old black girl from Houston, even after receiving a tip that the actual killers were black.

Ed Gonzalez, the Harris County sheriff and the Biden administration’s choice for ICE director, worked closely with Black Lives Matter activist Shaun King to identify Jazmine Barnes’s killer. Gonzalez amplified the family’s claim that the gunman was white even after he received a tip that Barnes’s killers were black. An attorney for the man King falsely identified as the shooter said King’s allegation might have contributed to his client’s suicide.

Colonial Pipeline initiated the restart of pipeline operations today at approximately 5 p.m. ET.

Following this restart, it will take several days for the product delivery supply chain to return to normal. Some markets served by Colonial Pipeline may experience, or continue to experience, intermittent service interruptions during the start-up period. Colonial will move as much gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel as is safely possible and will continue to do so until markets return to normal.
