GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY!
Ah, yes! the 2021 Army Navy football game is upon us!
3:00 PM | CBS |
The line is 6.5 with Army as the favorite. Each team is under 100yds of passing per game. This is a run oriented game from the wing formation. I’m not betting on this because this game gets way too unpredictable. the cadets/midshipmen with the most will and heart win.
Me and the girls are up at G’ma and Papap Coldwarrior’s palatial estate up north (Mrs Coldwarrior is on night shift at home this weekend). Papap Coldwarrior is thinning out the contents of the Legendary Garagemahal. Tools and devices from almost 40 years of high level (nuclear) machinist work have been given away to the local trade school. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what most of that stuff was, it looked pretty damned technical tho. I got three things. His original tool box from when he apprenticed at Penn Machine under his father in law, Great Grandfather Pappap Coldwarrior. And I got Great Grandfather Pappap’s master-machinist tool box and micrometer!
Interestingly, Dad (Pappap Coldwarrior) was offered to go to Australia twice. First with Penn Machine in the late 60’s, then again for LWBR set up in the late 70’s early 80’s by the Aussie govt who were not ever trying to make their own nukes, ever. No, really, ever. For realz! We came within a few weeks of moving down-under, it was a great offer and was almost accepted.
I had no idea how talented Pappap Coldwarrior was until his retirement party. Machinists from other stations and even other systems (from over 1000 mile away) came to it and talked about him…’innovative…extremely talented…genius’…the CEO of the company even made a speech. And here I thought he was just a grumpy, hyper-exacting, moody, metal turner!
He isn’t getting around too well right now, industrial disease. He’s has a new R shoulder, new R hip, new L knee, one more joint to go, the R knee this January. (The steroid shots quit working). His goal, walk 9 holes of golf by May, 18 by August.
Bionic and Ironic…’The Machinist’ saved by machined joints.
Good morning! Effective Dec 17

Ok, weird week. Got a letter yesterday saying they were working on my unemployment determination. Got a letter today saying I was approved with a determination of disabled. Not sure what that means and can’t find anything on their website. Strange stuff. Plus they approved me but haven’t deposited my first deposit which I already filed for, so not sure what’s up.
Then two nights ago the VA called me and said they finally fixed the disaster with my optical payment and have paid my optical bill from last year. Called my optician, and nope they have heard nothing nor received nothing. Completely baffled.

Yup. I thought the 1960s was a bit early for a nuclear job offer at Jervis Bay. Sir Mark Olephant and Prof Baxter of Sydney University’s physics department, were mixed up with the British effort to build two Breeder Reactors on Federal land outside the Naval base and airfield. Both were deep into building the atom bombs in the US during the war. They tested around 20 atomic bombs at Woomera missile range, in South Australia, as well as several thermonuclear bombs at Christmas Island in Australia’s North.
By 1961 the twin Breeder Reactors were about half finished when the US threatened both Oz and Britain to stop the build or suffer massive economic sanctions. Same with Blue Streak delivery missiles being tested at Woomera. In the end Australia got three reactors all based just on the southern outskirts of Sydney, HiFar, Motar and a third who’s name I can’t remember. Research reactors as well as medical isotope producing reactor. I remember that Sydney University had a nuclear engineering department with a big linear accelerator and I think ANU also had one as well, but otherwise nada nukes!

The 50s and 60s were bad times for British technological progress. Very many projects were cancelled due to lack of money. Also very many were cancelled due to USA pressure.
There are thousands of documentaries on YouTube about this era of British history. Videos about how many of the scientists involved in the Manhattan project were British but after WWII ended so did the transfer of nuclear weapons research to the UK.
To finally get back into the ” nuclear club ” Britain designed and tested their own hydrogen bomb. Only then did the USA co-operate again with the UK.
While we are on the subject of the post WWII era lots of Americans laugh at British food.
This is an interesting article if anyone is bored. Rationing of food, petrol and other things finally ended in Britain in 1954. NINE years after the end of WWII.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rationing_in_the_United_Kingdom
In other words it took NINE years after the end of WWII for Britain to get back to normality. That is the extent of the effect that the Second World War had on Britain.
@ Possum Pureblood:
Anyway Britain quit trying to do anything technical any more. We just buy from China and the USA.
As an example we stopped developing military aircraft and just bought the F35 from you guys.

Anyway the F35 is really cool! It is made by Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martinis the prime F-35 contractor, with principal partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems.

Combined, but heavily concentrated at the top, the companies in the S&P 500 Index bought back a record of $234.5 billion of their own shares in Q3 2021, according to preliminary estimates by S&P Dow Jones Indices, blowing by the previous record of $223 billion in Q4 2018. And there’s more coming, according to Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Dow Jones Indices, cited by the Wall Street Journal: Buybacks in Q4 would set a new record of $236 billion, he said.
This comes on the heels of a proposed tax of 1% on share buybacks in the “Build Back Better” bill that passed the House on November 19 and is now hung up in the Senate, where the tax hasn’t generated the storm of opposition that other measures in the bill have.

Alyssa Farah. Among other things, she was Pence’s press person. But she has a pretty full CV.
Alyssa Alexandra Farah (born June 15, 1989) is an American political advisor who was White House Director of Strategic Communications and Assistant to the President in the Trump administration in 2020. Farah previously served as Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Media Affairs and the Press Secretary for the United States Department of Defense from 2019 to 2020.[1][2][3] Farah was press secretary for U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Special Assistant to President Donald Trump from October 2017 to September 2019. Farah is the first person to serve as the top spokesperson for the President, Vice President, and Secretary of Defense in one Administration.[4] She was the youngest Pentagon Press Secretary in history.[5]
Since August 2021, Farah has presented The Hill’s online news program Rising alongside Ryan Grim and Kim Iversen.
Her wiki bio says her father is Joseph Farah and I thought ‘why do I know that name?’
oh!
Her father, Joseph Farah, is a journalist of Syrian and Lebanese descent who was executive news editor at the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner before moving to Northern California to become editor of The Sacramento Union in 1990. He later founded the far-right conspiracy website WorldNetDaily. Her mother Judy (née Smagula) is a Sacramento-based journalist who has written for HuffPost, the Associated Press, and Comstock’s Magazine.[7][8][9]

CVS’ parent company is Canadian IIRC
CVS Health is partnering with Microsoft to develop a “data-driven, personalized, privacy-compliant customer experience,” which sounds a whole lot like Bill Gates getting his grubby, blood-stained hands into patients’ vaccine records.
According to reports, Microsoft Azure will help CVS “enhance its omnichannel pharmacy capabilities and deliver customized, omnichannel health recommendations,” which is likely only possible if patients’ medical histories are laid bare for Microsoft, and possibly Gates, to view and analyze.
Using advanced machine learning (ML) technology models run on Microsoft’s cloud computing service, CVS will be able to leverage the results to automate more healthcare-related tasks, the company says.
“Utilizing it as a strategic platform, CVS Health will migrate over 1,500 new and existing business applications to Azure cloud,” an announcement about the partnership explains.

In general I think conservatives will respect medical privacy and liberals will salivate at illegally getting their hands on such data. With a mea culpa to follow. Data privacy meets open records policies.
But all data is headed to the cloud and into a blockchain system. For the same tech reasons a person owns a mobile phone today. The actual data will be encrypted but the the interface to the data will translate it out for better or worse.

welp. I can’t say too much for obvious reasons. But I have it on good authority that there is a method to Mitch McConnell’s madness. It has something to do with wanting Manchin’s vote on the BBB bullshit. Don’t ask me to explain because I’m not at liberty to do so. All I can say is that I was told I shouldn’t lose faith in McConnell and that Manchin is the acquisition target. Also that Sinema is watching how this plays out.
The basic scenario is that Mitch let the debt ceiling thing slide because it wasn’t worth the fight and Manchin was willing to go along with it because ‘meh’.
I still went full rage harpy and started dropping low-altitude f-bombs.
The BBB will KILL West Virginia. Manchin has zero reason to vote for it. So I’m not convinced that’s the game.
I STILL think the play is – get rid of Kamala, move Manchin to VP. Get rid of Biden – however – move Manchin into POTUS, via a race or resignation.
I think THAT’S the game McConnell is playing. Kissie face w/ POUTUS Manchin.
Manchin has a career decision to make and it’s not about representing West Goddamn Virginia.
If I’m even close to being right, Manchin can negotiate the BBB crap – I want this part out, will keep this title, blah blah blah, and send it back to the House. That would explode heads over on that side.
(And I may emphasize that this is VERY good – as in active position on the Hill – authority.)

The main use of the two Breeder Reactors that were under construction at Jervis Bay South of Sydney was that they also produced loads of Plutonium that could be used in weapons technology … and the US objected to that scenario.
Australia had senior physicists and engineers on the Manhatten project during the war and Oz hosted almost all of the British nuclear test shots in the 1950s 1nd 1960s, atomic shots at Woomera and thermonuclear tests on Montibello Island and Christmas Island, off the NW coast of Oz.
Right now Oz has ground breaking research into Fissile material enrichment and it’s so sensitive that only the US and Oz have access to the tech.

You are thinking of the highly racist term “Indian ” in the USA. Which to the rest of the world is known as Red Indian.
That was due to a navigational mistake many hundreds of years ago when European explorers tried to find a shorter way to get to India by going West not East and unfortunately it was not possible because America ( The continent, not the USA ) was in the way. And the people that lived in this newly found continent were a strange colour. Red not brown like real Indians.

EVERYTHING produces waste mate. Nothing is 100% efficient!
At least Thorium reactors burn liquid fuel and one can isolate the waste products while the reactor continues to operate normally. I forget the efficiencies numbers of Thorium reactors but they totally outstrip conventional solid nuclear fueled reactors that sit down in the single figures in overall efficiency. The thing that differentiates Thorium reactors is that they burn LIQUID fuels which are easy to clean and recycle whilst NOT requiring the pile to shut down so that cracked fuel pellets get shifter about and removed and replaced. Thorium reactors can even burn the cast off highly radioactive fuel produced in conventional reactors.
The first advantage is that the design of a Thorium reactor CAN’T melt down. If they have an accident and the heat of the reaction climbs a solid plug melts and the whole load of fissile liquid gets dumped into a drain tank where it is held away from the reactor pile.

The initial staff had long discussions on privacy rights and the ethics of video recordings. They tilted in favor of citizen privacy. EG. For the traffic cameras they were to be used only for traffic congestion analysis. There was a law created that denied law enforcement access to any of the multiple traffic centers recording. Then a bad crime occurred on the freeway and the privacy restrictions became blurred. The second and third generations of govt employees hadn’t invested any time in understanding the existing privacy issue. They just saw an opportunity to gain more information they thought they needed. And the politicians were ok with that.

This gets religious. IMO everything can have an attraction and repulsion and move along those lines in some big cosmic big bang magnetism wave. But that isn’t self consciousness its just mother nature.
And there is a mother nature reason we don’t see any 150 year olds. Then there is that old maxim that “God Geometrizes”. There is an idea out there called Sacred Geometry. It’s implies geometry is inert until God manifests self consciousness into a complex geometrical form that can manage it. Breathe of life into dirt. I think in such a case evangelicals would be more efficient than scientists in managing the energy of creation.
And in reference to the Dalai Lama a person has to be kind to have the proper position on the earth. In terms of Christ it means evangelical love as an example. I’ve met a couple of evangelicals that really rocked me with their life effort. Most do not.

We all know what a bitch the FedEx automatic computerised system is. She does not give you a second chance if she does not understand something you say. She transfers you to a human. That is all well and good you may say. But the FedEx bitch does not give the FedEx human any information she already gathered. Not even the phone number you called from.
Now, the Blue Cross Blue Shield computer must be a close relative but at least she passes your phone number to the BCBS human.
This rant concerns the humans.
Yes I agree no one should be refused a job because of a physical disability but come on, let us be realistic here. A main job requirement for telephone customer support must be the ability to speak English well enough for a customer to be able to understand you.
Just spent 90 minutes on the phone with three different customer service humans and I couldn’t bloody understand 90% of what any of the three said.
Why don’t the employers of these telephone customer service operators check that they can actually be understood?
No, I do not think the BCBS customer service was outsourced to India as there were three reps with three quite different accents. The Hispanic one was the easiest to understand, the Indian/Pakistan one next and the Chinese/South East Asian lady was almost impossible.
Yep, I know I have a strong accent but at least I can be understood on the phone.

Got a cheap dell laptop. Blog is extremely fast now. I like it but it has a touch screen and no mouse. I’m incompetent. I couldn’t figure out how to right click anything. A sad sight. Leaning over a computer, squinting and pointing saying “ahhhh maybe just hitting this will work”.
Came with a 12 month McAffee subscription that turned into 3 months upon install. I am sure it was 12 months and I had to right click something to get it set up right.
Came over night with free shipping two days later with a $50 shipping charge tacked on. Their support was all in India and automated with a voice assistant that couldn’t understand me. Finally I just called random corporate numbers until someone answered. They’ll refund the charge once I am invoiced. Was like an hour of work for their error.

The 101 along the west coast is full of National Forests and temps that seldom go below 45 degrees. Probably the Redwood forest in North Ca is the only place I have seen snow. Senior pass for national forests gets half price pads. About $7 to $10 a night. Two week max stays. State campgrounds are all run singly or thru a private national service.
About 30 east of the area though snows get severe in the mtns. The HoH rainforest in Washington St is a good visit. A lake there on the north end that is an eery seagreen and you can see all the way to the bottom. Crescent Lake I believe.
Bandon just north of the Cali gold coast has more expensive private camping but has long beaches with few people on them. Probably because no major pop centers and airports less than 3 hours away. You can still pan for gold in that area.

Biden Administration Offers Bonuses to Doctors Who Implement ‘Anti-Racism Plans’
Effective Jan. 1, Medicare doctors can boost their reimbursement rates by conducting “a clinic-wide review” of their practice’s “commitment to anti-racism.” The plan should cover “value statements” and “clinical practice guidelines,” according to HHS, and define race as “a political and social construct, not a physiological one”—a dichotomy many doctors say will discourage genetic testing and worsen racial health disparities.
The “rationale” for the bonus, the new rules read, is that “it is important to acknowledge systemic racism as a root cause for differences in health outcomes between socially-defined racial groups.”

The Trump administration deliberately undermined the nation’s coronavirus response for political purposes, including by weakening testing guidance and championing widespread “herd immunity,” according to a new report from the House panel investigating the pandemic response.
The Democratic staff report released Friday was a summation of the year’s work investigating political interference in the pandemic response from Trump officials and the former president himself.

40 years at sea, and I have never had enough people to run a boat or a ship. Manpower is ALWAYS the limiting factor and the single largest expense to a shipowner. It’s so bad that it’s a recognized problem internationally. Worse, we as mariners already suffer from task saturation, which is a fancy way of saying we’re already busy and already not getting enough sleep as it is. So, without people, who, exactly, will take the time and training to fly and manage the kite? The captain? Chief engineer? One of the mates? The deckhands, perhaps. Only, The captain already has a 16+ hour a day job. The engineer, too. The mates are in charge of safety, cargo and navigation. Should they spend less time on those things? They would have to. The crew does maintenance. Funny thing, maintenance is a losing battle. From the day the ship launches, maintenance is always falling behind, so a shipyard period is periodically required to catch up. Only, shipyard periods are so expensive that 1-2 too many will make the ship unprofitable, which means bankruptcy.
Maritime crew already have jobs that are so strained that they must take professional classes in their off time in resource management to utilize their time, training and equipment at maximum efficiency.
Also, Beluga Shipping Company did this a few years ago. It wasn’t efficient enough to justify the loss of efficiency among crew, and couldn’t pay for itself in lost time and effort in flying the fool thing. It’s an attention getter, like the x-ray machine in a shoe store in the 50’s.

Long Beach Breaks Through the Supply Chain Bottleneck
The quantities of cargo containers waiting to be delivered at the Port of Long Beach have experienced close to a 40 percent drop compared to a peak in late October. The ease of the supply chain bottleneck is attributed to a combination of efforts made by private citizens and the city government.
“Cargo aging at the port is now down 37 percent, which is a major improvement,” stated Richard F. de la Torre, community information officer of Long Beach City Development Services in a Dec. 8 email.
“Changes in port operational hours, additional storage location at the port, cooperation from shippers, truck drivers and other labor partners have all contributed to the relief seen thus far,” Torre also stated.
